In this moment of heightened virtual connection, AbTeC invites you to visit their island in the vast multi-player online world of Second Life to explore their inaugural gallery exhibition, “Reformatted.”
“Reformatted” features artwork by Sonny Assu, Rebecca Belmore, Richard Bell, Scott Benesiinaabandan, Hannah Claus, David Garneau, Maria Hupfield, Jason Edward Lewis, Peter Morin, Nadia Myre, and Skawennati. The exhibited works, never intended for a virtual world, are newly presented as reformatted, digital versions of their original selves.

Artist & Co-Director of Aboriginal Territories in Cyberspace
A History and Theory of New Media Lecture as part of the Indigenous Technologies initiative, co-sponsored by the Department of Art Practice.
Skawennati will present the artwork and ideas of the Indigenously-determined research/creation networks she has helped to found, lead and coordinate.
Skawennati makes art that addresses history, the future, and change from her perspective as an urban Kanien’kehá:ka woman and as a cyberpunk avatar. She creates machinimas (movies made in virtual environments) as well as still images, textiles and sculpture. Her work has been widely presented in both group exhibitions and solo shows and is included in public and private collections, such as the National Gallery of Canada and the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal.

A History and Theory of New Media Lecture as part of the Indigenous Technologies initiative, co-sponsored by the Department of Art Practice.
Skawennati will present the artwork and ideas of the Indigenously-determined research/creation networks she has helped to found, lead and coordinate.
Skawennati makes art that addresses history, the future, and change from her perspective as an urban Kanien’kehá:ka woman and as a cyberpunk avatar. She creates machinimas (movies made in virtual environments) as well as still images, textiles and sculpture. Her work has been widely presented in both group exhibitions and solo shows and is included in public and private collections, such as the National Gallery of Canada and the Musée d'art contemporain de Montréal.

Behind the barricades at the Treatment Centre he learns about the Warrior Society, the Tree of Peace and other teachings. Among the people staying there is a 6-year-old girl named Karahkwenhawi. Hunter protects her and her mother during the evacuation of the TC.
This episode commemorates the 20th anniversary of this terribly significant event in First Nations, Quebecois and Canadian history. In it, Hunter learns important aspects of Mohawk culture, and his connection to it, while also understanding the connections between Native people from across Turtle Island.

“Reformatted” features artwork by Sonny Assu, Rebecca Belmore, Richard Bell, Scott Benesiinaabandan, Hannah Claus, David Garneau, Maria Hupfield, Jason Edward Lewis, Peter Morin, Nadia Myre, and Skawennati. The exhibited works, never intended for a virtual world, are newly presented as reformatted, digital versions of their original selves.
