SnapMelbourne workshop puts focus on Melbourne thanks to Canon Collective

ASPIRING photographers got some expert tips as they captured the eclectic charm of our city’s iconic laneways.

The lucky snappers won a spot at a workshop led by Canon Collective experts as part of our SnapMelbourne event.

The Canon workshop was one of the events leading up to this year’s #SnapMelbourne day on November 16.

Winners were armed with state-of-the art Canon EOS cameras, unleashed at Hosier Lane and given top tips for shooting colour and movement, light and shade.

The keen photographers soon took matters into their own hands, crouching on the ground or climbing on wheelie bins in order to capture that perfect shot.

Cranbourne’s Chantelle Perry juxtaposed the window of the Movida kitchen with the alleyway beyond.

“I usually like taking photos of animals and beaches, but I saw the open window and thought it would be an interesting shot,” Ms Perry said.

“It’s a very Melbourne scene.”

Margaret Lowe, from Blackburn, said she liked to photograph “a bit of everything”.

One of her #SnapMelbourne contributions was an image of another photographer taking a picture looking up through the leaves of the trees at Ruffey Lake Park in Doncaster.

Heeding the expert advice about taking the best movement shots, Elaine Greeley improvised using a plastic milk crate as a tripod.

Ms Greeley, from Maidstone, said she usually took photos on her mobile phone and couldn’t resist the chance to try out a digital SLR camera.

“My ideal shot to capture Melbourne would be capturing the people and the sense of community,” she said.

#SnapMelbourne culminates in a national day of snapping and sharing on Wednesday, November 16.

For 24 hours, you are invited to post pics of your slice of Melbourne to create a day in the life of our city.
