It's funny, and nuanced in its funniness: hehs to haaaaaaas to lols.
Anthony Lane
So, how do the Ghostbusters of today shape up against the boys of yesteryear? Pretty well ...
James Berardinelli
This is a mediocre horror/comedy that deserves neither high praise nor disparagement.
Peter Rainer
As is so often the case with special-effects-heavy movies, the character comedy quickly gets trampled by the effects (in this case, not special).
Andrew Lapin
In her wily line delivery and cocksure swagger, McKinnon resembles nothing if not a young Bill Murray. Through her thick goggles is the impish spark that keeps movies like this in orbit.
Dana Stevens
These women are having fun just being together and getting to don matching jumpsuits and whale on undead spirits, and their evident joy makes us happy to hop in the hearse for a ride-along.

How will the reboot be remembered a couple of decades down the line? Not as beloved, or beloathed; more likely as beliked, if it's remembered at all.

Standing on its own, this is a really genuinely funny film that deserves credit for bringing something really fresh to a franchise that had long stagnated due to a wide variety of issues. Was it as good as the original? No, that's lightning in a bottle that nobody is likely going to ever recapture. That said, the characterizations in this film are excellent, and each character holds his or her own place in a completely different way than the original cast of characters. There is no female Venkman, no female Ray, or Egon, or Winston. Each character exists as her own fully realized personality, and Holtzmann in particular is worth the price of admission by herself. If I were judging this film in a vacuum, I'd give it a good four stars, maybe three and three quarters at worst due to a slightly weak third act, a villain that actually would have worked better with fewer appearances and a more mysterious presentation, and a number of moments that just missed the mark by a tiny amount. But, I'm giving it a full five in order to counter the "brigades" of people subjecting it to one star reviews for reasons that are actually unrelated to the quality of the film itself.
To make sure I had a good perspective, I rewatched the first ghostbusters right before seeing this one at the theater. (the second one didn't happen, except for Peter MacNicol of course) This new one held its own just fine. Kate McKinnon and Chris Hemsworth had excellent comedic timing and Kate was better than any character in the original. (and I LOVE me some Bill Murray) There were some bits that could've been improved, but I've yet to see a movie where I don't have a comparable number of similar thoughts. While people are entitled to their opinions of course, as a statistical analyst by trade it's pretty clear from the IMDB ratings that a deliberate effort was made before the movie was released to downvote it and that effort was skewed in a way that does not appear comparable to any other movie I can find (lots of males, and a huge percentage before it was even released). I'd strongly advise taking those ratings with a grain of salt (and if you know somebody who downvoted the movie without seeing it, straighten their butt out, there's no reason for them to be part of the problem)
Movie was great and has a lot of potential if given a chance without negative impact. Never judge a movie based off of anyone else's review. Also, from reading what others have constantly said "negatively" about this film, without giving it a chance, shows what type of state this nation is in. The film was great and I have noticed a lot of individuals are calling the film "terrible" or "sorry" without realizing that some (or one for sure) of THE ORIGINAL GHOSTBUSTERS (Dan Aykroyd) had a main hand in the film as one of the Executive Producers!! But then again, I am not surprised from the sexist and racist comments, seeing as this is a nation that actually has an individual like Donald Trump SERIOUSLY running for the highest office in the land! All 4 of these ladies did a great job and did their absolute best in paying homage to a classic! As for other viewers to this film, keep an open mind! While the film itself had it's ups and downs, All 4 women did their part in keeping this film Fun and Interesting as well as nice on screen chemistry!
Very forgettable. Another in a long line of uninspired reboots/remakes. Its failures had nothing to do with the female cast though. Kate McKinnon saved it from being a complete train wreck. Even though the original was a comedy too, the original treated the premise a bit more seriously and the jokes flowed more naturally. The original was better at pretending that ghosts were real and a bunch of misfit scientists got together to fight and contain them, while at the same time being light and funny. This remake was a caricature. Forced and exaggerated. I kept expecting the cast to turn and wink at the camera every time they over-did a scene.
Pretty mediocre, not bad enough to be trashed the way so many have trashed the movie but also not praise worthy. It has some funny moments but it feels very much like they had an SNL sketch outline for plot and then padded it with a list of beats and shots to run those characters through rather than having a story. The worst part is that given the cast they had it could have been SOO much better than what it is. This isn't McCarthy or Wiigs best work by a long shot. I'm giving it 3 stars because 2 is too harsh but if I could give it 2.5 I would.
Not a Ghostbusters movie at all, it completely ruined the brand. It took the original movies, sprinkled a bit of "equality and radical feminism" dust and called it Ghostbusters. In no way did this improve at all, on any point, other than looking better than the original. It has completely screwed any trust in a future Ghostbusters film for many. Don't trust the other reviews, it may be a new move from the series, but it completely killed it. It didn't deserve the success it had, and the sequel which it will probably get because "its what the public wants". No, its not what the public wants, the public wants good movies that don't pander to radical feminists. Any normal feminist, who by the way, are about equality between genders, not for superiority for women, would probably not like this. The same thing with the black power movement is happening again, this time for women. Its ruining the equality women already have in most first world countries, and making you wonder, what did women do to deserve the radical feminists. Its just a piece of pandering trash that does not deserve any money. Its like all pandering reboots, most of them are trash. And they deserve to be called trash.
I adore this movie wouldn't be surprised if it's considered a cult classic in the future. Definitely worth watching the extended edition if you enjoyed the version played in theatres! It has more character interaction, at least part of the infamous dance scene, and many voice lines and takes that are different than the theater version. It's got a good amount more cursing than the theater cut, which explains why a couple lines (ie "burn in hell") seemed slightly stilted or lengthy (a single f-bomb is a lot more natural sounding). There is some extra plot details, but not so much that I think it's worth getting if that's all you care about. Katie Dippold did some of my favorite work on Parks and Recreation, and I definitely noticed her influence more in the extended edition! :) TLDR; If you saw and enjoyed the original, it's definitely worth seeing this version, especially if you like character based humor!
I watched this, expecting it to be better than the reviews had indicated--mostly because of the immediate panning from fans who loved the original male-cast Ghostbusters. I didn't see this as a 'reboot' of old material, but as a newer take on an old concept. But, this movie was far worse than I expected. The plot felt rushed, contrived and unfunny--despite some accomplished comediennes. Kristen Wiig's character was similar to her Bridesmaid's character (I felt), and I didn't buy her as a nearly tenured academic. In fact, I didn't buy it with Melissa McCarthy or Kate McKinnon's characters, either. Most of the time, it was just spewing of scientific words to back up a poorly done plot. In the end, I was left feeling empty and a few dollars more broke. The only character that I felt a twinge of authenticity from was Leslie Jones. Kate McKinnon didn't disappoint, but she wasn't enough to save this poor, fragile movie. I don't think I'd support a sequel, because...well, this one was practically terrible. Just go into it with low expectations so you won't be utterly disappointed, just moderately so. An all-female cast didn't ruin this movie. A poorly devised plot did.
I was pretty excited to see if it would live up to the reviews as many claimed it was pretty good. I had pretty low expectations and I have to say it shattered them. This movie is just plain terrible. There are quite a few funny lines and moments, but the whole story just blows. The ghosts look awful, the plot is pretty stupid, and they just tried way too hard with this movie. However, I thought the actresses did a very good job! Had this been a different movie, it would have been good, but Paul Feig was determined to ruin Ghostbusters, and he succeeded. I feel bad that these actors and actresses have to be associated with just a crappy story and special effects. This movie is not Ghostbusters but one of those cheap knock off B-movies. Please, ladies, if someone asks if you want to make another you say NO!
TBH, I got a bit caught up in all the hate for this movie before and during it's theater run - perhaps, in part, due to some outside influences. But after seeing the film (twice) and the extended edition (once), this is actually a very funny, modern day Ghostbusters movie. No, it's not as good as the original, but don't make the mistake of thinking this version is a "remake", because it's not. It's a completely new Ghostbusters film, with a new cast and story that pays homage to the original with a few familiar faces. You could say, like with many comic book storylines, this film is set in an alternate universe. The characters were completely unique and each their own. For the most part, I thought the story was great and it was leading to something big, but unfortunately, while it had some memorable sequences (Holtzmann's new toys), the final act fell flat. Personally, I preferred the extended edition over the theater edition - some of the new scenes I thought were very funny, but others might feel they were over-done, which is probably why they got cut to begin with. Overall, tho, I think everybody should forget all the "hate" and actually give this film a chance.
Another Sony cash grab/ don't listen to the feminazis I watched this film to give it a chance and had a headache at the end. I don't understand how Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, and Melissa McCarthy can all star in a movie and make so many flat lined jokes. Some just get repetitive like the wonton soup shit, and Chris Hemsworth's idiocy just is just painful to watch. The cameos are also disrespectful since Bill Murray, Dan Ackroyd, and Sigourney Weaver don't even play their original roles and the movie has Murray die in a scene just for shits and giggles.
This is a movie that I wish had not been made. I have no problems with there being an all female quartet. I might've chosen differently, but I have no issue with them, as some people seem to. There are even a few pretty good one liners & quick jokes in it! I have a problem with the overall story, the effects, and just some of the choices that were made. The effects were just too much. They just flooded the screen with a complete fantasy CGI world, to the point where it wasn't even slightly reasonably believable. Their equipment/gear? For people that really don't have too much money, developing & building "Transformers" level tech, is absurd. The "moves" & camera angles they use during some fighting towards the end? Could possibly have looked good in an action movie, but not a comedy like Ghostbusters. There is PLENTY more, but one other thing I didn't like? Ecto 1. Yeah, as far as in reality/logistically, it works to serve their needs. But a hearse? No. I'm also a HUGE Ghostbusters fan so this was all VERY carefully considered. Try to see this for free, instead of paying for it. If you like it, then pay for it, if not, you'll be happy you didn't spend the money.
Not much fun and not very funny Individually all four leads were ok but together they barely worked at all with McCarthy the real weak link in this mix. Most of the jokes just fall flat. The pacing is off. The editing lousy. The story just plain awful. They went the Ghostbusters 2 route with the campiness of the ghosts and took it even further=bad idea. The CGI was B movie quality. I realize they wanted to make this movie stand on its own from the original and that's fine but where the original's formula worked this one didn't.
Almost everyone loved the original "Ghostbusters" movie and some were upset that it was going to be re-made with an all-female cast. I, for one, was excited to see this movie with the all-female cast, especially the ladies from SNL and Melissa McCarthy. I can't think of anyone who can't help but compare this movie to the original, but I am going to try. So here it goes... The story was okay. They took a little too long in the character development. The little side comments were funny but they relied a little too much on them. Seemed like there was one every 30 seconds. Chris Hemsworth character was a little TOO dumb for my liking. It took about an 1h 45m to get to the meat of the movie... the actual ghost busting. There were a couple of scenes before that point where they fought some ghosts to whet your appetite. On the positive side, the casting of the Ghostbusters couldn't have been better, which is unfortunate because they only had an "okay" story to work with. The cameos were very cool and there were a LOT of cameos. So glad to see almost all of the original "Ghostbusters" be a part of the movie. If they do a second one, I hope they work a little more on the story.
Warning!! Don't waste real money on this pile of garbage! So I had heard all the bad press and figured it was just people being mad they remade Ghostbusters. I was wrong. This movie was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. The Haunted Mansion with Eddie Murphy was so much better. The jokes in this were far and few between. Nobody was funny. It was absolutely boring. I wish I had my four dollars back. It was a complete waste of money. I'm not going to waste another minute trying to even write a review..
Completely average. I went in to watch this movie as neutrally as I could. There are parts I like, and parts I really didn't like. A lot of the humor would hit fairly good, but was immediately made unfunny by them continuing to push the joke or trying to point the joke out to audiences. The movie dragged in parts and could've had a fair bit of time cut out if they'd just removed the rambling dialog scenes that added nothing to the story. You could tell the actors were told to just be funny.
(*Caution, some spoilers... but don't worry... this movie spoils itself*) While I usually appreciate keeping a franchise alive, this movie simply should not have been made. I'm entirely fine with a new cast, but the acting/writing was extremely poor. I think the script also failed at highlighting the talents of these "A list" actors. At times they even seemed uncomfortable in their roles. It felt like I was watching a spoof of the original, a crummy xerox of an original great movie. I've never seen a movie try so hard to be funny. All it was missing was Jeb Bush saying "please laugh" instead of please clap every time they tried to funny. There were many moments that I genuinely wanted to like this movie, but not even seconds later it was spoiled by dumb story lines and histrionic fatuous acting. I was excited for the cameos of the original cast and had hoped it would have paid better respect to their characters, instead it made me miss their version even more. I hope they don't make a sequel. They tried, I admire the effort, but they failed.
Poor comedy so so action movie The jokes fall flat and as a African American the depiction of patty is shamefully stereotypical it is like they wrote all of her lines for a talking kids toy. The Overall movie wasn't terrible it had some nice action moments and special effects however this was clearly a cash grab riding on nostalgia to try to win over its audience. It is a OK popcorn flick worth the rental but not worth going to the movies or purchase.
This movie was not good. While the special effects were OK they were completely over the top.. I love Melissa McCarthy but this has got to be one of her if not the worst movie she's ever done. By the time the movie was over I just kept thinking "there's 2 hours of my life I'll never get back" The storyline was dull the acting was horrendous and I really cant believe I paid 6.99 to watch this. I was excited to see it come out but was left with utter disappointment. I would really like a refund for this trash!!
I tried, I really did. I wanted to like it. I was even in a Ghostbusters mood. I even don't completely hate Ghostbusters 2. This though.. I was alternately bored, cringing at unfunny crude attempts at jokes, baffled that sexual harassment is somehow worthy of being a running gag, disappointed and in a rare few moments actually enjoying myself. I don't regret having seen it or having paid to see it.. I wanted to give it a fair chance and it nauseated me on its own merits. The acting was fine.. The directing and writing, awful.
Disgusting This movie should be ashamed of itself. It was never in the frame of ever being funny. There we're scenes that made no sense and left me wondering what was going on. There was no story line, the lines we're random and out of nowhere. I can't believe I saw such a disgrace to the original ghostbusters. It was pure horse crap and I'm glad it lost 1.4 billion dollars on this white trash.
Ignore the Call To be perfect honest, I saw the original first before seeing this film and I have to say: Everyone's right. This film blows. Not of the jokes land, the character development was terrible (and I thought Jurassic World had bad character development) and even though they kinda did played their respects to the name, but failed miserably. I have no problem with cast, it just the script, THAT the problem! Everything else, other than the cast, was bad. This film will basically be forgettable.
I gave it a shot All the positive reviews are from people whom have a paid interest. This is the biggest pile of crap I have seen in a long time. Ugh. The jokes are wooden, the acting is sub par. The special effects look lame as hell. I didnt really know about the hype before hand. Hahahaha Rotten Tomatoes, owned by Sony, a 73? Really? I cant get the time back I wasted on this.
While Ghostbusters (2016) will never be the best movie ever, it is a fun, campy, humor filled romp through a modern-day New York City with a new cast of very talented Ghostbusters. Not all jokes land, but enough do to give most viewers a healthy dose of laughter throughout the film's runtime. Give it a watch and you probably won't be disappointed; the only reasons for the large amount of hate directed towards the film are misplaced nostalgia (the original really wasn't *that* good), or latent sexism; these girls hunt ghosts as well as the original team.
Wow, any man saying this is sexist, must be mighty insecure. I guess that's what happens when you can't get out of your black box... However, the movie wasnt bad at all. Actually a bit surprised. Huge GB fan growing up and this was pretty much what I expected for a new age. I don't know what everyone was hoping for with the aging cast, but it's certainly a case of damned if you do, damned if you don't
Remake a movie the way it should be or don't make it at all. We should remake Charlie's Angels with all guys. And as well with the cast come on with these stupid injustices about men and women people. They are actors and actresses and make more money in one movie than we do in a lifetime. Women please stop with your - yea that's right it's about time women finally getting recognized attitude. All you doing really is helping Hollywood women.
Pure Garbage.... DON'T RUIN CLASSIC'S I was already against this movie as soon as the idea hit the internet but I figured I'd give it a chance being the die-hard Ghostbusters fan that I've always been but I got a quarter through the movie and that was enough for me it was a hot mess and they should have never messed with a classic to begin with..... I'm disgraced as a true Ghostbusters fan since a little kid.
Was stupid I didn't want to see it the first time but was talked into watching it. That's two hours of my life I'll never get back. What makes you think I want to see 15 more minutes of this garbage. I'm not understanding why Hollywood feels the need to keep rebooting the classics. 99 percent of the time they turn out bad.
Save your money for a better film A waste of time and money. Just a big let down. A disappointing remake like Clash of the titans, Robocop, The Karate kid, Conan the barbarian. Story could have been so much better. Have the original cast retire, train the next generation, and let them take over the business. It could have pleased the older and younger generation together. Look at the newest Star wars. A good ghostbusters crew just a bad story with a lot of flaws.
Open your mind and loosen up. I remember reading a lot of hateful things when this movie was in development. As well as a lot of comments about hating a full lady team. Nobody complained when it was all guys. Double standards for a time long gone. I watched this movie with no preconceptions, and it was splendid. I hope there is a sequel, and my suggestion for improvements would be that in the jokes and the confused sequences with Melissa McCarthy, they need to pick up the pace. It's like a sudden break check in a smooth rhythm.
Feminist Propaganda It's basically a commentary of the 3rd wave feminist agenda. "Women can do anything men can do, but better" (Not true) And is constantly showing the women as the smart and funny saviors while every male character is depicted as a borderline retarded, cowardly cuck. The only man in the movie who isn't portrayed as stupid is the big black dude in the main cast with the woman's name. Leslie I think? He is the only positive.
The best part of this ghost busters movie is the the backlash of comments and don't deleting negative feedback to up its reviews they should have owned up to that not many people like it. It's up there with Batman and robin for how bad it is. This movie could have been good , but instead they went so outlandish it's on the verge of ruining the original films for me. Anyone that speaks out with a negative outlook of this movie is automatically assumed to be a bigger of some kind. Less comedy and different actresses could have made a world of difference too, yet they reinforce stereotypes and make assets of themselves, only feminists and cucks would say this movie is good.
This movie does more than give little girls heroes to admire. Ghostbusters is a movie that takes the idea that women can't be funny and smashes it to pieces while subverting tropes that are normally for female roles (I'm looking at you, Kevin) and showing how ridiculous those tropes really are. While I do think that the extended edition has one extraneous bit (Erin's boyfriend), it's not enough to detract from the movie or hamper enjoyment. From beginning to end there are solid goofs that get guffaws and a line of lovable, relatable characters. Definitely worth purchasing. I can't wait to see more of the new Ghostbusters.
Enjoyable watch. Funny movie. The humor and pace wore a little thin in spots, and the music was bad, but the movie always turned itself around. My whole family; kids, adults, and grandparents, were laughing the whole way through. Anyone who accuses it of man-hating watched another movie. Yes, the pretty, ditzy, blond, receptionist stereotype that is still common today was a man, and the big bad was as well. All the other men were just normal guys.
Don't fail to miss it. I'm not overly fond of the original, but this was just plain awful... I'm not sure what the worst part was, honestly. It may have been that it was a "because we can" reboot with a script that felt like it was penned by someone barely literate, or it may have been that one of the main characters is a vaguely racist stereotype and nothing more...
Just not good This review has nothing to do with the all female cast or the fact that this is a reboot. The movie just wasn't that good. The interaction and personality of the characters is poor. The movie did pick up near the end and the characters seemed to have finally come together as well as the acting. But overall just not there for to much of the film. Shame really, it had great potential.
Not Bad At All...See it for yourself before you Judge This movie is a fun comedy that served it's purpose which is to make us laugh.I think all four ladies did a good job and all were equally funny bringing there own style of comedy to the movie. I loved the Cameo's. The movie did not deserve the negative reviews nor did the ladies deserve the negative social media, news articles & press comments regarding the characters/roles that were portrayed. I can think of several other movies made that are offensive in regards to gender or race. This is NOT one of them.
3 stars... with caveat I understand some people downrating this are definitely doing so because they're sexist. Many haven't even seen the film. I actually have seen it and I'm rating it at 3 because it actually is quite sexist, despite several laughs it got from me. In fact it has all of the same 'sexist problems' women tend to have with movies. I don't support when it is sexist against women, and won't either when it's against men.
Politically correct garbage The worst remake ever. It's unfunny with bad effects and a lazy script. The cast is terrible. The director captures none of tge light hearted whimsy of the original. It'd almost like half the people working on this cinematic abortion went out if their way to trash the franchise.
It really is mediocre at best. A lot of people will go in hating this movie. If you go in with a hateful attitude, it'll be the worse movie ever. Is it great? No. And I don't think it'll be a cult classic and I don't think it's anyone's favorite movie. The best I can say about this movie is that it has a few laughs, some good ideas, but nothing is perfectly on point. It's okay. The sad thing is that it's just an okay movie that will be forgotten after a few years.
