It has been years since the man once known as Tarzan (Skarsgård) left the jungles of Africa behind for a gentrified life as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, with his beloved wife, Jane (Robbie) at his side. Now, he has been invited back to the Congo to serve as a trade emissary of Parliament, unaware that he is a pawn in a deadly convergence of greed and revenge, masterminded by the Belgian, Captain Leon Rom (Waltz). But those behind the murderous plot have no idea what they are about to unleash.

You have to laugh a little at its audaciousness, but it's so completely irony-free that to deride it would only be cheap. Why not just enter its CGI-heavy bubble of wonder?
Richard Brody
The plot of the classic adventure tale has been admirably reconfigured to meet modern sensibilities, but the resulting film is simplistic, condescending, and inert.
Peter Rainer
[Jackson] seems to be in the film mostly to provide some well-needed comic relief.
James Berardinelli
The Legend of Tarzan moves briskly and has the overall feel of one of Burroughs' more entertaining stories come to the screen.
Amy Nicholson
This Tarzan is a corrective, a vengeful Congo Unchained that reteams Jackson and Waltz. Yates mines Zirconium Tarantino, even letting Jackson cackle while blasting a machine gun
David Edelstein
The Legend of Tarzan plays as if a dog ate part of the script.

Why Did the Critics Pan This Picture? A great modern addition to the Tarzan franchise. It has an amazing cast & very solid visual effects. The VFX could've been a little better during the African jungle sequences. Although this jungle pales in comparison to the lush scenery of 2016 The Jungle Book & 2005 King Kong, they make up for it through their photography by using light very effectively to create moody outdoor settings. The only thing I can see tripping up some viewers is the over-reaching engine they use to power the plot. It uses historical & political fiction to cast Tarzan in a role that's somewhat akin to him being a British secret agent saving all of the Congo from Belgium's King Leopold II, and his top geopolitical envoy, the villainous Leon Rom. Leon Rom wants to be appointed Congo's Governor General by Leopold II; intending to hire 20,000 mercenaries as his own private army in order to enforce his rule— paying them with the abundant natural resources he's stripping from the Congo by using slave labor. This is Tarzan's objective: He must rescue his wife, and he must also save an entire nation. It's a little much, I say. Otherwise, I love this movie. Alexander Skarsgaard is a magnificent Tarzan! Loved it.
This movie is incredibly romantic - not just between Tarzan and Jane, but also between man and nature. The story of Tarzan is a difficult piece of literature to adapt to screen, without losing the depth of passion found in Edgar Rice Burroughs' original work... While this movie's plot takes place in time after Tarzan's well-known primary story line, it also features much of the heart of his legendary life. There is so much emotion, so much love and respect preserved in this movie's structure - I couldn't help but to be swept up in it! Alexander Skarsgard does an amazing job portraying John Clayton/Tarzan - I can only imagine the physical demand that must have been required to so masterfully bring this complex character to life! Margot Robbie is also perfect in the role of Jane...she does very well to show the unique and unbreakable bond between her character and that of Tarzan. Christoph Waltz - as always - plays a deliciously despicable villain... and Samuel Jackson adds a little comic relief to the cast. This is a movie well worth adding to my movie collection... It's a classic yet original, it's action-packed, and a deeply moving tale.
I have yet to see this movie, but I jut read another review by someone else and as a fan of the Tarzan story I had to correct something. I don't know how to respond to that person directly so I'll just put it here. Tarzan was not black or native american. You obviously didn't read the original book because then you'd know that Tarzan was an English aristocrat. His parents were John and Alice Clayton (Lord and Lady Greystoke) who were abandoned in the jungle by pirates where they died and Tarzan was adopted by the apes. That's a big part of the story was the fact that these high society people (Jane Porter, her father, etc.) found this wild man in the jungle, but even more so that he was white, obviously of European decent and, by his features, was well bred. That's what made him such an anomaly and his presence in the African jungle such a mystery. As to the people who were saying this isn't like the Disney movie, well I'm pretty sure that's because Disney didn't make this one (Don't quote me I'm not 100% on that). But really if you had seen even one trailer for this movie you should have gotten the jist of what it was about. I'm sure I'll have an actual review once I watch it.
good movie. more african romanticism. they really didn't challenge themselves to re-write the stereotype we have seen since blood diamond: the natives are in trouble and need foreigners to help them save themselves and the animals are so sick of the natives complicity with exploiting the land that they band together with the foreign saviors .... because really they could not do it on their own, right? besides the heavily western-european slant, the movie is decent. decent. at least it brings some of the issues to light (poaching, exploitation of resources, environmental degradation). ironically set many years ago, but typical of what is happening today in the DRC.
What a delightful surprise! I really liked this movie, but know this about me: I am not a Tarzan fan, I did not know the lead actor (I knew the female from Wolf of WS), and I did not expect much from this film. However, the lead kills it, I am a fan of his work now. The story moves along well, Waltz is a superb villian, and the animal effect seemed as good as Avatar to me. The only part that felt out of place was SLJ's character, but I am a huge fan of his so I was able to accept his role in this film. The way they told this story, which we have all heard a thousand times, was unique and a fresh take on something we all know. I am glad they don;t have Tarzan actually talking to the animals, he is more like Steve Irwin in that he knows their habits and behaviors. I did not expect this movie to be this good, and I know it was because I watched it 2x the day I rented it, which is a sign I really like a movie. Enjoy this flick, you will be surprised how well it is. -David
I did watch the movie BUT... Be nice to each other! I mean DAAYYYUUMM! LOOK: Angelina Jolie can play Fox from Wanted; Samuel L. Jackson can play Nick Fury; Johnny Depp can play Tanto; Michael Clark Duncan (rip) can play Kingpin... There's even movie where people paint there faces. EXAMPLE: Robert Downing, Jr. In Tropic Thunder or Eddie Griffin in Deuce Bigelow. IT'S JUST A MOVIE, apparently I watch way to many cuz I'm a nerd. Bet my GF is hotter than yours though. BE HAPPY
Eh Me and my mom went to see the movie and she was very disappointed that it showed Tarzan as A socialite instead of a wild man in the beginning. She also thought that it would show Tarzans journey to earning the name Tarzan in the first place. She thought it would be a movie about him in childhood all through the life phase but it was ok in my opinion
Nothing like the orginal animation I grew up watching the orginal Disney animation. I loved that movie I watched it so many times. Then I saw this movie nothing like the orginal Disney movie. I was confused like the whole movie the part I did watch. Halfway through the movie I shut it off I was bored. I was really disappointed I thought it would be like Cinderella or something... in that movie they actually followed the animation. Just overall I was disappointed. Maybe it was my fault for not reading about it instead of buying it.
Sorry excuse for a movie This movie was slow boring no kind of action scenes and nothing like the cartoon. The movie was all over the place and the movie started off dumb. I thought they was going to stick to the original movie like they did with the jungle book, but unfortunately they did not , so there for I was not impressed.
Nice take on 100 year old novel This movie is loosely based on a novel that was released in 1912. So Disney are the "bastards" who bastardized a wonderful novel. And the racists are the people who see everything from a racial perspective. Much like a thief who believes he will be robbed by the people around him. If you have hatred in your heart, people will sense it on you and give it back to you. If you give off a positive vibe, that's what will come back to you. Try it...you like it.
Cry babies Cry me a river black people,, giving this movie a low rating. Reality check, no one wants to see a black Tarzan swinging from trees because there's nothing special about that.... It's normal looking... But a white man doing IT is special.
Whites can swing from trees!!! Mofo Kierra Davis such my balls you halfwit. Is a native American black??????? Hell no i should know bc im 1/4 Cherokee and my great grandmother was full blooded Cherokee and I don't believe or ever will have black blood in our veins. So you ignorant slime, shut the _____ up!! Your nothing but a dam racist!!!!
Sexiest Tarzan ever. I gave this movie 4 stars only because I wish they told more about the love story of "Me Tarzan you Jane" in the flashbacks. Hopefully they will rush to do a prequel. As a fan of True Blood I was delighted to see Erik Northman as Tarzan and absolutely astounded at his gorgeous transformation with his body. A great movie for anyone over 13. Very little bad language and no nudity (personally disappointed). Please please a prequel for one of the best literary love stories. Kierra Davis please read the original
Awesome movie! Love!! First...I think that technology has made us spell-lazy! Lol. Some of the reviews were painful to read.... However, the movie was great! I saw it 3 times in the theater and will buy it in digital format soon. I enjoyed seeing a different take on the story other than the same one over and over again. Alexander played his character wonderfully. I'm not being bias even though I am a True Blood fan, the movie as a whole was in my opinion the best adaption of the Tarzan character that I have seen. Thumbs up
Duh People are complaining that it's nothing like the original and it wasn't what they were expecting. PEOPLE. Read the description of a movie before you go see it. This is the story of what happened AFTER he left the jungle to be with Jane. Don't give the movie a bad review just because you didn't know what you were getting into. This was a great movie, Alexander Skarsgard did a wonderful job of filling the role of a childhood idol.
Great film This was a great adaptation geared for an older audience, definitely not for young children. No musical scores or talking animals dancing and singing. This is a serious look into the life of a boy raised in the wild until adulthood, where he has had to make tough decisions. I loved this movie albeit it is another great white hope storyline (which has always been the Tarzan theme, so why all the hate?).
White man swinging in the jungle, wtf?? Firstly, Tarzan was of NATIVE AMERICAN tribes!! He had thick luxurious hair like wool lol the illusion of this gov keeps stripping us away from our blackness because WE are the most powerful on this place called earth. I haven't even seen the movie and I will not. Because I don't like how the white man has to deprive US blacks and NATIVE Americans of our true selves and heritage. I bet this movie does suck. Lol nice try tho😂✊✨
Entertaining. For those who think of the Disney version of Tarzan as the " Original story " and were disappointed in this version. I just don't have the words. All I can say is your exceedingly ignorant of the actual Tarzan story. Hate to burst your delusional little bubbles but the Disney version was far, and I mean far, from the original story. This version was also a bit different but well done and very entertaining. Not a block buster like Avatar but still a very well made movie and as I said very entertaining.
What a great movie, this.version of Tarzan is awesome. Totally a 5-star entertaining show. Creator Edgar Rice Burroughs would have loved it, exciting, sassy, stunning, and intriguing characters, both men and "beasts." Great actors, just the right notes of serious, action, and fantasy.Totally disagree with reviews that say the movie doesn't add anything new to the Tarzan legacy. And really, critics need context, Tarzan was created by a fantasy writer born right after the American Civil War, at the height of anglo-euro colonialism. How do you keep race out of a movie set in Africa in the 1890s?
I love the flashbacks through Tarzan and Jane's eyes as they revisit their home after being away for 8 years. I love the flashbacks because they touch on key parts of the Tarzan movies of old and replay only the key parts through the their memories. This movie added a new chapter with a couple new twists that made this movie great. GREAT JOB!!! Hollywood, when are we going to make a movie about Kratos and the God of War story line? Bill Goldberg would have been a great Kratos. 😊. LOL!!!
Total Snoozefest I was really disappointed in this movie. I convinced my family to watch it and we had to stop it mid movie. Sure a few of the scenes were cool, but the other 96% of the movie was bad. I wasn't sure what was happening and it felt like I was watching Down Town Abbey or something with a similar tone. If you are hoping this movie will bring back your love of Tarzan, please don't watch it. Find a better written movie like Ant Man Joe Dirt.
*Slight spoiler alert* I thought this was a wonderful movie. Growing up on Tarzan I thought the movie did a great job of not trying to stick to the TV series or reinvent the story. Instead it picks up a little in the future and does a great job of telling important pieces of the past while moving forward to tell a new story. I only wished for two things; 1. The call of Tarzan was a little more like the one from the TV show and 2. I wish they would have added in a scene where Tarzan called to the animals using "Ungawa." Rent or Buy it now. It's that good.
The Legend Of Tarzan Thank you for the opportunity to occasionally rent, tho now I prefer to wait and but my favorite movies, between upgrading to the Samsung Galaxy 7, & the Galaxy 5 Tablet 10.5" on these and my Roku 4 good wifi speed and T-Mobile set, full unlimited 4Glte, they play and sound beautiful!! The special offers, and coupons have helped me put quite a collection of movies, now TV with binge watch I'm adding to that too* Google Rocks
Nope Couldn't make it through the movie. This is not a good Tarzan remake. Your typical white people save the world movie, Save your money. Margot robbie gets 5 stars though. She always gets five stars. And so does christopher waltz.
Ummm it could of been better😑😑 Ok first i will like to say great action type movie the whole story behind this movie of Tarzan was just bogus! There was no africans in the original Tarzan and the father got killed by the cheetah not the gorilla! They really messed up this movie! Thank god I rented this movie! Samuel Jackson was a funny actor in this movie! Everyone else was just horrible!🙄🙄
Good movie, entertaining and nothing to take seriously. For those of you uneducated in the story, Tarzan (which actually means "white skin" in the story) was a white boy, an English aristocrat, Viscount Greystoke. It pays to have your facts correct before giving reviews. Otherwise you just sound ignorant. Just sayin
Wonderful movie I am so glad they did not Disney this film. Disney has the bait of taking great literature and folk lore and spinning them with falsehoods for children to swallow. In and of it's self not that terrible right? But now people expected this to be "appropriate" for children when it's obviously rated a little higher with a PG-13. I love that they timelined this movie to not be the same rehashed, Me Tarzan, you Jane Startup. It was clever and had a sense of realism. Wonderfully done..
Have not seen it yet IF I READ ONE MORE REVIEW REFERRING TO THE DISNEY CARTOON, WITH ROSIE O'DONNELL AS THE VOICE OF AN APE, BEING THE ORIGINAL, IM GONNA LOSE MY SH**! THAT IS NOT THE ORIGINAL YOU IGNORANT WASTES OF SPACE. THIS IS WHERE GEORGE BERNARD SHAW WAS SPOT ON! THESE A**HATS ARE NEXT IN LINE TO RUN THE WORLD???
WHY? CAN SOME ONE TELL ME WHY EVERY SINGLE HOLLYWOOD MOVIE HAS SOME KIND OF ANTI CHRISTIAN ATTACK IN IT??? Of course if you ARE NOT a christian you wont see it. So let me point it out to you. THE BAD GUY IN THIS MOVIE CARRIES WITH HIM A CROSS CHAIN AS A WEAPON. AN IT WAS IMPLIED HE WAS MOLESTED BY A PREIST. The Bad guy is a Christian...an evil catholic christian. So many people fooled an BRAINWASHED BY SATAN HOLLYWOOD. THERE IS AN ATTACK ON CHRISTIANS. WAKE UP...THE BIBLE IS REAL. AN SO IS SATAN. ONLY JESUS CAN SAVE US.
To...Kierra Davis' comment If you've EVER seen any Tarzan movie, whether if its cartoons or not, you'd know that Tarzan is not black or from a Native American tribe. Your post is hilarious. I had fun reading it due to the utter stupidity of it.
Tarzan Loved this movie, had great scenes and effects in it. Show's how he gained respect from the animals and tribes, his life from a child to going back to grey stoke life in england and back to save his jungle land and tell the other tribe that the diamonds were all that the greedy people wanted from them, and afterwards they would take their lands. I loved it as a woman, because he was a very sexy man too!
Not impressed The story line of this film and so many moments throughout the movie were so unbelievable and cringeworthy. The two main actors who played Jane and Tarzan certainly looked the part but other than that, I'm annoyed I paid as much as I did for this film.
Very Inapropriate! It had a good story line, but there was foul language in almost every scene and some of the scenes became very sexual. Not reccomended to anyone.
Spare me the liberal hogwash conspicuously tied into the story line. Fail. When hillary becomes a saint I might consider giving this movie 2.5 stars then.
Meh. Seems to have too many gaps for me. I can handle changing things up from the original...but...i feel like this Tarzan is more interested in a cup of tea...than being Tarzan of the jungle. Jane played more of a badass in this movie than Tarzan. Samuel L Jackson...i just couldn't settle into his role at all. I love Sam...but not for this role...at least not for me. Christoph was amazing as usual. I love his acting...he plays a great bad guy.
Nope This movie ruined my child hood. Tarzan is my favorite disney movie. Bastards.
This movie is just as wonderful as Jurassic world! I saw this movie with my mom, & my sister Kendel, & I was holding Kendel's hand through the whole movie. This movie is right up there with Jurassic world because the score by Rupert Gregson-Williams is Thrillingly Awesome! The animals in the movie look so realistic, the romance Is very touching & the bad guys die & best of all: The animal facts from the movie is undoubtedly correct. The audience was laughing at the movie & at the end of the movie the audience were clapping & so are we. GREAT FOR FAMILIES...without kids.
Awesome movie in the world I love this movie so much I cry tears of joy I mean Tarzan risked his life and saved his family and wife if u see Tarzan give me a call lol
Stupid, boring, zzzzzz wake me up when it gets better movie. Dont waste your time or money.
This movie is a waste of time This movie was really stupid. It's far away from the main point of Tarzan, and no offense, but they should keep all the racial crap out of the movie. Also they make you hate the gorillas. I'm giving it 1 star. We hated it.
