Currarong is a favourite retreat for families, couples and retirees seeking some peace and quiet along the South Coast. The traditional fishing village has yet to catch up with the tourist hype surrounding most of the South Coast’s holiday destinations. The small town boasts endless white sandy beaches, walking trails with uninterrupted ocean views and plenty of fishing spots. Travellers looking to add some more action to the mix can go diving, hop on a whale watching cruise or rock climb at Point Perp. A handful of holiday homes await visitors, including beachfront cottages and modern apartments on the hillside.

Currarong Beaches

Currarong boasts 14 beaches, all of which are covered in white sand. Many of Currarong’s beaches remain quiet year-round, even in the busier summer months. You won’t have to go far to find a deserted spot. Watch the sun set over the north-western beaches, swim in the calm waters of Abrahams Bosom Beach or bring the kids to Currarong’s oceanfront rock pool. Here, youngsters can splash around at low tide or play in high tide’s incoming waves. Jervis Bay’s protected beaches are just a short drive from town. One of these scenic beaches is Honeymoon Bay, which is naturally shaped like a horseshoe.

Currarong Fishing and Water Sports

Opportunities to partake in water sports abound along Currarong’s shores. Close to shore, fishing enthusiasts will be able to reel in marlin and yellow fish tuna. This is one of only a few spots in Australia where these species can be caught so close to the coast. Fish off the rocks or beach, or hire a charter for day of deep sea fishing. You can launch your vessel from the town’s new boat ramp.

Currarong’s clear waters entice divers and snorkelers, so bring your gear or rent some in town. If you’d prefer to stay out of the water, explore the offshore environment by sea kayak. As you navigate, you might be able to spot local species in their natural habitat, such as little blue penguins and dolphins.

Walking and Rock Climbing in Currarong

Get to know Currarong and the surrounding area on foot. Many trails start off in town and lead along the coast or further inland. Abrahams Bosom Walking Track is a 9km trail which circles Beecroft Headland.

As you walk, you will be privy to views of the ocean and the area’s iconic sandstone cliffs. There are plenty of spots to stop along the path for a picnic. You might also see some local fishermen casting a line off the cliffs or snorkelers swimming in the water below.

For a shorter walk, venture along the path leading to the site of Currarong’s famous shipwreck. This will take you only 15 minutes from the town centre.

To get your adrenaline pumping, try out the rock climbing at Point Perpendicular. Climb 80m sandstone cliffs, which, true to their name, are vertical. Atop Point Perp, as locals call it, is a historic lighthouse, built in 1899. From the top of the cliffs, there are panoramic views of the ocean and coastline.

Land and sea around Currarong are teeming with wildlife. During migration season, you will be able to spot whales and their calves make their way to their summer or winter homes.
