From the producer of CLASH OF THE TITANS and THE TOWN comes a tale of adrenaline-fueled revenge and redemption. When a retired hit man is forced back into action by a sadistic young thug, he hunts down his adversaries with the skill and ruthlessness that made him an underworld legend.

It's not perfect. But it is special, especially for a mid-budget Hollywood action drama, and it has stuck firmly in my mind since that late-night screening last Friday.
Sophie Gilbert
Stahelski and Leitch, both former stunt men, unsurprisingly tackle action sequences with glee... but the quieter scenes are more sophisticated, incorporating a sense of fantasy and visual splendor that almost makes the wafer-thin plot feel fresh.
Cary Darling
Yet, for all the film's stylishness and a body count worthy of a small civil war, there's no getting around the fact that stiff, stoic Reeves -- who is capable of a few funny, deadpan lines -- isn't a particularly compelling lead action figure.
Bruce Diones
Stylishly violent and not much else.
Richard Corliss
Action movies are about movement, and John Wick pursues that goal with remorseless verve.
Joshua Rothkopf
John Wick feels like action manna for its cleanly designed gun-fu sequences... but the revenge plotting is deeply dopey and we shouldn't have to choose one or the other.

John Wick is a rousing action thriller of the sort rarely encountered in theaters these days.

Initially, I laughed when I saw the descriptions of the premise for this movie coupled with its very high ratings. I mean, come on: "My name is John Wick. You killed my dawg. Prepare to die." Imagine my surprise when I found that the darn movie actually works and is Very Good (I'm rating it at 4 stars out of 5). The issue was that the premise I had been reading wasn't actually complete. Instead, it should read: "My name is John Wick. I'm not a good man. But, for my wife, I was trying. You killed my dawg. The last gift from my wife and my last hope. Prepare to die." We're not talking Shakespeare, here. We're talking a Murder Death Kill type of movie. And, it works. I've got only one complaint with the whole thing: [minor spoiler] at one point, the bad guys have John down. Instead of ending it right there, the bad boss has him taken back to a lair so he can gloat and prepare the shark-mounted lasers (well, not really). This is the same guy who practically soiled himself when he found out someone in his organization had done John wrong. Yet, given the chance to get clear of it, he blows it [/minor spoiler]. Other than that, I've got no problems with the movie.
A silly movie I like action just as much as the next guy, but the movie just doesn't really make a lot of sense. None of the plot is believable, yet it's filmed in a serious way. It should be one of those over-the-top action movies, where you're laughing half the time, and you're well aware that it's fantasy, but it tries to take itself seriously. This movie is Taken (2008), but instead of the ex-assassin/agent's daughter being kidnapped, his car was stolen and dog killed. That alone makes me giggle. Hello, my name is John Wick, you killed my dog, prepare to die. 47 bodies later, he finds himself in an animal shelter and picks out a new dog. Like, what?? Really? I laughed out loud.
Rushed and Dingy I left myself with an open mind for this one and unfortunately paid for it with my time and movie theater ticket. I want both back. This one seemed too rushed. Produced in one night? That's what it feels like anyway. Story has some pretty huge holes in it if you ask the right questions. Character doesn't live up to internalized description. I know it's not the perfect movie up and down but if you can forgive a crumbling story and expensive effects, then Keanu did a good job with what he had.
Generic Action Flick, As Expected I rented this to watch a generic action movie and see how Keanu is doing. I got a generic action flick, and Keanu is still the emotionless android we've all come to know and feel nothing for. The plot of the "film" is very simple. Keanu is a reformed assassin who married and got out of the business. His former employer's son kills his dog and steals his car without knowing who Keanu his. This made Keanu upset, so he killed everybody. The end. Also Willem Dafoe is in there for about 5 minutes. Also Mayhem, from the GEICO commercials..
What trash. There's absolutely no moment where you feel like our main character is even trying. The action is darkly lit with horrible camera direction, most times you'll be wondering what the hell is happening until he stumbles his way into shooting the next guy 4-8 times. Infinite ammo seems to be a thing here, too. And when everyone tells you how great John is...and we have to take their word because nothing we see is anything special...it's PR horsecrap to compare this to The Matrix. Just watch The Raid instead.
MY NEW FAVORITE MOVIE!! THE ACTION SCENES ARE SICK! & BY THAT I MEAN SLANG FOR GREAT!, THE GUN FIGHTS & COMBAT IN THIS MOVIE IS VERY WELL DONE, I'M AN ANIMAL LOVER SO DONT TAKE THIS THE WRONG WAY... I LIKE HOW HIS CAR WAS STOLEN & DOG WAS KILLED(IN A DIFFRENT PLOT TYPE OF WAY) WHERE AS MOVIES OVER KILLED SOMEONE'S FAMILY MEMBER BEING KIDNAPPED LIKE "TAKEN" ALL PARTS WERE GREAT BUT ITS GREAT TO SEE SOMETHIN DIFFRENT & IF YOU LIKE ACTIONS MOVIES & WON'T LOVE OR ATLEAST LIKE THIS MOVIE SOMETHIN IS SERIOUSLY WRONG WIT YOU! REAL TALK
Great Action! Tearjerking exploits of what happened to John Wick after his wife died and his puppy, which was the last present his wife gave him, is murdered because a mobster's brat wants John's car. The movie then turns into a revenge flick as you discover more about John's past as he begins his rampage to track Junior down through the mafia underworld leading to violence and destruction. Lesson learned, don't kill a man's puppy.
absolutely terrible pile of garbage If I could give this piece of crap 0 stars I would. This is easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Even cheesy 80s action movies like Cobra had better writing. So many other reviewers already pointed out so many of the completely terrible plot holes, nonsense, and idiocy that I'll just leave most of that out of this review. That being said, there's terrible video games with better stories than this movie. You'd be better off staring at a wall while punching yourself in the side of the head for 2 hours than watching this piece of crap. Skip it.
Those reload times I always hated those action flicks where Everyone seems to have an unlimited ammo clip. This movie does well to make reloading an actual factor in making the film seem more realistic. Also, I loved the double taps he did. I mean, how many times have we seen a protagonist shoot someone and then get shot by that person because they neglected to make sure it was a killshot?!
Refreshing, even if not perfect The movie showed many aspects of an action movie that Hollywood has been drifting from (ultimately for the worst) and was very refreshing to see stunts performed in front of a stable camera rather than shaky cam and CGI gimmicks. Initially, you really feel Wick's justification in showing Iosef a lesson he really needs to learn, but as time goes on it does feel kind of ridiculous when remembering this all started from *spoiler* a dog getting killed. I think the movie could have effectively used flashbacks to his wife to keep that initial feeling throughout the movie, but they don't and feels like it all becomes an excuse to get the plot moving. I'm sure others have said it, but Reeves is still a little lifeless and disconnected, which works during the start, but quickly becomes "ugh" inducing. Fortunately, he doesn't get into dialogue too much to make it movie-breaking. Other than that, the casting choices were pretty spot on and the movie had its good comedic irony moments that work very well. One thing could have completely removed though...those childish looking colored subtitles. Oh well... All in all not a bad movie and refreshing from the stereotypical action movie.
Solid Action Good straight forward criminal underworld revenge flick. Movies this good are usually Asian. See The Man from Nowhere/Infernal Affairs/The Raid. Nice to see a very good American film that holds it own in this genre. (spoilers) Synopsis: Ex bad guy is brought back into the world he left behind when other bad guys, who never heard of him, steal his car and kill his dog. He demonstrates through the whole movie why he was considered a legend. As one of the mobsters states, "He's not the boogeyman, he's the f***er you send to KILL the boogeyman!" Great action flick, really can't say enough.
This is not usually the kind of movie I watch, but since hearing the buzz around the second installment, might as well give it a try. I don't regret it. This movie is SICK! I didn't know I like the revenge plot a lot than I expected. Less talk, less complication, just FULL ACTION-PACKED. When someone screws you over, this is the movie to watch. You get that satisfaction from his bad-ass revenge. That moment where he got vocal about how the dog meant to him after his wife's passing, makes me feel how badly he was pissed off. I like that he didn't have to kill Ms. Perkins. I'm all excited to see the second movie now.
When you stop being bad and someone pushes you back to that place... I absolutely loved how John Wick delivered the pain. Spoiler Alert - after losing his wife John decides to settle with his depression of loss and the last gift his wife gave him. But when some punk young thugs in training take two things most precious to John - he snaps. Revenge justice will be served. They messed with the wrong guy...great story, great action! Revenge is a dish best given to all the guilty.
Shocked...Liked It! Believe it or not, I actually did enjoy and like this movie. At times, was skeptical, but it did deliver for me, especially the ending, though, is any movie "actually complete"..... Know most people will hate it, give Keanu crap (bad actor, no acting ability, crappy movie, & so on...); but I do feel that this was a good movie. Rating little higher than "47 Ronin" (last movie saw w/ Keanu Reeves). With a career that spans many years from: "Point Break", "Little Buddha", "Speed", Johnny Mnemonic", "Bill & Ted's", "Chain Reaction (another ""Good Movie""), "The Replacements", "The Matrix Trilogy", etc... Please give this movie a chance, He's an acquired taste kind of actor, but on merit/acting alone, and story, etc....This really is a good entertaining suspenseful action movie that i think you will LIKE! My Rating(based on: Story, Plot, Acting, Character development, Actors themselves=right person for job, writing of script, adaptation to movie, entertaining, cheesy, etc...) is 4.77/5; & YES on Purchasing The Movie! Hope you ENJOY....
Sweet revenge movie Its funny people saying its "over the top". That's what a action movie is supposed to be and it wasn't all that over the top like a jason statham movie. It was a good revenge story and justifiably so (for all the haters complaining it was because of his dog). His dead wife gave him that dog. Have a heart. And the ending is just what it is. So quit your whining and giving it bad reviews based on keanu's acting. What would you rather have seen, Gary oldman in that role I mean c'mon. Keanu was perfect.
Rejoice action fans, Neo has returned We've seen this movie before. The storyline is basic, the script is lazy, and the star is one thought to be out of his prime. So why is John Wick different from all of the rest? It has no limits. Everything is taken to the extreme, the excess blood, the number of Russian gangsters, the cliques, the sweet cars, etc. The movie refuses to hold anything back, and in a age where most movies hold back to lower the movie's rating, that's rare.
Ultra-violent ultra-nonsense Despite the fine cast this is a generic and highly predictable on-rails action shooter. The tissue thin plot plays out as a videogame where the protagonist must work his way through several sub-bosses in order to face the end of level enemy and collect his reward. However, this film wears it's B-movie credentials on its sleeve and is an enjoyable romp very much in the vein of John Woo's Hard Boiled and other Hong Kong 90's action classics.
John Wick is a great action flick. It all boils down to the importance of man's best friend. My favorite aspect is the gunfights. They aren't the typical shooting from cover with endless clips. John has to reload regularly as do his enemies. A definite addition of awesome is the manner in which John dispatches his opponents. He doesn't just shoot them once as many are double taps. Very artistic as Hollywood gunfights are concerned and it shows the degree of professionalism John has as a retired hitman. I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to see an action movie that breaks free from some of the more common practices.
What is going on? I'm trying to understand what just happened. ...... *Spoiler*... ok , so one punk as kid gets the drop on him. Almost kills him in less than 20 seconds. Kills his dog, which is a HUGE insult. Then all of a sudden he becomes unstoppable killing machine? ???? Why didn't he use any of his fighting abilities to save his dog from the get go?????
MonoLikethaspeakers Vs John Wick "John Wick" is about a retired hitman after a series of unfortunate events is forced out of retirement. How can is say this. John Wick is BADASS!! You get introduced into this world thats so awesome and crazy full of interesting character's that some Of them aren't even in the film for a max of 5min but could easily hold there own movie. Its cool cause you can tell that john is kinda rusty makes you wonder how he was in his prime?? "Rating 5 Hitman Hotels out of 5"
Astonishingly cheesy, almost plot-free While it did manage to make me weep in the first 20 minutes with an ASPCA moment (don't watch if you can't stand animal cruelty), this movie lacked any depth, the violence was pretty gratuitous and stereotypical, and very little acting was required by any of the actors. It was remarkable in just how much money they spent to make this really bad movie. A real shame.
Absolutely fantastic "Guy Movie" One of my favorite movies of the year, and one of the best action flicks in YEARS. Keanu comes off as superhuman as far as the gun-fu sequences (which are like nothing you've ever seen before), yet Keanu does a fine job of portraying how broken John Wick actually is. One scene in particular in the beginning (when he wronged) is heart-breaking/gut-wrenching. It's a subtle visual only, but one that justifies his actions completely from that point forward. It will make YOU as angry as he is. Loved it.
Action! The fight sequences are well thought out and the camera work and editing actually let you see what is going on. It is clear that everyone involved from actors, to stunt men, to the director all know how to throw a punch or kick. The simple plot stays out of the way but still manages to develop our antihero enough that we actually care. This is what action movies from the 80s and 90s should have evolved to but somewhere along the way they got lost. Great film for the action or martial arts film lover!
Awesome Adding it to the list of my favorites. Ignore the bad reviews. If you're looking for a twisty turny storyline that tells more than one story, it's probably not for you, howerver; if you like a movie filled with violence, muscle, and adrenaline, I don't believe you will be disappointed. To the bad reviewers: sit back and take it how it is. Please don't criticize an action movie on a criteria that is unrelated. This is a pure action flick.
Under Rated Movie This movie is dismissed by many. But the layers of the story, might yes be over the top. But it does have characters that drag you into that world. The hotel concept where all these professional hitmen and women can stay knowing what would happen if they broke the rules is intriguing by itself. This hotel should have a movie of its own and tell a few venuettes of several assassins and they're stay at the hotel. Keanu Reeves you are a great actor, just under appreciated. Here is drink to you Mr. Wick.
Stupid How in the world does this have such good ratings. If you want to watch someone get shot up go play a video game... at least you will have a better story. B movie material shot on high budget equipment.
Killer cult classic 2014! John Wick kills some 77 baddies in this film. Impressive yes, but what's REALLY impressive is how he does it. Keanu Reeves has been studying martial arts for years and its on full display in this film. His proficiency in jujitsu (American) and his gun fighting make for an exciting game of "how's he gonna kill the next guy!?" The choreography and cinematography of John Wick is seamless and the story captivating. WATCH if you love martial arts, Keanu Reeves, wanna take a trip inside a new, epic world of crime
Reeves again says little and does a lot I'm glad that I don't watch movies to award them Oscars, given a action movie with blood and violence, that aspiring to do anything more than make me wonder who next to get it in the head, as stylistically as possible, with an antihero you really want to survive the mayhem. Mr Reeves unsmiling deadpan performances, are the essence of a hit man for me, had he been smiling and ruining the action, throwing one liners around the movie would have really suffer,
Clean revenge, don't mess with a man's dog. This film builds its own universe and makes me curious as to how it works, the whole assassin hotel thing is interesting and they can make more films based on that. This is non-stop action and it doesn't ever feel over the top. Too often you see action stars doing things that don't make sense in this film Keanu Reeves character is able to get your adrenaline pumping without lying to you. Every dog owner out there can relate to his anger.
Uhh not very good Horrible acting, bad story! Don't waist your money or more importantly your time. "The Equilizer" is so much better than this movie.
I hear there's a an amazing sequel trailer tease. (Mindless entertainment. Vito can't act. His son is an idiot) It wasn't just the dog, it was his car too. And you saw what he did for fun, was drive like a maniac at the airport. John Wick was bored, being unemployed, retired. He had to go back to work, get some excitement back in his life)
John Wick, lighting the candle at every end possible! Excellent action, perfect casting, sad make you cry if you love animals and get a sense of overwhelming hatred for bad guys and totally understand good guy's pain and suffering and want what he wants so you feel a bond/connection with hero type of film. An obvious buckle in and hold on tight action loaded heavy hitting kill everyone who allowed, benefited or didn't care about good guy's anguish type of film, which I love, and being a gigantically enormously big fan of Keanu and his films, it made it that much more and meant even more to me, myself. Go. Watch. John Wick. Now!
Like cotton candy- fun but not filling This is a really one dimensional movie. So much more could have been done with it. Action sequences and fight scenes are well choreographed, but there is no character development, and so little back story you wonder if there was ever any intent to provide one (I suspect that there was and it got cut). If there had been, this could have been a much better movie. Why do so many people expect so little from Hollywood that this rates any more than 2/4 stars?
John Wick. Can somebody call a script doctor? Ok, I get it, it's a guy action flick, but I have video games with better plots than this. Keanu Reeves, I've been a fan a long time, but this was painful. Great villians, zero hero. Almost everyone in the movie was better than him. William Dafoe, others great, but. you know you've got problems when that cute Mayhem from Geico steals the show. Beautiful photography, stunts, script concept. A lot of people liked it. I gave it 3 stars out of respect to the cast and crew who obviously put a lot of effort in.
Gung-Fu at its best While the script and story are really nothing special and leave plenty to desire, the action scenes themselves make up for that in a very entertaining movie.
Best action movie in years The plot is very simple: his wife has died, and they've killed his dog and taken his car. John Wick, the almost invincible assassin, goes after the men that took the 2 things that he cared for most away from him. However, what sets this film apart is that it's excellently done. The score perfectly fits the mood at any given time, and the action scenes are very well executed; you know exactly what's going on at all times during the movie.
It is what it is, and what "John Wick" is, is an unabashedly thrilling action movie that does away with elaborate plots and dastardly villains for stunningly well-choreographed gunplay, fittingly thrumming soundtrack and a no-nonsense approach to the action genre of films. For the film, the concept of plot is more like a guideline that streamlines the high-octane warpath to revenge that is John Wick, but does so in a way that makes it all feel acceptable. It may not be the next "Die Hard", but the pacing and plot of "John Wick" is just well executed enough for viewers not to feel bored or incredulous at the movie as it unfolds, and treats those who stick with it to a wild 'Hotline Miami-esque' ride of violence and satisfaction.
Its an OK film I watched it because they said it was his best film since the matrix. It was not. It was an OK movie, with an overused storyline, filled with boring archetypes.
Pretty cool Tons of action, loads of amazing fight sequences and the violence was perfect. The plot was a bit overkill though. I feel like all that death Jon Wick caused should have been over something else (hence my 4/5 stars) lol. But great movie and Keanu Reeves' acting is really good. He's showing a wide range of obvious emotion in this too which is rare for him.
Keanu Reeves He's a remarkable actor. His martial arts? Flawless!! Reeves just makes it feel so natural and smooth; making it look easy. The movie has a great story AND breathtaking action scenes. Lately action movies tend to have horrible story lines with even worse action scenes. We actually grow to care for the main character and his friends. Movies don't get this from us anymore. We don't care by the end who died or even if the characters happy. Basically I highly recommend it;).
