North Melbourne and Western Bulldogs to clash in historic Good Friday match

The AFL has made the historic decision to stage a twilight match on Good Friday between North Melbourne and Western Bulldogs.

The league announced it would break with tradition to hold a game on the religious day in Round 4 at Etihad Stadium next year as a way of providing a key fundraising event for the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal.

But the Roos and Bulldogs will not have a permanent hold on Good Friday games

"The AFL acknowledges the requests from a number of clubs to play on Good Friday and we will consider the appropriate match-up and venue on a year-to-year basis," said Travis Auld, AFL general manager of clubs and operations.

Mr Auld said the AFL had scheduled the match to the late afternoon to ensure it did not conflict with major religious services.

"We accept that some football fans remain opposed to scheduling a match on Good Friday," he said.

The AFL Commission decided in 2014 that its executive could schedule a match on the religious holiday, however, it chose not to for the next two seasons.

"The decision to now schedule a match was made on the basis that our society has changed in recent decades and the majority of football fans, who are our ultimate decision-makers, share the view of our clubs who have expressed their wish to play on this day," Mr Auld said.

The full fixture for the 2017 season will be released later this week.
