Kunming is a jumping-off point for travel to Lijiang and Dali, so it's a major transporation hub for a lot of travelers who don't really see the value of of Kunming itself.

(EN) Kunming is the capital and largest city of Yunnan Province in Southwest China. A prefecture-level city, it is the political, economic, communications and cultural centre of Yunnan, and is the seat of the provincial government. It is also home to several universities, museums, galleries and other important economic, cultural, and educational institutions. The headquarters of many of Yunnan's large businesses are in Kunming as well. It was important during World War II as a Chinese military center, American air base, and transport terminus for the Burma Road. Located in the middle of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Kunming is located at an altitude of 1,900 m above sea level and at a latitude just north of the Tropic of Cancer. It covers an area of 21,473 km2}} and its urban area covers 2,081 km². Kunming has population of 6,432,2120 including 3,055,000 in the urban area and is located at the northern edge of the large Lake Dian, surrounded by temples and lake-and-limestone hill landscapes.
Kunming consists of an old, previously walled city, a modern commercial district, residential and university areas. The city has an astronomical observatory, and its institutions of higher learning include Yunnan University, Yunnan Normal University and a medical college. On the outskirts is a famed bronze temple, dating from the Ming dynasty. Kunming was formerly called Yunnanfu (云南府; literally meaning "Yunnan Capital") until the 1920s.
Its economic importance derives from its geographical position. Positioned near the border with Southeastern Asian countries, serving as a transportation hub in Southwest China, linking by rail to Vietnam and by road to Burma and Laos. This positioning also makes it an important trade center in this region of the nation. It also houses some manufacturing, chiefly copper, though some other chemicals, machinery, textiles, paper and cement take key. Though having a nearly 2,400 year history, its modern prosperity dates only from 1910, when the railroad from Hanoi was built. The city has continued to develop rapidly under China's modernization efforts. Kunming's streets have widened while office buildings and housing projects develop at a fast pace. Kunming has been designated a special tourism center and as such sports a proliferation of high-rises and luxury hotels. (wikipedia)

After an amazing year in the city of Kunming in South of China, I had to make a short movie about it to share with you all my experience.
It shakes, it's ugly & not professional at all but who cares?
Normally the video should be longer but there are some issues with synchronising the sound and the video and I am lazy to try to find out what's wrong.

The Stone Forest of Shilin is an area of stunning limestone (karst) formations close to Kunming, Yunnan, China. UNESCO has inscribed the Stone Forest on the World Heritage List as part of the South China Karst: "South China Karst is one of the world’s most spectacular examples of humid tropical to subtropical karst landscapes. The Shilin Karst component is in Yunnan province and contains stone forests with sculpted pinnacle columns and is considered the world reference site for pinnacle karst."

Footage of the Kunming terrorist attack was revealed at the Higher People’s Court in China’s Yunnan Province, when it upheld the sentences handed down to 4 suspects who were involved in March’s terrorist attack in Kunming city. The video shows the awing moments of how a group of assailants armed with knives attacked civilians at a railway station in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province. The attack left 31 dead and another 141 injured. Police shot dead four of the attackers and detained four other suspects.

Guiyang to Kunming railway build in 1960s, the most famous bridge in this railway is Tianshengxia bridge located in Beipanjiang Tianshengqiao section. Old Tianshengxia bridge has 55m high and total length 445m, in 2012, new Guiyang to Kunming double track railway completed, build a larger new Tianshengxia bridge with 104m high,just parallel the old bridge. From this video's 24:00 to 25:00 we can seen the Tianshengxia bridge(Tianshengqiao, in Chinese means nature arch bridge)
The Tianshengxia bridge's most intersting thing is it in fact build on a giant nature arch more than 300m high. Beipanjiang cross a hole beneath this nature arch ,the old and new railway bridge all located on this giant limestone arch strcture. At 1960s Chinese engineers can't overcome great difficulties to cross nearly 1000m deep Beipanjiang gorge,so they choice cross this river through it's only nature arch to reduce high of the bridge. Now people can use long tunnels to reduce bridge's height, but mordern day Beipanjiang railway bridges still need nearly 300m high above this the most narrow canyon in the world.

Kunming is a jumping-off point for travel to Lijiang and Dali, so it's a major transporation hub for a lot of travelers who don't really see the value of of Kunming itself.

The headquarters of many of Yunnan's large businesses are in Kunming as well. It was important during World War II as a Chinese military center, American air base, and transport terminus for the Burma Road. Located in the middle of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Kunming is located at an altitude of 1,900 m above sea level and at a latitude just north of the Tropic of Cancer. It covers an area of 21,473 km2}} and its urban area covers 2,081 km². Kunming has population of 6,432,2120 including 3,055,000 in the urban area and is located at the northern edge of the large Lake Dian, surrounded by temples and lake-and-limestone hill landscapes.
Kunming consists of an old, previously walled city, a modern commercial district, residential and university areas. The city has an astronomical observatory, and its institutions of higher learning include Yunnan University, Yunnan Normal University and a medical college. On the outskirts is a famed bronze temple, dating from the Ming dynasty. Kunming was formerly called Yunnanfu (云南府; literally meaning "Yunnan Capital") until the 1920s.
Its economic importance derives from its geographical position. Positioned near the border with Southeastern Asian countries, serving as a transportation hub in Southwest China, linking by rail to Vietnam and by road to Burma and Laos. This positioning also makes it an important trade center in this region of the nation. It also houses some manufacturing, chiefly copper, though some other chemicals, machinery, textiles, paper and cement take key. The video shows the awing moments of how a group of assailants armed with knives attacked civilians at a railway station in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province. The attack left 31 dead and another 141 injured. Police shot dead four of the attackers and detained four other suspects.

Guiyang to Kunming railway build in 1960s, the most famous bridge in this railway is Tianshengxia bridge located in Beipanjiang Tianshengqiao section. Old Tianshengxia bridge has 55m high and total length 445m, in 2012, new Guiyang to Kunming double track railway completed, build a larger new Tianshengxia bridge with 104m high,just parallel the old bridge. From this video's 24:00 to 25:00 we can seen the Tianshengxia bridge(Tianshengqiao, in Chinese means nature arch bridge)
The Tianshengxia bridge's most intersting thing is it in fact build on a giant nature arch more than 300m high. Beipanjiang cross a hole beneath this nature arch ,the old and new railway bridge all located on this giant limestone arch strcture. At 1960s Chinese engineers can't overcome great difficulties to cross nearly 1000m deep Beipanjiang gorge,so they choice cross this river through it's only nature arch to reduce high of the bridge. Now people can use long tunnels to reduce bridge's height, but mordern day Beipanjiang railway bridges still need nearly 300m high above this the most narrow canyon in the world.

Total cost for 2 person (I ate a lot haha & we spend a lot on food) around RM4500 for two person (include shopping). Lijiang is a great place to visit, (we should spend more time there). Hi guys, this is the full Travel Vlog to Lijiang & Kunming, China. Backpacking for 7 Days. 3 days in Lijiang and 3 days in Kunming.
Total cost for 2 person (I ate a lot haha & we spend a lot on food) around RM4500 for two person (include shopping). Lijiang is a great place to visit, (we should spend more time there).
We only backpack refer to our itinery planner book (thanks to haja for your itinery) and just follow it. Try to always be flexible and be nice to people around us.
I dont even understand chinese but we did it! We found the right place and able to explore the place.

Where we stayed:
We slept at the Zen Garden Hotel. The room was a littlebit disappointing for the price, but you also pay for the great location in the middle of the old town! And eventually the bed was good. Cookies are amazing, hotel staff is friendly, and just walking out the door you walk into the old town. The common room is very beautiful.

A travel agency in Yunnan province has been forced to suspend operations after one of its employees was filmed unleashing a rant on a bus full of visitors because they weren't spending enough at scenic spots.
The guide, Chen Chunyuan, had her license revoked and her employer, the Kunming Fenghua Travel Agency, was fined 20,000 yuan.
The ordeal went down on April 12 as the group was traveling from Lijiang to Kunming and was headed for Xishuangbanna, according to a report on People's Daily. Video footage showing the guide 'venting frustration' on the travelers because they failed to spend enough money at a jewelry shop went viral after being posted on May 1.
"The bus is prepared for tourists who have moral standards and conscience. If you do not have these, you are not fit to sit here," Chen had said angrily.
"If each of you cannot spend 3,000 to 4,000 yuan, we will cancel the trip. Your flight tickets home will also not be covered in this trip as well," she went on.
"You need to at least spend for the sake of your conscience. If you cannot do that, there will be retributions coming to you," she added.
The China National Tourism Administration investigated the incident as soon as it began circulating online.
Tour guides commonly arrange deals with shops at scenic spots and encourage travelers to spend there as a way to earn commission. In February, a Harbin woman complained that a tour guide in Hong Kong refused to take the group to Disneyland unless each person spent 4,000 RMB at a jewelry store.

The Stone Forest "Shilin" is a notable set of limestone formations located in Shilin Yi County, Yunnan Province, China, approximately 120 km (75 mi) from Kunming. The tall rocks seem to emanate from the ground in the manner of stalagmites, with many looking like petrified trees thereby creating the illusion of a forest made of stone. Since 2007, two parts of the site, the Naigu Stone Forest and Suogeyi Village have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites as part of the South China Karst. The site is classified as a AAAAA-class tourist site.
Southwest China includes Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Guangxi provinces and Chongqing municipality. It had long been the Wild, Wild West of China dated back to 221 BC, and people who lived here had long been called as Xinan Yi , literally, southwestern foreigners or barbarians.

The Stone Forest "Shilin" is a notable set of limestone formations located in Shilin Yi County, Yunnan Province, China, approximately 120 km (75 mi) from Kunming. The tall rocks seem to emanate from the ground in the manner of stalagmites, with many looking like petrified trees thereby creating the illusion of a forest made of stone. Since 2007, two parts of the site, the Naigu Stone Forest and Suogeyi Village have been UNESCO World Heritage Sites as part of the South China Karst. The site is classified as a AAAAA-class tourist site.
Southwest China includes Yunnan, Guizhou, Sichuan, Guangxi provinces and Chongqing municipality. It had long been the Wild, Wild West of China dated back to 221 BC, and people who lived here had long been called as Xinan Yi , literally, southwestern foreigners or barbarians.
