As a lot of you already know, whale sharks are the biggest fish in the sea and I always thought they were gentle giants- until I saw this!
The video was sent in by Amanda Yee and Karen Fraley and Spokas Spokencijus. It shows what looks like a huge and angry whale shark going after a diver.
But is this video real? Or is this just another big fat whale of a fake? Why don’t we get on our goggles and see what we can find out!
I looked around on the internet, and it looks like it was first uploaded by 72Herminator. It had almost a million views at the time of this video, but the comments didn’t offer very much insight. There wasn’t any information in the description. It didn’t even tell us whether the diver was injured or not.
It was right about then, that I decided to get in touch with my team of researchers -The Chewy Piranhas.
Kyle Darkova quickly pointed out that Whale Sharks are not meat eaters so it must be fake, but Prom proposed the Whale Shark was acting out of anger after being threatened by the Diver.
Prom’s point makes sense to me. Elephants aren’t meat eaters but there are plenty of videos showing what happens when they get angry! Maybe it really was an attack?
The only man I know who could really nail this down is
Marine Biologist and Whale Shark Scientist, Simon Pierce. Simon’s studied Whale Sharks for decades, and thanks to him, I was able to come up with this. The official answer...

The video claiming to show a whale shark attacking a diver has been thoroughly examined. Based on all the evidence presented, we agree with whale shark scientist Simon J Pierce. While there is no alteration of the video itself, the claim that the whale shark is attacking the diver, is nothing more than a big fat fake.
SIMON PIERCE: Real video but the interpretation is wrong.
Well at least we know the guy didn’t get hurt - which then leads me to my next question? What’s really going on here?
SIMON: So the video gave me a pretty good laugh… It intrigued me why the whale shark was behaving so strangely…
BILL: Simon noticed a word in the description which helped him figure out this took place.
SIMON: This is in a place called Cenderawasih Bay and that’s actually the place where Whale sharks are used to getting fed fish by people.
BILL: Now the reason they are used to being fed fish turns out to be really interesting… listen to this:
SIMON: There in Nabiri, a lot of fishermen catch small fish in nets and the whale sharks would try to suck the fish out of the nets, so to stop the whale sharks from destroying the gear they started feeding them fish.
BILL: Ok, now the trick turned out to be successful and everyone was happy… but what happened was the tourists found out about this and then they started feeding whale sharks as well.
SIMON: So what’s happening here ( in the video) is the sharks are used to being fed by people and the diver is in the water and the shark wants to get some food…
BILL: So the shark is like where’s my free fish handout? And the diver is like, “I don’t have any fish… nobody told me to bring any… get away from me!"
SIMON: Whale sharks are not dangerous to people, they are not adapted to eating fish larger than a few centimeters. They don't have teeth.

Thailand's Richelieu Rock is a "hot spot" for whale shark sightings and on 4th March 2005 I was lucky enough to capture the World's largest fish in all its glory.
This female whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is missing the top of her tail and would be easy to identify again.

"At Thailand's Richelieu Rock, a whale shark makes a rare appearance.
This is no whale but rather the world's largest fish.
Whale sharks can grow up to 12m long, although unconfirmed reports circulate of giants of up to 18m long. This female is about the average size of 8m.
There is little to match the awe inspired by an encounter with a whale shark, and for many divers this is the pinnacle of their underwater experience.
Their 3000 tiny teeth are rarely used. When feeding they hold their mouths open and feed on plankton, fish eggs and small marine creatures.
Ridges down the whale shark's back are reminiscent of those on leopard sharks' backs and like the leopard shark, the whale shark is harmless to humans.
She has lost the top part of her tail, perhaps due to an attack by a predatory shark when she was a youngster, or possibly a collision with a boat's propeller.
The shark's fins act like the ailerons on an aircraft's rudder and wings, helping steer it gracefully through the water.
The abstract pattern of spots and stripes gives the whale shark some camouflage from above.
Despite being 4 inches thick, the whale shark's skin can become infected if it's mucous covering is broken, so although it might be tempting to touch or even try and hitch a ride on a whale shark, this practice is highly discouraged.
For a long time whale sharks were thought to be oviparous, in other words, hatching from eggs laid by the mother. However since 1995, females have been discovered containing hundreds of hatched pups, proving that the young complete their development inside the mother's body before birth.
Whale sharks do not reach sexual maturity until they are 25 years old, and pregnancies are few and far between, so they are vulnerable to fishing pressures. Shark fin soup is seen as a delicacy and status symbol in many Asian markets. A single whale shark fin can fetch tens of thousands of dollars in some Chinese restaurants. Until this culture changes or legislation intervenes, whale shark numbers are likely to continue falling."

On a recent expedition to Indonesia's Cendrawasih Bay, Conservation International's Mark Erdmann learned how whale sharks often congregate around bagan (lift net) fishing platforms to eat the small silverside baitfish that the fishers are targeting. The sharks have also learned how to "suck" the fish out of holes in the nets!
This can be dangerous — but the local fishers like the sharks, considering them good luck, and are working to modify the net designs to prevent sharks from entering.

Whale shark
The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is a slow-moving filter feeding shark and the largest known extant fish species. The largest confirmed individual had a length of 12.65 m (41.5 ft) and a weight of about 21.5 t (47,000 lb), and unconfirmed reports of considerably larger whale sharks exist. Claims of individuals over 14 m (46 ft) long and weighing at least 30 t (66,000 lb) are not uncommon. The whale shark holds many records for sheer size in the animal kingdom, most notably being by far the largest living nonmammalian vertebrate. It is the sole member of the genus Rhincodon and the family, Rhincodontidae (called Rhiniodon and Rhinodontidae before 1984), which belongs to the subclass Elasmobranchii in the class Chondrichthyes. The species originated about 60 million years ago.
The whale shark is found in open waters of the tropical oceans and is rarely found in water below 22 °C (72 °F). Modeling suggests a lifespan of about 70 years but measurements have proven difficult. Whale sharks have very large mouths and are filter feeders, which is a feeding mode that occurs in only two other sharks, the megamouth shark and the basking shark. They feed almost exclusively on plankton and therefore, are completely harmless to humans.

Whale shark sucks fish out of hole in fishing net - Conservation International (CI)
http://www.conservation.org On a recent expedition to Indonesia's Cendrawasih Bay, Conservation International's Mark Erdmann learned how whale sharks often congregate around bagan (lift net) fishing platforms to eat the small silverside baitfish that the fishers are targeting. The sharks have also learned how to "suck" the fish out of holes in the nets! As a lot of you already know, whale sharks are the biggest fish in the sea and I always thought they were gentle giants- until I saw this!

But is this video real? Or is this just another big fat whale of a fake? Why don’t we get on our goggles and see what we can find out!
I looked around on the internet, and it looks like it was first uploaded by 72Herminator. It had almost a million views at the time of this video, but the comments didn’t offer very much insight. There wasn’t any information in the description. It didn’t even tell us whether the diver was injured or not.
It was right about then, that I decided to get in touch with my team of researchers -The Chewy Piranhas.
Kyle Darkova quickly pointed out that Whale Sharks are not meat eaters so it must be fake, but Prom proposed the Whale Shark was acting out of anger after being threatened by the Diver.
Prom’s point makes sense to me. Elephants aren’t meat eaters but there are plenty of videos showing what happens when they get angry! Maybe it really was an attack?
The only man I know who could really nail this down is
Marine Biologist and Whale Shark Scientist, Simon Pierce. Simon’s studied Whale Sharks for decades, and thanks to him, I was able to come up with this. The official answer...

The video claiming to show a whale shark attacking a diver has been thoroughly examined. Based on all the evidence presented, we agree with whale shark scientist Simon J Pierce. While there is no alteration of the video itself, the claim that the whale shark is attacking the diver, is nothing more than a big fat fake.

Well at least we know the guy didn’t get hurt - which then leads me to my next question? What’s really going on here?
SIMON: So the video gave me a pretty good laugh… It intrigued me why the whale shark was behaving so strangely…
BILL: Simon noticed a word in the description which helped him figure out this took place.
SIMON: This is in a place called Cenderawasih Bay and that’s actually the place where Whale sharks are used to getting fed fish by people.
BILL: Now the reason they are used to being fed fish turns out to be really interesting… listen to this:
SIMON: There in Nabiri, a lot of fishermen catch small fish in nets and the whale sharks would try to suck the fish out of the nets, so to stop the whale sharks from destroying the gear they started feeding them fish.
BILL: Ok, now the trick turned out to be successful and everyone was happy… but what happened was the tourists found out about this and then they started feeding whale sharks as well.
SIMON: So what’s happening here ( in the video) is the sharks are used to being fed by people and the diver is in the water and the shark wants to get some food…
BILL: So the shark is like where’s my free fish handout? And the diver is like, “I don’t have any fish… nobody told me to bring any… get away from me!"
SIMON: Whale sharks are not dangerous to people, they are not adapted to eating fish larger than a few centimeters. They don't have teeth.

"At Thailand's Richelieu Rock, a whale shark makes a rare appearance.
This is no whale but rather the world's largest fish.
Whale sharks can grow up to 12m long, although unconfirmed reports circulate of giants of up to 18m long. This female is about the average size of 8m.
There is little to match the awe inspired by an encounter with a whale shark, and for many divers this is the pinnacle of their underwater experience.
Their 3000 tiny teeth are rarely used. When feeding they hold their mouths open and feed on plankton, fish eggs and small marine creatures.
Ridges down the whale shark's back are reminiscent of those on leopard sharks' backs and like the leopard shark, the whale shark is harmless to humans.
She has lost the top part of her tail, perhaps due to an attack by a predatory shark when she was a youngster, or possibly a collision with a boat's propeller.
The shark's fins act like the ailerons on an aircraft's rudder and wings, helping steer it gracefully through the water.
The abstract pattern of spots and stripes gives the whale shark some camouflage from above.
Despite being 4 inches thick, the whale shark's skin can become infected if it's mucous covering is broken, so although it might be tempting to touch or even try and hitch a ride on a whale shark, this practice is highly discouraged.
For a long time whale sharks were thought to be oviparous, in other words, hatching from eggs laid by the mother. However since 1995, females have been discovered containing hundreds of hatched pups, proving that the young complete their development inside the mother's body before birth.
Whale sharks do not reach sexual maturity until they are 25 years old, and pregnancies are few and far between, so they are vulnerable to fishing pressures. Shark fin soup is seen as a delicacy and status symbol in many Asian markets. A single whale shark fin can fetch tens of thousands of dollars in some Chinese restaurants. Until this culture changes or legislation intervenes, whale shark numbers are likely to continue falling."

On a recent expedition to Indonesia's Cendrawasih Bay, Conservation International's Mark Erdmann learned how whale sharks often congregate around bagan (lift net) fishing platforms to eat the small silverside baitfish that the fishers are targeting. The sharks have also learned how to "suck" the fish out of holes in the nets!
This can be dangerous — but the local fishers like the sharks, considering them good luck, and are working to modify the net designs to prevent sharks from entering.

The Georgia Aquarium was the Worlds Largest aquarium in the entire world from its opening in 2005 until 2012, when it was surpassed by Marine Life Park in Singapore. So it's now the Americas Largest Aquarium.
