Come walk around Bongeunsa, a Buddhist temple in the heart of Seoul's Gangnam district!
Marie and I spent a wonderful spring afternoon walking around the famous Bong-eun-sa temple located in the middle of Gangnam district, right across the street from the famous COEX Mall.
This temple was founded in 794 A.D., and has experienced a history of attacks and fires. Most recently, it was almost completely burned down in 1939 and the Korean War, with only 1 building surviving the major fires. Since then, the majority of the complex has been rebuilt and is even undergoing construction projects to this day.
In the middle of busy Gangnam district, one should take a step back into the past by visiting this temple. It's definitely worth it!
This temple also offers a Temple Stay program for visitors.

Hi guys!
We still had a bunch of footage from last week that we couldn’t squeeze into our previous ‘Lunchbox Cafe’ video :D Kyuho and I wanted to check out the newly renovated Coex Mall at Samsung station and do a little window shopping. It may sound strange, but literally right across the street from Coex Mall is a very old, beautiful Buddhist temple that I absolutely love. It’s literally right in the middle of the city, but once you are on the grounds, it’s very quiet and tranquil (aside from the cicadas, haha). I love this place so much because sometimes in the hustle and bustle of a crowded city like Seoul, it can make me feel a little closed in at times. Since this place is so close and you don’t have to travel outside of Seoul to get there, it’s the perfect area for a mini nature getaway ^^
By the way, we LOVED reading everyone's answers about living in the city/nature :D

One of the things I really enjoy about living in Korea, is that because the country is so small, there is always something new to see. In fact, in my almost combined nine months of living in Korea, my time outside the Seoul Metro area has been at a minimum due to the extensive laundry list of places to visit. This past Saturday I was able scratch another on off my long list Bongeunsa Temple (봉은사).
What I find most amazing about this place is that it is located adjacent to the COEX in Seoul. And when I say adjacent, I mean right across the street. You literally can stand at the entrance of the COEX and see the main gate of the temple area. In fact, on this little trip, I had to wait a good five minutes before I made it across the street.
Bongeunsa (봉은사) was founded in 794 during King Wonseongs (원성) reign. Yeonhoe (연호) was the head monk at the time and chose Mount Sudo (수도) its the location.
The grounds themselves are massive with numerous shrines scattered all over the hillside. Anyone is free to enter the grounds and explore. This temple especially caters to foreigners with a unique temple-stay program each week.
Another thing I like about this place was the amazing diversity of views. Standing, facing north, all you can see are the shrines and statues, but make a 180 degree turn and you see something else Seoul (서올). The juxtaposition is really striking.
Panjeon (판전) is the oldest hall with over 3000 wood blocks carved inside with Buddhist scriptures on them. Out of all the shrines on the mountain, this one really blew me away. Its something you have to see for yourself. Behind most of the larger shrines, is a 23 meter high statue of the Maitreya (future Buddha). It was completed in 1996 and is flanked by two lion statutes. The praying large praying area is often full with visitors in the latter part of the day.

Bongeunsa
Bongeunsa is a Buddhist temple located in Samseong-dong, Gangnam-gu in Seoul, South Korea. It was founded in 794 during the reign of King Wonseong by the monk Yeon-hoe (Hangul: 연희), then the highest ranking monk of Silla, and originally named Kyongseoungsa (Hangul: 견성사; hanja: 見性寺). It is located on the slope of Sudo Mountain, across the street from the COEX Mall.
History
During the Joseon Dynasty, Buddhism in Korea was severely repressed. However, Bongeunsa was reconstructed in 1498 under the patronage of a Joseon Queen. With the support of Queen Munjeong, who revived Buddhism in Korea for a short time in the mid-16th century, it became the main temple of the Korean Seon (Zen) sect of Buddhism from 1551 through 1936. Monk Bo-wu was appointed head of the temple in 1548 by Queen Munjeong but was killed soon afterwards as the anti-Buddhist factions regained dominance in Korea towards the end of Queen Munjeong's rule. From 1552-1564 it was the center of the Buddhist National Exam.
A fire in 1939 destroyed most of the buildings, and other parts of the temple were destroyed during the Korean War. Fortunately, one of the very few halls which escaped destruction during the Korean War continues to hold the woodblock carvings of the Flower Garland Sutra, 봉completed in 1855 by monk Young-ki The temple has undergone many repairs and renovations, and is now once again a large, thriving complex. The reconstruction efforts are being waged even today.

One of the things I really enjoy about living in Korea, is that because the country is so small, there is always something new to see. In fact, in my almost combined nine months of living in Korea, my time outside the Seoul Metro area has been at a minimum due to the extensive laundry list of places to visit. This past Saturday I was able scratch another on off my long list Bongeunsa Temple (봉은사). What I find most amazing about this place is that it is located adjacent to the COEX in Seoul. And when I say adjacent, I mean right across the street. You literally can stand at the entrance of the COEX and see the main gate of the temple area. Come walk around Bongeunsa, a Buddhist temple in the heart of Seoul's Gangnam district!
Marie and I spent a wonderful spring afternoon walking around the famous Bong-eun-sa temple located in the middle of Gangnam district, right across the street from the famous COEX Mall.
This temple was founded in 794 A.D., and has experienced a history of attacks and fires. Most recently, it was almost completely burned down in 1939 and the Korean War, with only 1 building surviving the major fires. Since then, the majority of the complex has been rebuilt and is even undergoing construction projects to this day.
In the middle of busy Gangnam district, one should take a step back into the past by visiting this temple. It's definitely worth it!
This temple also offers a Temple Stay program for visitors.

It may sound strange, but literally right across the street from Coex Mall is a very old, beautiful Buddhist temple that I absolutely love. It’s literally right in the middle of the city, but once you are on the grounds, it’s very quiet and tranquil (aside from the cicadas, haha). I love this place so much because sometimes in the hustle and bustle of a crowded city like Seoul, it can make me feel a little closed in at times. Since this place is so close and you don’t have to travel outside of Seoul to get there, it’s the perfect area for a mini nature getaway ^^
By the way, we LOVED reading everyone's answers about living in the city/nature :D

One of the things I really enjoy about living in Korea, is that because the country is so small, there is always something new to see. In fact, in my almost combined nine months of living in Korea, my time outside the Seoul Metro area has been at a minimum due to the extensive laundry list of places to visit. This past Saturday I was able scratch another on off my long list Bongeunsa Temple (봉은사).
What I find most amazing about this place is that it is located adjacent to the COEX in Seoul. And when I say adjacent, I mean right across the street. You literally can stand at the entrance of the COEX and see the main gate of the temple area. In fact, on this little trip, I had to wait a good five minutes before I made it across the street.
Bongeunsa (봉은사) was founded in 794 during King Wonseongs (원성) reign. Yeonhoe (연호) was the head monk at the time and chose Mount Sudo (수도) its the location.
The grounds themselves are massive with numerous shrines scattered all over the hillside. Anyone is free to enter the grounds and explore. This temple especially caters to foreigners with a unique temple-stay program each week.
Another thing I like about this place was the amazing diversity of views. Standing, facing north, all you can see are the shrines and statues, but make a 180 degree turn and you see something else Seoul (서올). The juxtaposition is really striking.
Panjeon (판전) is the oldest hall with over 3000 wood blocks carved inside with Buddhist scriptures on them. Out of all the shrines on the mountain, this one really blew me away. Its something you have to see for yourself. Behind most of the larger shrines, is a 23 meter high statue of the Maitreya (future Buddha). It was completed in 1996 and is flanked by two lion statutes. The praying large praying area is often full with visitors in the latter part of the day.

Bongeunsa Temple is a Buddhist temple that dates back to 794 located south of the Han River and just north of the COEX Mall in Gangnam-gu. It was originally known as Gyeonseongsa when first built. Dominican Seoul | Episode 4 National Museum of Korea & Bongeunsa Temple
I have had a great time the past few weeks. I cannot believe more than a month has passed since I first landed in Seoul. This video took me a bit longer than expected, but I hope you guys can still enjoy it. Also I am having a new found interest in Buddhism. You can tell especially from this video the detail and architecture of Buddhist temples and statues. I hope to discover more temples and statues. The more I come across one the more questions I have about the path that is Buddhism.

In 1902, Bongeunsa Temple was named one of Korea’s 14 major temples; and then, in 1939, the temple was almost completely destroyed by fire. The remaining parts of the temple that weren’t already destroyed at this time were destroyed during the Korean War (1950-53). Ever since then, Bongeunsa Temple has undergone numerous renovations, reconstructions, and growth.
The temple complex is divided in 12 parts:
1 Entrance – Gate of Suchness
2 Statues of the four celestial kings
3 Dharma King pavilion
4 Tangible Cultural Property of Seoul no. 64
5 Main Buddha Hall
6 Hall of Kshtigarbha, protector of the dead
7 Vulture Peak Hall
8 Hall of the Arctic, Hall of the Big Dipper
9 Great Statue of Maitreya Buddha
10 Tangible Property of Seoul No. 83
11 Bell Pavilion
12 Statue of Gwanseum-bosal (Bodhisattva of Compassion) by the water

Once known as Gyeonseongsa Temple, Bongeunsa Temple is located to the north of COEX building, This Buddhist temple was founded in 794 during the Silla (one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea) period. Bongeunsa is widely recognized for it's various propagation efforts and social services. It represents Korea's past 1,200 years of history and tradition.The temple is also a very popular tourist destination, offering various programs relating to traditional Korean Buddhist culture, in a variety of languages.
In 1902, Bongeunsa Temple was named one of Korea’s 14 major temples; and then, in 1939, the temple was almost completely destroyed by fire. The remaining parts of the temple that weren’t already destroyed at this time were destroyed during the Korean War (1950-53). Ever since then, Bongeunsa Temple has undergone numerous renovations, reconstructions, and growth.
The temple complex is divided in 12 parts:

2 Statues of the four celestial kings
3 Dharma King pavilion
4 Tangible Cultural Property of Seoul no. 64
5 Main Buddha Hall
6 Hall of Kshtigarbha, protector of the dead
7 Vulture Peak Hall
8 Hall of the Arctic, Hall of the Big Dipper
9 Great Statue of Maitreya Buddha
10 Tangible Property of Seoul No. 83
11 Bell Pavilion
12 Statue of Gwanseum-bosal (Bodhisattva of Compassion) by the water
