How do you achieve a cinematic film look for your film? It's actually not as hard as you might think.
You’ve come to the right place.
In today’s video, we explain what Sidney Lumet calls, The Lens Plot.
We define this advanced cinematic technique, and provide specific examples from popular films so that you can generate the perfect lens plot for your own project.
Add this skill to your cinematic arsenal for 2019.
A lens plot is sort of like a stylesheet for your lens and lighting. It is used by establishing a visual motif specifically through your camera lenses. It takes more than LUTs and color grading to get the film look.
A big part of that is your lens plot.
“It’s a way to make sure that your shots serve your story as a whole.”
There are 3 different types of lens plots:
1. Static lens plot refers to constant, enchanted visuals throughout a particular project or film.
2. Narrative lens plot refers to visuals that gradually change over the course of a story.
3. Elemental lens plot refers to a visuals that change with each character or story in a film.
To get this cinematic film look, you’ll want to first analyze your story. Is it a fluffy comedy, or a dark journey into the mind of a psychopath?
What lens would work well in each situation?
Once you’ve determined what your story is about, and the effects of different lenses, then you can build a lens plot that visually conveys the tone, world, and feel of your story.
A good director won’t force a specific cinematic look unless it enhances their story. A good producer will keep this in mind as well. If you’re a cinematographer, this might be a big part of your job - and it isn’t a bad thing to suggest to the director during the planning stages.
You will have a hard time establishing yourself as an auteur without this advanced film technique, and you will have a harder time getting that cinematic look you desire.
We break it down step-by-step just for you.
So enjoy our video and get your cinematic film took today!

Howard Beale (Peter Finch), an acclaimed anchor at the UBS Evening News, is put out to pasture because he too old. News division president Max Schumacher (William Holden), Howard's best friend, is forced to deliver the decision. Beale can't stomach the idea of losing his 25-year post as anchorman simply because of age, so in his next broadcast he announces to the viewers that he's going to commit suicide on his final program. The network wants Beale immediately fired, but Schumacher gives him a chance to apologize on the air. What he doesn't count on is Beale using this camera time to go off on another tirade that to everyone's surprise resonates with the audience. Seeing an opportunity to harness Beale's "mad as hell" energy, the head of programming, Diana Christensen (Faye Dunaway), suggests Beale be given his own show. Although Max and Diana disagree on this business proposal, they initiate a personal relationship that complicates matters further. Driven by her tireless efforts to succeed, Diana drives Max away as Beale's show becomes more crazed. And as those working in media know, fans are fickle and when Beale's ratings drop, Diana and the network execs cancel his show permanently.
Collection: Written by Paddy Chayefsky
Cast: Peter Finch, Faye Dunaway, William Holden

NETWORK now streaming on FilmStruck http://flms.tk/yt

Full interview description:
Sidney Lumet was interviewed for three-hours in New York, NY. Mr. Lumet spoke of his work as an actor on the stage before he became a director in television. He recalled his work on the television series Danger(1950-55), and You Are There(1953-57) both "live" dramatic shows of the time. He discussed the use of blacklisted writers on these shows and how the material they wrote often reflected the era of McCarthyism. He also discussed other television dramatic anthology series he directed for including Omnibus, Goodyear Playhouse, The Alcoa Hour, Studio One, and Kraft Television Theatre. He described his direction of the well-known television special The Sacco-Vanzetti Story and The Play of the Week: "The Iceman Cometh" both of which aired in 1960. He spoke of his transition to a feature film director with "12 Angry Men" in 1957 and his work on such other feature films as the Paddy Chayefsky's satire, "Network" (1976). The interview was conducted by Dr. Ralph Engleman on October 28, 1999.
