Flight Testing the Gemini Version 2 High Altitude Long Duration FPV/UAV:
Climbed very slowly to altitude, keeping a reserve in the battery. Then Descended in a shallow dive, bleeding off altitude.
The total time for the flight was 2 hrs, and 2 minutes. Maximum altitude reached was 4008 meters or 13,159.6 ft. That's very nearly 2 1/2 miles high! Part of the flight was in instrument conditions, and the plane was flown manually without an autopilot. 6 cameras were on board for the flight.
1-Pilot's FPV camera with pan tilt servos
2-Observer camera (Dad cam)with pan tilt servos
3-GoPro hero 3+ mounted externally under the nose
4-GoPro hero 2 set to take video in mapping tray compartment.
5-GoPro hero 2 set to take stills(over 700) also in mapping tray
6-Mobius mounted externally to top of horizontal tail (used external power supply)
The GoPro 2 set to take video in the mapping tray shut off due to low battery most of the way throughout the flight. The flight was made below gross weight, and the altitude was achieved at a very low rate of climb, while simultaneously achieving a fairly long duration flight, so it's clear that much more altitude is possible. This entire flight was made with the Immersionrc control system Tx on low power.

I found this old video on my computer. It's the first flight in my Airbike after building it in my basement.
I had finished up the paperwork with the FAA earlier that week and received my tailwheel endorsement that afternoon. The weather was perfect and there was nothing left to do but go fly. The monthly EAA chapter meeting happened to be that night, so I ended up with a few extra helpers and a bit of a crowd.
The flight went well, even though my nerves were tested a bit.The guy pulling the starter rope is Wally. He was my SEL power instructor in C-150s. The man shaking my hand at the end is Laird, who was one of the two glider instructors that first taught me to fly.
Except for my first solo in a glider, few have been as memorable as this first flight in an airplane I built myself. It was an excellent day all around.

A few folks have asked why its called an Airbike. It has nothing to do with bicycles, exercise machines or anime vehicles. It simply because your feet are on the outside similar to a motorcycle. The seat is also narrow like a motorcycle. The company that sold the kits picked the name almost 20 years ago. That's all there is to it. Sorry if you were expecting something else.

Soaring is the process of collecting energy from the wind during flight with an aerial platform. Animal studies have demonstrated that large birds can significantly extend their flight duration by soaring in favourable wind conditions. Since most UAVs have their flight duration limited by some form of internal energy storage for propulsion (batteries or fuel), autonomous soaring provides a unique opportunity to extend flight duration without modifying payload. This talk will present work performed at the University of Sydney towards understanding soaring and developing autonomous soaring algorithms. We will present some basic reactive strategies for dynamic soaring and attempt to approach the more complex problem of simultaneously exploring (mapping) and exploiting (soaring) in unknown wind fields. We will explore Gaussian Process-based mapping along with simple mode-switching and more advanced reinforcement learning soaring approaches. We will also discuss higher-level mission planning approaches using Monte Carlo Tree Search for thermal soaring exploration problems.

Onboard another EasyJet adventure, this time only domestic, on one of only a handful summer specials between Liverpool and Newquay. The flight busier than I was expecting with 117 passengers onboard. A lovely day for flying, pretty much clear skies the entire journey. Slightly delayed departure from Liverpool due to the aircraft getting held up at Amsterdam on its previous flight, you can hear the captain explain that. Nice views over central Wales and the west country before starting our descent down the west of Devon & Cornwall and turning over the Atlantic for arrival on RWY12 at Newquay, St. Mawgan airport, which meant some beautiful beach views during our last few moments in the air!

Flight length
In aviation, the flight length is defined as the time airborne during a flight. There are four categories, short-haul, medium-haul, long-haul and ultra long-haul.
Distinctions
Absolute distance versus flight length
A flight is typically planned to follow a direct route wherever possible to minimise flight length. For long-haul flights, the most direct route follows a great circle along the diameter of the Earth. For example, aircraft travelling westward between continents in the northern hemisphere often follow paths extending northward near or into the Arctic region. When shown on a conventional projection of a world map, the resulting route looks curved and appears longer than it really is. The great-circle distance between airports may therefore give a better indication of the shortest flight length.
However, a flight route must also take into account weather conditions, air currents, and fuel economy. A long-haul flight in an easterly direction often takes a longer more southerly route than the great circle in order to take advantage of the jet stream, a high-altitude wind that can allow an aircraft to cover a longer absolute distance using less fuel than on a more direct route.

The GoPro 2 set to take video in the mapping tray shut off due to low battery most of the way throughout the flight. The flight was made below gross weight, and the altitude was achieved at a very low rate of climb, while simultaneously achieving a fairly long duration flight, so it's clear that much more altitude is possible. This entire flight was made with the Immersionrc control system Tx on low power.

Flight Testing the Gemini Version 2 High Altitude Long Duration FPV/UAV:
Climbed very slowly to altitude, keeping a reserve in the battery. Then Descended in a shallow dive, bleeding off altitude.
The total time for the flight was 2 hrs, and 2 minutes. Maximum altitude reached was 4008 meters or 13,159.6 ft. That's very nearly 2 1/2 miles high! Part of the flight was in instrument conditions, and the plane was flown manually without an autopilot. 6 cameras were on board for the flight.

I found this old video on my computer. It's the first flight in my Airbike after building it in my basement.
I had finished up the paperwork with the FAA earlier that week and received my tailwheel endorsement that afternoon. The weather was perfect and there was nothing left to do but go fly. The monthly EAA chapter meeting happened to be that night, so I ended up with a few extra helpers and a bit of a crowd.
The flight went well, even though my nerves were tested a bit.The guy pulling the starter rope is Wally. He was my SEL power instructor in C-150s. The man shaking my hand at the end is Laird, who was one of the two glider instructors that first taught me to fly.
Except for my first solo in a glider, few have been as memorable as this first flight in an airplane I built myself. It was an excellent day all around.

A few folks have asked why its called an Airbike. It has nothing to do with bicycles, exercise machines or anime vehicles. It simply because your feet are on the outside similar to a motorcycle. Soaring is the process of collecting energy from the wind during flight with an aerial platform. Animal studies have demonstrated that large birds can significantly extend their flight duration by soaring in favourable wind conditions. Since most UAVs have their flight duration limited by some form of internal energy storage for propulsion (batteries or fuel), autonomous soaring provides a unique opportunity to extend flight duration without modifying payload. This talk will present work performed at the University of Sydney towards understanding soaring and developing autonomous soaring algorithms. We will present some basic reactive strategies for dynamic soaring and attempt to approach the more complex problem of simultaneously exploring (mapping) and exploiting (soaring) in unknown wind fields. We will explore Gaussian Process-based mapping along with simple mode-switching and more advanced reinforcement learning soaring approaches. We will also discuss higher-level mission planning approaches using Monte Carlo Tree Search for thermal soaring exploration problems.

Onboard another EasyJet adventure, this time only domestic, on one of only a handful summer specials between Liverpool and Newquay. The flight busier than I was expecting with 117 passengers onboard. A lovely day for flying, pretty much clear skies the entire journey. Slightly delayed departure from Liverpool due to the aircraft getting held up at Amsterdam on its previous flight, you can hear the captain explain that. Nice views over central Wales and the west country before starting our descent down the west of Devon & Cornwall and turning over the Atlantic for arrival on RWY12 at Newquay, St. Mawgan airport, which meant some beautiful beach views during our last few moments in the air!

Due to some unknown reason the plane was almost empty with a payload of only 20-30% (estimated). Less passengers means better service with Emirates. Both food choices were still available and I had a lot of privacy and space. On-board my first ever Delta Air Lines flight for a cross country jump from New York on the Atlantic coast down to Los Angeles on the Pacific coast. Very nice flight, a fair few empty seats around me so enjoyed a free seat next to me and lots of room to spread out. Strange flight in the sense that although it was a daytime flight during the cruise all the lights were switched off and many had their window blinds closed and were sleeping. So the cabin was very quiet and pitch black for much of the flight. Entertainment system was very good. My one complaint would be the on-board service. A 6 hour flight and you only get a couple of biscuits or pretzels and a few free drinks. No meal or anything...

Must admit I was rather hoping for one of the new Thomas Cook A321's with the sharklets but was quite pleased to see I would be travelling on the "Egypt, Where it all begins" aircraft. Very busy flight, not many if any empty seats about, lots of families and couples off for a week or two break. We pushed back bang on time, but a long taxi right up to runway 08R meant we weren't airborne until getting on for 6:20. The lighting during take off was just perfect! Couldn't ask for any more, engine was lit up perfectly and with the damp morning moisture still lingering in the air there's some fantastic displays of water vapour forming in the engine and over the wing! Fairly quiet flight once airborne, most people fell asleep missing the stunning views over Europe.

A long over due trip back to Kefalonia! It had been a few years since I'd been back to visit my family. So after finding cheap flights with Thomas Cook just 2 weeks before the departure date I thought why not and booked it up! On-board my first ever Delta Air Lines flight for a cross country jump from New York on the Atlantic coast down to Los Angeles on the Pacific coast. Very nice flight, a fair few empty seats around me so enjoyed a free seat next to me and lots of room to spread out. Strange flight in the sense that although it was a daytime flight during the cruise all the lights were switched off and many had their window blinds closed and were sleeping. So the cabin was very quiet and pitch black for much of the flight. Entertainment system was very good. My one complaint would be the on-board service. A 6 hour flight and you only get a couple of biscuits or pretzels and a few free drinks. No meal or anything. Then when I went to purchase something from the menu they didn't take cash payments at all and I'd got the exact change. Was rather disappointed and arrived in California starving!
None the less a beautiful aircraft, great seat, entertainment and plenty of legroom and space on-board!

Welcome to the first Super SpotterATL Trip Report Production! I have been wanting to do this for a while now and will most likely start this with all of my future videos I make in the future. I am open to criticism for future improvements. This is my first time flying in First Class so of course I loved it! As you could see the air vent rubber piece came off while I tried to open the vents a little. Seemed very poorly designed and cheap to me compared to all of the other aircraft I've flown on but that's just an nitpick. The overall flight was stellar! Very nice flight attendants and gave great service but didn't serve a before departure beverage. I'll give my ratings below about how everything was in the flight. During the rest of the flight you could see the rain outside when the strobes lit up and we were stuck in it throughout the rest of the flight. I liked the old interior of this plane it had a really look to it. The meal was a steak with salad with noodles. The steak was excellent! Cold, but amazing flavor, texture and moisture! I prefer my meats well done. After the flight I of course, took a trip up to the cockpit and sat next to the captain and had a great chat with him and the first officer! Andrew was the Captain of this flight with FO Jon with him! two awesome guys that really loved their jobs and were great enough to sit down and teach me some cool stuff about the aircraft!
