Hagia Sophia (or Ayasofya in Turkish) is a grand example of surviving Byzantine architecture. Located in the Old City in Istanbul, Turkey, the current Hagia Sophia dates back to 537 and it has served as an Eastern Orthodox Cathedral, a Roman Catholic Cathedral and an Imperial Mosque before being converted into a museum in 1935.
The interior is magnificient and breathtaking. Very astounding to see both Christian and Islamic elements in the same place. It is also amazing to see how well-preserved the architecture and mosaics are, after so many centuries.
Be sure to go there early to avoid the crowds!

The Church of the Holy Wisdom, known as Hagia Sophia (Άγια Σοφία) in Greek, Sancta Sophia in Latin, and Ayasofya or Aya Sofya in Turkish, is a former Byzantine church and former Ottoman mosque in Istanbul. Now a museum, Hagia Sophia is universally acknowledged as one of the great buildings of the world.
Unfortunately nothing remains of the original Hagia Sophia, which was built on this site in the fourth century by Constantine the Great. Constantine was the first Christian emperor and the founder of the city of Constantinople, which he called "the New Rome." The Hagia Sophia was one of several great churches he built in important cities throughout his empire.
Following the destruction of Constantine's church, a second was built by his son Constantius and the emperor Theodosius the Great. This second church was burned down during the Nika riots of 532, though fragments of it have been excavated and can be seen today.
Hagia Sophia was rebuilt in her present form between 532 and 537 under the personal supervision of Emperor Justinian I.
It is one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture, rich with mosaics and marble pillars and coverings. After completion, Justinian is said to have exclaimed, Νενίκηκά σε Σολομών ("Solomon, I have outdone thee!").

Die 537 eingeweihte Basilika Hagia Sophia in Istanbul ist ein architektonisches Meisterwerk mit wechselvoller Geschichte. Eintausend Jahre lang war sie die größte Kirche der Welt und das religiöse und symbolische Zentrum des ersten großen christlichen Reiches: Byzanz. Bis zur Eroberung Konstantinopels war die Hagia Sophia das größte Gotteshaus der Christenheit. Nach der Eroberung Konstantinopels 1453 wandelten sie die Osmanen in eine Moschee um und fügten als äußeres Kennzeichen vier Minarette hinzu. Mit der Umwandlung der Moschee in ein Museum krönte Mustafa Kemal Atatürk 1934 schließlich seine laizistische Revolution. Als bei den damaligen Renovierungsarbeiten unter osmanischen Verzierungen sehr wertvolle Mosaike aus der byzantinischen Zeit freigelegt wurden, keimte das Interesse für die byzantinische Kunstgeschichte wieder auf.
Es kommt einem Wunder gleich, dass die gigantische, etwas mehr als 50 Meter hohe Kuppel der Hagia Sophia bis heute auf ihren Pfeilern thront und ihre Kunstschätze die Jahrhunderte überdauerten, denn Istanbul wurde auf einer sehr aktiven seismischen Verwerfung errichtet. Experten rechnen in den nächsten 20 Jahren mit einem großen Beben. Daher erforscht ein internationales Team bestehend aus Architekten, Seismologen und Ingenieuren die Erdbebensicherheit des Gebäudes. Sie hoffen, dabei auch versteckte Schwachstellen zu finden, um den Bau entsprechend zu stabilisieren und ihn für zukünftige Generationen zu erhalten.
Die Hagia Sophia zeugt von einer faszinierenden Geschichte. Und möglicherweise hat der byzantinische Monumentalbau noch längst nicht alle Kunstschätze freigegeben, die noch in ihm ruhen. Hagia Sophia (from the Greek: Ἁγία Σοφία, "Holy Wisdom"; Latin: Sancta Sophia or Sancta Sapientia; Turkish: Ayasofya) is a former Christian patriarchal basilica (church), later an imperial mosque, and now a museum (Ayasofya Müzesi) in Istanbul, Turkey. From the date of its construction in 537 until 1453, it served as an Orthodox cathedral and seat of the Patriarch of Constantinople, except between 1204 and 1261, when it was converted to a Roman Catholic cathedral under the Latin Empire. The building was a mosque from 29 May 1453 until 1931. It was then secularized and opened as a museum on 1 February 1935.
Famous in particular for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture and is said to have "changed the history of architecture". It remained the world's largest cathedral for nearly a thousand years, until Seville Cathedral was completed in 1520. The current building was originally constructed as a church between 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I and was the third Church of the Holy Wisdom to occupy the site, the previous two having both been destroyed by rioters. It was designed by the Greek geometers Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles.

Located in the Old City in Istanbul, Turkey, the current Hagia Sophia dates back to 537 and it has served as an Eastern Orthodox Cathedral, a Roman Catholic Cathedral and an Imperial Mosque before being converted into a museum in 1935.
The interior is magnificient and breathtaking. Very astounding to see both Christian and Islamic elements in the same place. It is also amazing to see how well-preserved the architecture and mosaics are, after so many centuries.

Now a museum, Hagia Sophia is universally acknowledged as one of the great buildings of the world.
Unfortunately nothing remains of the original Hagia Sophia, which was built on this site in the fourth century by Constantine the Great. Constantine was the first Christian emperor and the founder of the city of Constantinople, which he called "the New Rome." The Hagia Sophia was one of several great churches he built in important cities throughout his empire.
Following the destruction of Constantine's church, a second was built by his son Constantius and the emperor Theodosius the Great. This second church was burned down during the Nika riots of 532, though fragments of it have been excavated and can be seen today.
Hagia Sophia was rebuilt in her present form between 532 and 537 under the personal supervision of Emperor Justinian I.
It is one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture, rich with mosaics and marble pillars and coverings. After completion, Justinian is said to have exclaimed, Νενίκηκά σε Σολομών ("Solomon, I have outdone thee!").

Die 537 eingeweihte Basilika Hagia Sophia in Istanbul ist ein architektonisches Meisterwerk mit wechselvoller Geschichte. Eintausend Jahre lang war sie die größte Kirche der Welt und das religiöse und symbolische Zentrum des ersten großen christlichen Reiches: Byzanz. Bis zur Eroberung Konstantinopels war die Hagia Sophia das größte Gotteshaus der Christenheit. Nach der Eroberung Konstantinopels 1453 wandelten sie die Osmanen in eine Moschee um und fügten als äußeres Kennzeichen vier Minarette hinzu. Mit der Umwandlung der Moschee in ein Museum krönte Mustafa Kemal Atatürk 1934 schließlich seine laizistische Revolution. Als bei den damaligen Renovierungsarbeiten unter osmanischen Verzierungen sehr wertvolle Mosaike aus der byzantinischen Zeit freigelegt wurden, keimte das Interesse für die byzantinische Kunstgeschichte wieder auf.
Es kommt einem Wunder gleich, dass die gigantische, etwas mehr als 50 Meter hohe Kuppel der Hagia Sophia bis heute auf ihren Pfeilern thront und ihre Kunstschätze die Jahrhunderte überdauerten, denn Istanbul wurde auf einer sehr aktiven seismischen Verwerfung errichtet. Experten rechnen in den nächsten 20 Jahren mit einem großen Beben. Daher erforscht ein internationales Team bestehend aus Architekten, Seismologen und Ingenieuren die Erdbebensicherheit des Gebäudes. Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya Müzesi) in Istanbul, Turkey. From the date of its construction in 537 AD, and until 1453, it served as an Orthodox cathedral and seat of the Patriarch of Constantinople, except between 1204 and 1261, when it was converted by the Fourth Crusaders to a Roman Catholic cathedral under the Latin Empire of Constantinople. The building was a mosque from 29 May 1453 until 1931. It was then secularized and opened as a museum on 1 February 1935.
Famous in particular for its massive dome, it is considered the epitome of Byzantine architecture and is said to have "changed the history of architecture" It remained the world's largest cathedral for nearly a thousand years, until Seville Cathedral was completed in 1520.
The current building was originally constructed as a church between 532 and 537 on the orders of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I and was the third Church of the Holy Wisdom to occupy the site, the previous two having both been destroyed by rioters. It was designed by the Greek geometers Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles.
The church was dedicated to the Wisdom of God, the Logos, the second person of the Holy Trinity,[6] its patronal feast taking place on 25 December, the commemoration of the birth of the incarnation of the Logos in Christ. Although sometimes referred to as Sancta Sophia (as though it were named after Saint Sophia), sophia being the phonetic spelling in Latin of the Greek word for wisdom, its full name in Greek is Ναὸς τῆς Ἁγίας τοῦ Θεοῦ Σοφίας, Naos tēs Hagias tou Theou Sophias, "Shrine of the Holy Wisdom of God".
The church contained a large collection of holy relics and featured, among other things, a 15-metre (49 ft) silver iconostasis. The focal point of the Eastern Orthodox Church for nearly one thousand years, the building witnessed the excommunication of Patriarch Michael I Cerularius on the part of Humbert of Silva Candida, the papal envoy of Pope Leo IX in 1054, an act which is commonly considered the start of the Great Schism.
In 1453, Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Turks under Sultan Mehmed II, who ordered this main church of Orthodox Christianity converted into a mosque. By that point, the church had fallen into a state of disrepair. Nevertheless, the Christian cathedral made a strong impression on the new Ottoman rulers and they decided to convert it into a mosque. The bells, altar, iconostasis, and sacrificial vessels and other relics were removed and the mosaics depicting Jesus, his Mother Mary, Christian saints and angels were also removed or plastered over. Islamic features—such as the mihrab, minbar, and four minarets—were added. It remained a mosque until 1931, when it was closed to the public for four years. It was re-opened in 1935 as a museum by the Republic of Turkey. Hagia Sophia was, as of 2014, the second-most visited museum in Turkey, attracting almost 3.3 million visitors annually. According to data released by the Turkish Culture and Tourism Ministry, Hagia Sophia was Turkey’s most visited tourist attraction in 2015.
From its initial conversion until the construction of the nearby Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Blue Mosque of Istanbul) in 1616, it was the principal mosque of Istanbul. The Byzantine architecture of the Hagia Sophia served as inspiration for many other Ottoman mosques, such as the Blue Mosque, the Şehzade Mosque, the Süleymaniye Mosque, the Rüstem Pasha Mosque and the Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque.
