Whāia Te Māramatanga by Rob Thorne [Long]
Whia Te Māramatanga is a musical passage of identity and connection. A journey of knowledge through action and practice, reclaiming the past for a stronger future, while joining the two in a place that is here, and a time that is now. A re-acquaintance of ancestor with descendant. These ancient practices and their sounds are not just revisited, they are actively reborn, reworked, and reunited with a living approach to the potential of the sound they produce. Acoustic energies that encourage, empower, enliven and entertain. Powerful, magical, intentional. As past and future become one in the present, time dissolves in a transcendental celebration of unity. All are one. Now.

Durie Hill Pūtōrino (1) by Rob Thorne
Rob Thorne plays pūtōrino in the Durie Hill Tunnel, Whanganui, NZ. This clip is just inside the 205m long concrete tunnel and has the longest echo time of all 3 clips. The pūtōrino is a traditional NZ Māori (harmonic) bugle flute made from one piece of wood that is split and carved and then bound back together. It is the musical embodiment of Hine Raukatauri, the Māori goddess of flute music, who at certain times presents in the form of a bagmoth. She is believed to have the most beautiful voice in all of the forest.

A dramatic improvised entrance to the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts marked the beginning of ‘Te Ao Hou | This New World’, a concert presented at the 2019 Adam Chamber Music Festical by taonga puoro exponent Rob Thorne Toi Puoro and the New Zealand String Quartett. The title of this opening work reflects the poem by Vincent Ieni Olsen-Reeder for which the concert is named and the ceremonial qualities of the entrance - ‘Whakariterite’ means to make a way and prepare with prayer, to negotiate a path forward.
The work is a co-composition of Rob Thorne, the New Zealand String Quartet and Dr Vincent Olsen-Reeder.
Over the following days we will bring you the remainder of this concert: works by Salina Fisher, Rob Thorne, Gillian Whitehead, Anthony Ritchie and Gareth Farr. But if you would prefer to watch the concert unfold uninterrupted we suggest you jump over to https://youtu.be/v9gHqers4QE.
