Three experienced paragliding pilots, Thomas de Dorlodot, Horacio Llorens and Hernan Pitocco arrive in the Karakoram mountain range in Northern Pakistan aiming to break records. Follow them as they explore the legendary Karakoram Highway, seeking to break the world record for the highest altitude and longest distance Himalayan flight.
Their journey takes them deep into the mountain communities of Pakistan, where Thomas, Horacio and Hernan are welcomed by the local people, invited into a way of life that has existed for centuries. From the ground, these communities guide them and stand in awe as they soar above glorious peaks, the highest concentration of 7,000 meter peaks in the world.
Mixing sheer distance and height with astounding aerobatics the team revels in the freedom that these vast landscapes offer. As they fly cross country surrounded by alpine scenery and reaching distances of over 200km, it becomes apparent that in this remote corner of the world they have found some of the earth’s finest paragliding.

A glossy highway and lorries transporting Chinese workers: the new Silk Road is under construction in northern Pakistan

The Karakoram Highway (KKH) runs from Kashgar in Western China to Islamabad in Pakistan, and isn't so much a highway as a 'high road'. It took a stunning 20 years to finish the road, and even today it continues to suffer from extreme weather and environmental disasters.
The KKH runs through the highest concentration of soaring mountain peaks and raging rivers in the world, and is generally considered to be among the most spectacular areas on our planet. Traveling here isn't for the faint hearted, although transportation has improved significantly in the past decades.
In October 2010 I had the chance to travel the Karakoram Highway. Although Pakistan had suffered its worst floods in recent history the same year, most parts of the road were still intact. Nevertheless, traveling the road proved a massive challenge and also a great adventure. As these events had scared off many tourists and travelers, I found myself among locals for nearly all of the time.

The Karakoram Highway is the highest paved road on earth. This mountainous stretch of highway runs between western China and Pakistan, and it’s one of the very few routes that crosses through the Himalayas.
Our journey begins in Kashgar, a city in the far west of China’s XinJiang Province. From here, we’ll take a van as far as we can, all the way to the border of China and Pakistan. The natural scenery here is stunningly beautiful.
Our first stop is at White Sand Lake. Dry desert hills and a massive body of water contrast with each other, making this lake a stunning sight to behold. Here, a few Kyrgyz families live in small houses along the lake and peddle precious stones to the occasional visitor.
Only 30 kilometers further and we’ve reached Karakul Lake. Crystal clear water, snow-capped mountains and roaming camels are a part of everyday life here. Sitting at 12,000 feet above sea level, the scenery here is literally breathtaking. Even while resting, I find myself gasping for air.

This movie is a video diary covering a 15 hour drive on 23 September 2014 from the Hunza Valley in Northern Pakistan to Islamabad on the Karakoram Highway which follows much of the old Silk Road. Prior to this Rod Macdonald and Fahd Chinoy were trekking in Hunza a wonderful picturesque area that separates the Hindu Kush Mountains from the Karakorums. Thanks to the Aga Khan Foundation, Hunza is becoming one of the most educated parts of the Northern Areas if not of the entire country of Pakistan. Our thanks go out to the Pakistan Frontier Police who helped keep us safe during the drive and to Kamal Chinoy of Pakistan Cables for enabling the trip.

A fly-through tour of part of the stunning Karakoram mountains in the North-West Himalayas. Some of the most magnificent images rendered in Google Earth.
To give some idea of scale, the eye altitude of the tour is 21,600 ft and some of the valleys are 9000 ft, so these mountains (like K2) have almost vertical faces of 12000 ft or more. There are more of the highest mountains in the world in the Karakoram range than anywhere else.

Karakoram
The Karakoram, or Karakorum is a large mountain range spanning the borders between Pakistan, India and China, located in the regions of Gilgit–Baltistan (Pakistan), Ladakh (India), and southern Xinjiang (China). A part of the complex of ranges from the Hindu Kush to the Himalayan Range, it is one of the Greater Ranges of Asia. The Karakoram is home to the highest concentration of peaks over 8000m in height to be found anywhere on earth, including K2, the second highest peak in the world at 8,611 m (28,251 ft).
The range is about 500 km (311 mi) in length, and is the most heavily glaciated part of the world outside the polar regions. The Siachen Glacier at 76 kilometres (47 mi) and the Biafo Glacier at 63 kilometres (39 mi) rank as the world's second and third longest glaciers outside the polar regions.
The Karakoram is bounded on the northeast by the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, and on the north by the Pamir Mountains. The southern boundary of the Karakoram is formed, west to east, by the Gilgit, Indus, and Shyok Rivers, which separate the range from the northwestern end of the Himalaya range proper as these rivers converge southwestward towards the plains of Pakistan.

Our first stop is at White Sand Lake. Dry desert hills and a massive body of water contrast with each other, making this lake a stunning sight to behold. Here, a few Kyrgyz families live in small houses along the lake and peddle precious stones to the occasional visitor.
Only 30 kilometers further and we’ve reached Karakul Lake. Crystal clear water, snow-capped mountains and roaming camels are a part of everyday life here. Sitting at 12,000 feet above sea level, the scenery here is literally breathtaking. Even while resting, I find myself gasping for air.

The Karakoram Highway is the highest paved road on earth. This mountainous stretch of highway runs between western China and Pakistan, and it’s one of the very few routes that crosses through the Himalayas.
Our journey begins in Kashgar, a city in the far west of China’s XinJiang Province. From here, we’ll take a van as far as we can, all the way to the border of China and Pakistan. The natural scenery here is stunningly beautiful.

Prior to this Rod Macdonald and Fahd Chinoy were trekking in Hunza a wonderful picturesque area that separates the Hindu Kush Mountains from the Karakorums. Thanks to the Aga Khan Foundation, Hunza is becoming one of the most educated parts of the Northern Areas if not of the entire country of Pakistan. Our thanks go out to the Pakistan Frontier Police who helped keep us safe during the drive and to Kamal Chinoy of Pakistan Cables for enabling the trip.

The Karakoram Highway is one of those legendary roads to travel in Asia. The name implies it's a big 2 or 4 way street. In fact, it's not even close to a "highway" but it is a road. This road is the road that connects Pakistan to China, for many years. It's a magnificent road!
KKH as it is known starts actually in Abbottabad. Up to this town the road is 4 way street and pretty busy.
The legend of the KKH is long and spectacular. Everybody has heard of the legendary Silk Road. As the legend goes, it was the road where silk was transported from China to Europe. The truth of the Silk Road is slightly different.
In the old days there were no merchants traveling the whole route. In fact, silk and other goods from China were transported via different roads, which includes the legendary road Marco Polo traveled. However, goods were usually traded in cities on the roads going west and south (looking from Chinese perspective.
Therefore we can't say there was one Silk Road. In fact, there were many. The Karakoram Highway as we know the road nowadays was one of those Silk Roads. From Kashgar (or Kashi as it is known in China) goods were transported over the Khunjarab Pass to the lower lands of the western Indian subcontinent. It was a hard and dangerous road. And even today, it's still a hard road.
The Karakoram highway ends in Kashgar, the great trade city in the far west of China. Marco Polo writes about Kashgar. Walking on the legendary market, and reading Marco Polo's diary, one can see there's not much changed in 700 years. Kashgars' Sunday Market is still a must have seen in the whole of Central Asia and China.
