Tourist snaps memorable sunset picture on Darwin Esplanade

A CHANCE photograph of Darwin’s famous sunset revealed a silhouette in the trees with a striking resemblance to the map of Australia.

Kelly Matthews, visiting from Derby, Western Australia, said she didn’t realise she’d captured such a remarkable photo until her friends started commenting on it.

“After I took it all my friends said ‘It looks like a map of Australia’,” she said.

Ms Matthews, who is visiting Darwin for a wedding, said the photo would make a good memento of her trip.

“I’ve visited every state and territory in Australia now, so it’s like the map is complete, it’s perfect,” she said.

“I just love taking photos.”

Ms Matthews, on her first trip to the NT, said she rushed to the Esplanade to take sunset photos as soon as she arrived, and said she hoped the spot – near the cenotaph – would become a stop on the tourist trail.
