Is Daylesford-Malmsbury Road in central Victoria the worst road in Australia?

THE title of worst road in Australia is up for grabs.

The latest contender is Daylesford-Malmsbury Rd in central Victoria, where drivers are being warned by an electronic sign about “major potholes, next 30km, proceed with care”.

“The road’s just absolutely terrible,” said Daylesford newsagent Les Faulkhead, who travels along the road each day.

“The whole road, all the way, is just really broken up,” he said.

Mr Faulkhead, who has lived at Wheatsheaf for about 18 years, said he had never seen the Daylesford-Malmsbury Rd this bad.

Glenlyon General Store owner Geoff O’Hara said “it has never been this bad, it’s the worst it’s ever been”.

He said there had been a pothole in front of his store for “a least six months”.

A VicRoads spokesman said Daylesford-Malmsbury Rd was “currently one of our top priorities for repairs”.

He said work to fix the roads had already been scheduled but recent flood damage had increased the priority.

“VicRoads crews are currently undertaking strengthening and sealing works along the road and are also filling potholes regularly,” the spokesman said.

“These repairs will be continuing over the coming weeks so we can return the road to a reasonable condition.”
