New Year is the time at which a new calendar year begins and the calendar's year count increments by one. Many cultures celebrate the event in some manner. The New Year of the Gregorian calendar, today mostly in use, falls on 1 January (New Year's Day), as was the case both in the old Roman calendar (at least after about 713 BCE) and in the Julian calendar that succeeded it. The order of months was January to December in the Old Roman calendar during the reign of King Numa Pompilius in about 700 BCE, according to Plutarch and Macrobius, and has been in continuous use since that time. Many countries, such as the Czech Republic, Italy, Spain, the UK, and the United States, mark 1 January as a national holiday.
During the Middle Ages in western Europe, while the Julian calendar was still in use, authorities moved New Year's Day variously, depending upon locale, to one of several other days, among them: 1 March, 25 March, Easter, 1 September, and 25 December. These New Year's Day changes generally reverted to using January 1 before or during the various local adoptions of the Gregorian calendar, beginning in 1582. The change from March 25 – Lady Day, one of the four quarter days – to January 1 took place in Scotland in 1600, before the ascension of James VI of Scotland to the throne of England in 1603 and well before the formation of the Kingdom of Great Britain in 1707. In England and Wales (and in all British dominions, including Britain's American colonies), 1751 began on March 25 and lasted 282 days, and 1752 began on January 1. For more information about the changeover from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar and the effect on the dating of historical events etc., see Old Style and New Style dates.
Since everyone liked my 'Shopping For Passover' video so much, i made a Rosh Hashanah one with my kids and some of my friends from The Maccabeats. There's singing, me blowing the shofar, a fake ram's head, and some good laughs. Enjoy! Rosh Hashanah (Hebrew: רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה, literally "head [of] the year") is the Jewish New Year. The biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah (Hebrew: יוֹם תְּרוּעָה), literally "day [of] shouting/blasting", sometimes translated as the Feast of Trumpets.

"The Year of the SWORD of the LORD" October 2, 2016, Sunday
Jews all over the world will be celebrating Rosh Hashanah or the Jewish New Year this week. Here in Israel it's very common to see storefronts like these selling honey and various gifts people can bring to their families. Dipping the apple in the honey is a custom that expresses hope for a sweet and new year. But the tradition also demands something spiritually of Jews, that they do some soul-searching, introspection, look at their deeds and see how they can improve their life. Let's take a listen to what Israelis had to say about the holiday. The Rabbis say blowing the shofar or ram's horn on Rosh Hashanah is supposed to bring us to repentance, but it's also supposed to remind us of the story of the binding of Isaac. Abraham filled with devotion and trust in God follows his instruction...

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, is not a time for lighthearted celebration, but for introspection, prayer, and repentance for past sins before both God and man. On this show Rabbi Eckstein discusses the biblical roots of Rosh Hashanah, and tells how Jews today follow God's commandment to observe this as a day for you to sound the trumpets, (Numbers 29:1), just as they did in biblical times.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OUR JEWISH FRIENDS AND FAMILIES AROUND THE WORLD and for that matter this pertains to all my non Jewish friends too. If Rosh Hashanah could be summed up in one word, that word would be; love, potential, and life. (Okay, so that’s three words, what are you going to do, I’m still learning to count!!)) "Please accept my apology. It will never happen again," said President Rodrigo Duterte to a gathering of Jews, prompting applause and even a standing ovation. "That is why I am here, to say I'm sorry because I respect the Jewish people," he said during his speech on Tuesday, October 4, during the Rosh Hashanah or the Jewish New Year celebration at the Beit Yaacov Synagogue in Makati. "It was just a mental slip of the numbers of 3 [million] and Hitler's [number]. It had nothing to do with the memory of the Jews because in my country we do not tinker with memories of our ancestors. It was just a play of the tongue," he said. I'm running 'round in circles
Trying to find some peace of mind
Cause it's a lonely place when
All the we need we cannot find
Wait, wait cause I don't wanna be lost
Wait, wait cause I don't wanna be lost
And I don't wanna be the one to drag you down
Wait
For a new day, for a new year
I'll be standing on my own
In a new place, with my hands out
Looking for the answers
It's such a sweet solution
To close our eyes and walk in line
And all our contributions
Just seem to fade away with time
Wait, wait cause I don't wanna be lost
Wait, wait cause I don't wanna be lost
And I don't wanna be the one to drag you down
Wait
For a new day, for a new year
I'll be standing on my own
In a new place, with my hands out
Looking for the answers
Wait
For a new day, for a new year
I'll be standing on my own
In a new place, with my hands out
Looking for the answers
I cant stand here, waiting
With my hands out, for the ceiling
But I won't lie, I won't try
I can't walk such a straight line
And these bright lights, surround me
People are so friendly
But I won't lie, I won't try
I can't pretend that it's alright, no
Wait
For a new day, for a new year
I'll be standing on my own
In a new place, with my hands out
Looking for the answers
