Museum of Arts and Design
The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD), based in Manhattan, New York City, collects, displays, and interprets objects that document contemporary and historic innovation in craft, art, and design. In its exhibitions and educational programs, the Museum celebrates the creative process through which materials are crafted into works that enhance contemporary life.
History
The Museum first opened its doors in 1956 as the Museum of Contemporary Crafts, with an original mission of recognizing the craftsmanship of contemporary American artists. Nurtured by the vision of philanthropist and craft patron Aileen Osborn Webb, the Museum mounted exhibitions that focused on the materials and techniques associated with craft disciplines. From its earliest years, the Museum celebrated the changing roles of craftsmanship in society, served as an important advocate for emerging artists, and linked art to industry.
From 1963 to 1987, under the directorship of Paul J. Smith, the Museum presented dynamic and often participatory exhibitions that reflected the social currents of the era and broke down hierarchies in the arts with the celebration of popular culture and mundane materials. In 1979, the Museum reopened as the American Craft Museum in an expanded location at 44 West 53rd Street. To accommodate its ever- growing programming, the Museum relocated again in 1986 to its 18,000-square-foot home at 40 West 53rd Street, where it would remain until 2008.

Santa Lucia is an urban park smack dab in the middle of Santiago and it’s a popular hangout in the afternoons and weekends. The hike is a pleasant one with lots to see, including fountains, spiralling staircases, defensive forts, sprawling gardens, and cool lookout points.
Lastarria is a neighbourhood located just east of Santa Lucia hill and it was once the bohemian hub of the city.Today it is very popular with tourists as it offers an outdoors flea market, an international mix of cafes and restaurants, & live music.
For panoramic views of the city, ride the funicular to the top of San Cristobal Hill.
Plaza de Armas is the heart of Santiago’s historic centre. There are lots of benches under the cover of palm trees, and the place is buzzing with activity. The Metropolitan Cathedral is located in the historic centre of Santiago overlooking the square. The construction you see today dates back to the year 1800, since previous cathedrals were destroyed in earthquakes.
Santiago’s Central Market is the place to come for the freshest food. You'll find rows of restaurants serving up everything from grilled fish to ceviche. We really like our ceviche, so we found a place serving exactly that.
Parque Forestal is a park that forms a long stretch of greenery along the Mapocho River. It’s a nice green escape in the middle of the city.
Palacio de la Moneda is the seat of the President of the Republic of Chile. This is where you can come to watch the changing of the guard. Just underneath Palacio de La Moneda, you’ll find Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda, which is a cultural centre featuring exhibitions, design shops, and a small selection of cafes.
Bellavista is a cultural hub with lots of theatres, cinemas, cafes, museums, and restaurants. The most famed home in the neighbourhood is La Chascona, the home of the famed Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.

Santa Lucia is an urban park smack dab in the middle of Santiago and it’s a popular hangout in the afternoons and weekends. The hike is a pleasant one with lots to see, including fountains, spiralling staircases, defensive forts, sprawling gardens, and cool lookout points.
Lastarria is a neighbourhood located just east of Santa Lucia hill and it was once the bohemian hub of the city.Today it is very popular with tourists as it offers an outdoors flea market, an international mix of cafes and restaurants, & live music.
For panoramic views of the city, ride the funicular to the top of San Cristobal Hill.
Plaza de Armas is the heart of Santiago’s historic centre. There are lots of benches under the cover of palm trees, and the place is buzzing with activity. The Metropolitan Cathedral is located in the historic centre of Santiago overlooking the square. The construction you see today dates back to the year 1800, since previous cathedrals were destroyed in earthquakes.
Santiago’s Central Market is the place to come for the freshest food. You'll find rows of restaurants serving up everything from grilled fish to ceviche. We really like our ceviche, so we found a place serving exactly that.
Parque Forestal is a park that forms a long stretch of greenery along the Mapocho River. It’s a nice green escape in the middle of the city.
Palacio de la Moneda is the seat of the President of the Republic of Chile. This is where you can come to watch the changing of the guard. Just underneath Palacio de La Moneda, you’ll find Centro Cultural Palacio La Moneda, which is a cultural centre featuring exhibitions, design shops, and a small selection of cafes.
Bellavista is a cultural hub with lots of theatres, cinemas, cafes, museums, and restaurants. The most famed home in the neighbourhood is La Chascona, the home of the famed Chilean poet Pablo Neruda.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art is among the largest art museums in the United States. It has collections of more than 227,000 objects that include "world-class ...
The Philadelphia Museum of Art is among the largest art museums in the United States. It has collections of more than 227,000 objects that include "world-class holdings of European and American paintings, prints, drawings and decorative arts." The Main Building is visited by more than 800,000 people annually, and is located at the west end of Philadelphia's Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Other museum sites include the Rodin Museum, also located on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway; the Ruth and Raymond G. Perelman Building, across the street from the Main Building; and historic houses in Fairmount Park. The Perelman Building opened in 2007, and houses some of the more popular collections, as well as the Museum's library, with over 200,000 books and periodicals, and 1.6 million other documents. The museum is closed on Mondays, and the basic entrance price is $20, with various concessions. The museum holds a total of about 25 special exhibitions every year, including touring exhibitions arranged with other museums in the United States and abroad. Some have an extra charge for entrance. The City Council of Philadelphia funded a competition in 1895 to design a new museum building,[9] but it was not until 1907 that plans were first made to construct it on Fairmount, a rocky hill topped by the city's main reservoir. The Fairmount Parkway (renamed Benjamin Franklin Parkway), a grand boulevard that cut diagonally across the grid of city streets, was designed to terminate at the foot of the hill. But there were conflicting views about whether to erect a single museum building, or a number of buildings to house individual collections. The architectural firms of Horace Trumbauer and Zantzinger, Borie and Medary collaborated for more than a decade to resolve these issues. The final design is mostly credited to two architects in Trumbauer's firm: Howell Lewis Shay for the building's plan and massing, and Julian Abele for the detail work and perspective drawings. Construction of the Main Building began in 1919, when Mayor Thomas B. Smith laid the cornerstone in a Masonic ceremony. Because of shortages caused by World War I and other delays, the new building was not completed until 1928. The facade and columns are made of Minnesota dolomite. The building's eight pediments were intended to be adorned with sculpture groups. The only pediment that has been completed, "Western Civilization" (1933) by C. Paul Jennewein, features his polychrome sculptures of painted terra-cotta figures, depicting Greek deities and mythological figures. It was completed in 1933 and garnered much praise when it was unveiled. The building is also adorned by a collection of bronze griffins, which were adopted as the symbol of the museum in the 1970s. The Main Building was once derided as the "Great Greek garage," but now is fondly nicknamed the "Parthenon on the Parkway." The Museum houses more than 227,000 objects showing the creative achievements of the Western world since the first century CE and those of Asia since the third millennium BCE Though the Museum houses over 200 galleries spanning 2,000 years, it does not have any galleries devoted to Egyptian, Roman, or Pre-Columbian art. This is because a partnership between the Museum and the University of Pennsylvania had been enacted early in the Museum's history. The University loaned the Museum its collection of Chinese porcelain, and the Museum loaned a majority of its Roman, Pre-Columbian, and Egyptian pieces to the University. However, the Museum keeps a few important pieces for special exhibitions. Highlights of the Asian collections include paintings and sculpture from China, Japan, and India; furniture and decorative arts, including major collections of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean ceramics; a large and distinguished group of Persian and Turkish carpets; and rare and authentic architectural assemblages such as a Chinese palace hall, a Japanese teahouse, and a sixteenth-century Indian temple hall. In the heart of Basel, the city where Art Basel was founded by Basel Gallerist Ernst Beyeler, Mixed Art Basel showcases innovative new art in an elegant, gallery-style exhibition space of Art Basel Center, Hall 33.
There are several factors to make the 7th edition of Mixed Art Basel at Basel Art Center a key destination for contemporary art. These factors include Basel’s increasingly vibrant art scene and the well-established museums such as Foundation Beyeler, Art Museum Tinguely, Art Museum Basel and Vitra Design Museum.
The juried, contemporary charity art event, organized by Gallery Director and Chiefcurator Priska Medam, is featuring an international slate of artists – among them Beat Baumann, Hildegard Binkert-Vögeli, Oliver Fauser, Niklaus Fichtel, Cornelia Fischer, Laurence Gartel, Bruno Graf, Susann Graf, Stephan Korianski, Makeski Art, Markus Mesmer, Achilles Urs Widmer and YanYan.
Visitors can expect a wide range of cultural events such as the curated group show, the Live music solo concerts by Mario Stracuzzi (guitar) and special guest Laurence Gartel, the pioneer of the Digital Art Movement.
Born and raised in New York City, Laurence Gartel was working together with Andy Warhol and Keith Haring. Gartel earned his BFA degree in Visual Arts at the New York Arts School. The artist, who is considered the father of the Paintbox Era in 1986, continued his digital arts electronic career realizing projects with Nam June Paik at Media Study/Buffalo. His work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, Joan Whitney Payson Museum, Long Beach Museum of Art, Princeton Art Museum, among others.
The 7th Mixed Art charity art exhibition opens on Thursday, December, 1, at 6.00 pm. A part of the proceeds of sold artworks will be donated to the Non-Profit Artists’ Association Künstlerkollekte. The Organization, established in 2016, is committed to support emerging young and mid-career artists. Don’t miss the Pioneers of Pop.

About Marshall McLuhan:
Marshall McLuhan (1911-1980) was the first major communications theorist of how the new media have the power to transform human nature. No matter how powerful or persuasive the message, he said, it’s the media that have changed our patterns of thought and behaviour. Now, in a world dominated by the Internet and social media, McLuhan’s revolutionary ideas are as hotly debated as they were in the 1960s, when he became an academic star known worldwide for his catchy slogans “the medium is the message,” “the global village,” and “hot and cool media.” Today, McLuhan is back in the spotlight again, this time as the first seer of cyberspace. For decades scholars and students have read Marshall McLuhan’s landmark books Understanding Media and the Gutenberg Galaxy, recognizing him as the foremost theorist of how the new media have affected human behaviour.

"Americans call the Second World War 'The Good War.' But before it even began, America's wartime ally Josef Stalin had killed millions of his own citizens--and kept killing them during and after the war. Before Hitler was finally defeated, he had murdered six million Jews and nearly as many other Europeans. At war's end, both the German and the Soviet killing sites fell behind the iron curtain, leaving the history of mass killing in darkness.
Bloodlands is a new kind of European history, presenting the mass murders committed by the Nazi and Stalinist regimes as two aspects of a single history, in the time and place where they occurred: between Germany and Russia, when Hitler and Stalin both held power."
