DUNSBOROUGH Division 1 pennants side hosted Cowaramup at the Dunsborough & Districts Country Club last Saturday on a near perfect day for bowling. While the score cards showed relatively easy wins for each of the teams in the Dunsborough side, the three teams for Cowaramup lifted in the latter half of each of the games. It was a “never give up” situation for the Cowaramup skips who kept urging their players on and despite it being a small ineffective mini revival from each team, it did ensure the Dunsborough teams maintained their concentration if they wanted to take out the points. In the end it was Dunsborough which received the maximum six points and allowed them to preserve their leadership on the Leeuwin League ladder with Margaret River hard on their heels for second place. This now means an important match coming up next week as these top two sides meet on the home greens of Margaret River. In second division Dunsborough Blue defeated Cowaramup on their own greens to obtain four points while the White team managed a win and a loss against Nannup but received three points because of the aggregate. The two Dunsborough teams hold first and second place on this division’s ladder.

Busselton Golf Club

THE Busselton Golf Club hosted a huge weekend of golf with the annual Leaney Cup Mixed Medley event where male and female golfers from across the state converged to play two days of different formats in boy/girl teams. The sun shone and the golf course starred after developing into one of WA’s best regional layouts over the years. In the end after all the scores were collated, it was the pairing of local, Sue Barrett and Lakelands CC member, Bryan Drake who won the event by two points over Ken Herbert and Pauleen Bignell. Friday kicked things off however with the playing of the Leukaemia Foundation’s inaugural charity fundraiser Ambrose Two’s event. A fun day was had with more than $6000 raised in support of local leukaemia sufferers.

Dunsborough Bay Yacht Club

THE annual opening of the season for the Dunsborough Bay Yacht Club was held recently and the weather really co-operated with sunshine, wind and many members and friends enjoying the day. Visitors representing Yachting WA and other yacht clubs in the South West were welcomed as the club vice patron Libby Mettam MHR graciously declared the season open, presented pennants to the new flag officers, and declared the new addition to the clubhouse open. This new structure blends in beautifully with the existing building and houses the support boats and towing vehicle, as well as other sailing paraphernalia. The club raised funds and did a lot of the hard and skilled work to supplement a City of Busselton community grant and a grant from the Sports and Recreation Council of WA. We are extremely grateful to these two sponsors, and also to Charles Grist of Cape Constructions who directed  and assisted with the whole operation. After champagne and a delicious lunch prepared by Chris Ryall and lady members of the club, the annual sail past was saluted by vice patron Libby Mettam MHR and the club commodore Graeme Missen. Then the annual race for the Patron and Junior Cups (donated by Barry House MLA) was held in great conditions. Not too windy for the lone minnow sailor, but enough for the lasers and the 29-er. The 23 boats raced on an Olympic course, with yardstick applied, and the mixed fleet included lasers; splashes, flying ants, a 29-er, mirrors, tasars, a minnow and a keelboat. Several tussles developed in the fleet as spinnakers were raised and water was called around the buoys, and the senior, youth and junior sailors are all to be congratulated on their abilities. As well as club boats, there were some from Geographe Bay Yacht Club and one from Augusta Yacht Club. Results – Seniors: 1. Laser: Dean Cowan – Hang On; 2. Laser: David Lodge – Syd; 3. Mirror: Richard/Tessa Rowell – Barnacle Blues. Juniors: 1. Mirror: Rosie/Matilda Rowell – Lollyhead; 2. Flying Ant: Harry Ainsworth/Brodie Martin – The Edge; 3. Splash: Matt Myburg – Splash 3.
