Plot
Rise and Shine: The Jay DeMerit Story is the true story of a young American's impossible journey. After college, Jay's dream of playing pro soccer in Europe seemed unreachable. Sleeping in an attic, painting houses and eating beans and toast to survive, Jay took the most unlikely route to the top. After not making the professional leagues in the U.S., Jay left for Europe at the age of 21 without any professional experience - only a passport, $1800 and a backpack full of dreams. The film documents Jay's journey from the bottom - playing in Sunday park leagues and lower level division London clubs earning 40 pounds a week - to playing in the English Premier League - to starting in the world's greatest sports stage - the 2010 World Cup. The Jay DeMerit Story is a story of perseverance, hard work and a relentless belief in a dream...it is a story that needs to be told.

The Fight For A Dream
Subject of film: I've always been... interested in-in-in the adventure side of things - in taking chances, taking risks - because the bigger risk you take, the bigger incentive there is at the end. And for me, there was no bigger incentive than to play professional soccer in Europe, because I knew that I'd seen it on TV - I'd watched Man United; I'd watched Liverpool; I'd been to Europe; I'd seen games - and I just thought, "Well, if I can get to the pinnacle of my profession, it's gotta be in Europe, it's gotta be there, and I gotta take that chance."
Jay's Friend: Like, I just saw the potential - like, I knew he needed work, but the raw potential was, like - man! - he can play.
Bolton FC: You know, they talk about the odds of becoming... from a college soccer player to becoming a pro, and becoming from a regular soccer player to becoming a pro-athlete, and then you think about the few that are privileged to... to be the twenty-three best in... in the... in your nation and, uh, representing your country as a whole in the... in the World Cup, and it really... it really kind of puts things into perspective for you.
Subject of film: At the moment you're in the top thirty players in the whole of the country of - how many? - 300... 400 million people. You know, it's like when you think about what that means, and what that means to put on that shirt and... and to play against all the rest of the best of the other countries, you know, it really defines what this sport's all about.
Subject of film: Some people might say that I was lucky, but I don't believe in luck. I believe in hard work and perseverance to achieve your goals.
Subject of film: Remember that the poorest person isn't the person that doesn't have a dollar. It's the person who has given up, the person without hope, the person without a dream.
USMNT Coach: And one of the things that, uh, I've always, uh, enjoyed during the time that I've had a chance to work with Jay is, um, he's fearless. Whether he's playing against a big name forward or not, there's part of him that... that, as he walks out the locker room onto the field, he gives you, uh... a little wink, and he gives you the confidence that "I'm ready for it; I'm gonna give you everything I have." And that fearless mentality, uh... that... that really pays off because it spreads itself around the team. It gives teammates confidence that over the course of ninety or a hundred twenty minutes, um, that's a player that you can just count on. And I think that, as we had a chance to get to know him better, that's really been... been the most important thing that he's brought to our team.
Everton Football Club are an English professional association football club from the city of Liverpool. The club competes in the Premier League, the highest level of English football. They have competed in the top division for a record 108 seasons, they have played more top-flight league games than any other English team and have won the League Championship nine times—the fourth most of any team. Everton have remained in the top division since 1954, and were founding members of the Premier League in 1992.
Formed in 1878, Everton were founding members of The Football League in 1888 and won their first league championship two seasons later. Following four league titles and two FA Cup wins, Everton experienced a lull in the immediate post World War Two period until a revival in the 1960s, which saw the club win two league championships and an FA Cup. The mid-1980s represented their most recent period of success, with two League Championship successes, an FA Cup, and the 1985 European Cup Winners' Cup—their first continental trophy. The club's most recent major trophy was the 1995 FA Cup. The club's supporters are known as Evertonians. Everton have a large fanbase and regularly attract high attendances, averaging over 36,000 people per game: 95% of stadium capacity. Everton have a notable rivalry with neighbours Liverpool F.C. and the two sides regularly contest the Merseyside Derby. Liverpool F.C. were formed in 1892 by a breakaway group consisting of Everton's former president and a few players. The dispute also resulted in Everton leaving Anfield, their home ground at the time. The club have been based at their current home ground, Goodison Park, since 1892. Plans to move to a new 50,000 seater expandable stadium in Kirkby on the Liverpool city border were blocked by a public enquiry in 2009.
