All 100,000 Chinese characters are merely different combinations of 400 simple pictographs and ideographs (think Egyptian hieroglyphs). In order to rapidly learn Chinese characters and successfully retain them, the secret is to first thoroughly master these 400 basic pictographic components!
Our radical approach ("部首", ha ha) to quickly mastering copious amounts of Chinese characters is this: Learn the basic pictographic components 幺 艹 白 木 before attempting to the learn the Chinese character 藥.

Similarly, in phonetic languages like English you learn the basic phonetic symbols A B C before you learn a complex word like "medicine". Learning Chinese characters is easier than many students realize. The problem is that many students are still studying Chinese characters using out-dated and inefficient methods.
To understand the best way to learn Chinese characters it's useful to understand how they were originally developed.
This video gives a brief explanation of the main ways in which characters have been developed by looking at different character types, including:
- pictographic characters
- indicative and associative characters
- and most importantly, the picto-phonetic characters
Of these, the picto-phonetic method is responsible for 80% of Chinese characters and is the key to learn Chinese characters efficiently.
By studying series of characters that share a common phonetic root students can easily learn 20-30 new characters in a single lesson.

There's a stroke-by-stroke way to write every Chinese character. Here's how I got used to hànzì and kanji stroke orders, and why even then they still threw a few punches.

Forgive the mismatched audio. I rerecorded the intro.
Learning kanji and hànzì means writing the right strokes in the right order. As if there weren't enough to pay attention to...
At first, this seemed like the last straw. The moment I fully realized this was utterly unlike other writing systems.
Fortunately, there were real patterns here! Patterns you can get good mileage out of!
Even then, some characters still threw me for a loop. Like the different stroke orders between China and Japan. Or patterns that worked for one character but shifted when that character was part of a larger character. Or the first time I saw someone write cursive characters.
It's a fun skill.

Ever experienced difficulties in learning Chinese characters? Would you like to memorize them faster and become more efficient at your language studies? Then definitely watch this video about improving your memory by using the most effective tip: Memory Palaces!
In this video, we're going to take a down-to-earth example: family members in Mandarin Chinese. To be more precise: 爷爷 (father's father). By using the ultimate memory technique called Memory Palaces (or Method of Loci), we are able to visualize the character in an extremely vivid manner and "place" it into a real location, hence ensuring that we don't forget the character. I've used this technique for hundreds of characters, and with the right associations, it works like a Swiss clock.
Note: I've started learning Mandarin recently myself, so I am by no means a Chinese speaker. Yet I am willing to develop with you guys, and I hope that this method will prove very useful (it did with every other language I've learnt).

Hiragana, katakana and kanji are the three basic scripts in the Japanese writing system. Everyone plays up the last one, the kanji. Turns out, they weren't kidding. For me, kanji were even harder than I expected. They were actually multiple, embedded systems:
On'yomi ("sound readings") of a character come from the Japanese way of pronouncing the Chinese word for that character when it arrived in Old Japan.
Since there were multiple waves of characters reaching Japan, there are multiple on'yomi! Go-on, kan-on, tou-on (tousou-on) and kan'you-on are the four basic "Sino-Japanese" pronunciations.
Kun'yomi ("meaning readings") come from tying a native Japanese word to the character as yet another way of reading it. Yes, one character can have multiple kun'yomi, too.
There's more! Nanori are Japanese name readings for a character, and I find that they're often drastically different from the other two pronunciations.
Even after you master pronunciation, characters still behave in odd ways. I highlight some of my favorites:
- Ateji are ripped from context and used like syllable "letters", just ignoring their meaning and focusing on their sound. "Sushi" is a common example.
- Kokuji characters were created in Japan following the logic of Chinese characters.
- Shinjitai and Kyuujitai are new and old character forms. A single character can have both. Many old character forms are still well known in Japan. (This isn't the same as Simplified versus Traditional characters in China.)
- Ryakuji are abbreviations. Some are extremely common. Some of them look nothing like their full counterparts.

Chinese characters
Chinese characters are logograms used in the writing of Chinese and some other Asian languages. In Standard Chinese they are called Hanzi (simplified Chinese: 汉字; traditional Chinese: 漢字). They have been adapted to write a number of other languages including: Japanese, where they are known as kanji, Korean, where they are known as hanja, and Vietnamese in a system known as chữ Nôm. Collectively, they are known as CJKV characters. In English, they are sometimes called Han characters. Chinese characters constitute the oldest continuously used system of writing in the world. By virtue of their widespread current use in East Asia, and historic use throughout the Sinosphere, Chinese characters are among the most widely adopted writing systems in the world.

Fortunately, there were real patterns here! Patterns you can get good mileage out of!
Even then, some characters still threw me for a loop. Like the different stroke orders between China and Japan. Or patterns that worked for one character but shifted when that character was part of a larger character. Or the first time I saw someone write cursive characters.
It's a fun skill.

Hiragana, katakana and kanji are the three basic scripts in the Japanese writing system. Everyone plays up the last one, the kanji. Turns out, they weren't kidding. For me, kanji were even harder than I expected. They were actually multiple, embedded systems:
On'yomi ("sound readings") of a character come from the Japanese way of pronouncing the Chinese word for that character when it arrived in Old Japan.
Since there were multiple waves of characters reaching Japan, there are multiple on'yomi! Go-on, kan-on, tou-on (tousou-on) and kan'you-on are the four basic "Sino-Japanese" pronunciations.
Kun'yomi ("meaning readings") come from tying a native Japanese word to the character as yet another way of reading it. Yes, one character can have multiple kun'yomi, too.
There's more! Nanori are Japanese name readings for a character, and I find that they're often drastically different from the other two pronunciations.
Even after you master pronunciation, characters still behave in odd ways. I highlight some of my favorites:
- Ateji are ripped from context and used like syllable "letters", just ignoring their meaning and focusing on their sound. "Sushi" is a common example.
- Kokuji characters were created in Japan following the logic of Chinese characters.
- Shinjitai and Kyuujitai are new and old character forms. A single character can have both. Many old character forms are still well known in Japan. (This isn't the same as Simplified versus Traditional characters in China.)
- Ryakuji are abbreviations. Some are extremely common. Some of them look nothing like their full counterparts.
