Crest Castle, Research sold after more than four years on the market

IN AN unusual but perfect match, a NSW Anglican minister “with a thing for castles” has bought the iconic Crest Castle in Research for $1.68 million.

The sale occurred 1447 days after it was listed in September 2012.

Built in the 1980s, the unique home at 24 Crest Rd, Research in Melbourne’s north east is on 4392sq m and comes with turrets, battlements, an ornamental lake, a hydrotherapy spa pool that doubles as a moat, a treetop balcony and landscaped gardens.

Within the 11-bedroom castle are vast soaring ceilings, spiral staircases leading to the turrets, and a commercial kitchen.

Hocking Stuart Greensborough director Daniel Sheean sold the property to its current vendors 15 years ago and said it was definitely not “the norm”.

“It’s huge, it’s just huge — and it’s pretty cool,” he said.

“It’s pretty close to the genuine article and you do get a feeling of being in a medieval castle when you’re there.

“We had all sorts of people looking at it … to run different businesses or conferences or just live there as a big family.

“We had multiple offers on it too but nothing quite at the level the vendors wanted.”

Mr Sheean said while such a big property needed plenty of maintenance, the vendors had renovated it extensively.

“They’ve spent a bit of money on it and they’ve also done a fantastic job with the grounds, which were fairly barren,” he said.

Sales agent Mike Mulder agreed Crest Castle was a unique property.

“It’s far from conventional,” he said.

“But the buyer has got a thing for castles and he and his wife plan to move in soon and just enjoy it.”

Mr Mulder said the vendors were now looking to move to Queensland.
