The Williamsburg Bridge is a suspension bridge in New York City across the East River connecting the Lower East Side of Manhattan at Delancey Street with the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn at Broadway near the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (Interstate 278). It once carried New York State Route 27A and was planned to carry Interstate 78, though the planned I-78 designation was aborted by the cancellation of the Lower Manhattan Expressway and Bushwick Expressway.
This is one of four toll-free crossings between Manhattan and Long Island. The others are the Queensboro, Manhattan, and Brooklyn Bridges.
Construction on the bridge, the second to cross this river, began in 1896, with Leffert L. Buck as chief engineer, Henry Hornbostel as architect and Holton D. Robinson as assistant engineer, and the bridge opened on December 19, 1903 at a cost of $24,200,000. At the time it was constructed, the Williamsburg Bridge set the record for the longest suspension bridge span on Earth. The record fell in 1924, when the Bear Mountain Bridge was completed.
Williamsburg may refer to:
A bridge is a structure built to span physical obstacles without closing the way underneath such as a body of water, valley, or road, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle. There are many different designs that each serve a particular purpose and apply to different situations. Designs of bridges vary depending on the function of the bridge, the nature of the terrain where the bridge is constructed and anchored, the material used to make it, and the funds available to build it.
The Oxford English Dictionary traces the origin of the word bridge to an Old English word brycg, of the same meaning. The word can be traced directly back to Proto-Indo-European *bʰrēw-. The word for the card game of the same name has a different origin.
The first bridges made by humans were probably spans of cut wooden logs or planks and eventually stones, using a simple support and crossbeam arrangement. Some early Americans used trees or bamboo poles to cross small caverns or wells to get from one place to another. A common form of lashing sticks, logs, and deciduous branches together involved the use of long reeds or other harvested fibers woven together to form a connective rope capable of binding and holding together the materials used in early bridges.
New York is a state in the Northeastern United States and is the United States' 27th-most extensive, fourth-most populous, and seventh-most densely populated state. New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south and Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Vermont to the east. The state has a maritime border in the Atlantic Ocean with Rhode Island, east of Long Island, as well as an international border with the Canadian provinces of Quebec to the north and Ontario to the west and north. The state of New York, with an estimated 19.8 million residents in 2015, is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City, the state's most populous city and its economic hub.
With an estimated population of nearly 8.5 million in 2014, New York City is the most populous city in the United States and the premier gateway for legal immigration to the United States. The New York City Metropolitan Area is one of the most populous urban agglomerations in the world. New York City is a global city, exerting a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment, its fast pace defining the term New York minute. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York City is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural and financial capital of the world, as well as the world's most economically powerful city. New York City makes up over 40% of the population of New York State. Two-thirds of the state's population lives in the New York City Metropolitan Area, and nearly 40% live on Long Island. Both the state and New York City were named for the 17th century Duke of York, future King James II of England. The next four most populous cities in the state are Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, and Syracuse, while the state capital is Albany.

The Williamsburg Bridge is one of three suspension bridges crossing the lower East River within a mile of each other. It has always been overshadowed by its more famous and attractive neighbors, but also was the world's longest suspension bridge for over 20 years. The bridge has been in service since 1903. We climbed Williamsburg Bridge in NYC. This was extremely dangerous, especially given the icy conditions. In the past people have been arrested for attempting this. I would not recommend it unless you plan and are willing to go on a risky adventure. Also, the half emptied alcohol bottles point to homeless people making this their home. Still, the rewarding adrenaline rush and view of Manhattan were well worth it. Be safe out there, and have a good time. I was living in NYC. I actually worked at a law firm on the 56th floor of WTC 1 until a few weeks before the attack... It was so surreal to see what had become of the towers. I used to just sit outside for lunch and look up at them, they were so amazing. I am still kind of in shock. The diversity of the people crossing the bridge and how they all have the same expression is what makes this video really interesting to me. I actually found this tape stored away and I hadn't ever really watched it. For some reason I felt like it yesterday, and I decided to put it up after watching it. It made me feel better about the world for some reason, instead of the opposite, which I was wasn't expecting. I didn't remember how nice the weather was that day, or seeing the pigeons being flown.
hey guys, so i finally did something i've always wanted to do. Im sorry if its dark, its the only way you can get up here. i had to leave at 1:30 in the morning and climb the bridge by 2 because i cant get seen. other than that, if you're willing to do this you're gonna have to climb on the bridge beams. it was hella fun but dangerous. thanks for watching ya'll! follow me on instagram @whatisliam

Engineering Structures | Bridges of New York | Geographic TV. New York City is home to over 2,000 bridges and tunnels. Several agencies manage this network of crossings, including the New York City Department of Transportation, Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, New York State Department of Transportation and Amtrak. Many of the city's major bridges and tunnels have broken or set records. The Holland Tunnel was the world's first vehicular tunnel when it opened in 1927. The Brooklyn Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge, George Washington Bridge, and Verrazano–Narrows Bridge were the world's longest suspension bridges when opened in 1883,[1] 1903,[2] 1931,[3] and 1964[4] respectively. One of my favourite things about NYC are the old historic bridges. I love how the city has made these bridges accessible to cyclists. In this video I give a tour of the 3 bridges which connect the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn across the East River. My starting point was New York City Hall, and I ended the video at Continental Army Plaza in Brooklyn. Biking the Hudson River Greenway: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCAUo0ye2yM Tacoma Narrows Bridge: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFzu6CNtqec I used my Contour Roam 2 camera to shoot the action footage and recorded the audio with my Panasonic voice recorder and earpiece microphone. New York City is a great bicycling city! I encourage you to explore the city on a bike if you ever visit. Please leave a comment and SUBSCRIBE. Thanks ...
Sunday, March 12th, 2017 - Drove from midtown Manhattan down to Chambers st. and headed east towards Chinatown/Little Italy. Took Delancey St, crossing the Williamsburg bridge to Brooklyn. Drove around Williamsburg for a bit and up Bedford ave before heading back to Manhattan and up to Hells Kitchen. Minor traffic around Delancey St, gas is about 60 cents cheaper in Brooklyn compared with Manhattan, but uneventful drive.
