"Independence Day: Resurgence" is a dull, brainless sequel, representing how sadly major studio film quality has declined in the intervening two decades. And how gullible the makers think audiences...
Brian Lowry
Moreover, the movie keeps announcing over and over exactly how much time is left before the world gets destroyed. In practical terms, that simply reminds the audience that this two-hour exercise...
Anthony Lane
The first "Independence Day" had the gratifying slap of good pop cinema, harmless and weightless; the follow-up is twice as big and half as fun.
James Berardinelli
The temptation is there to say that Independence Day: Resurgence tarnishes the image of its predecessor but the original Independence Day wasn't all that good to begin with.
David Sims
It's a non-movie, an insult to the blockbuster genre, and should stand only as a perfect example of Hollywood's more glaring deficiencies as an industry.
Chris Nashawaty
Disposable and shockingly inept.

User reviews
In what has turned into a pointless rating system. Google Play has run into a problem with people basing movies off nostalgia, repetition, originality, or computer generated visuals. A rating system that has more 1's and 5's from users who can't effectively grasp how to effectively review any medium but rather tell you how disappointed they are that it's just like every other thousands of movies they've already seen. I wish I was a child again just so I can't be so critical over movies. A form of entertainment we criticize for being too safe or too over the top, and not just turning off our brains to enjoy it as pure entertainment. ~Independence Day was rather explosive and thrilling. It does however have an urgency to tell a story rather than developing it. The plot could've been more effective as a 2 part story, but it was kept to a single movie despite it conflicting with the natural flow of the storyline. Overall it was a great movie, but seemed rushed and that affected how immersed people were in this film.
I hope someone was fired How could anyone have watched this at a studio and turned around to the rest of the studio execs and said "more kids on a bus, less actual plot." The jokes weren't funny, the acting was abysmal, don't even get me started on the actual science behind landing a moon sized spaceship on a planet, and it looks like they ran out of budget for green screen at the end. I don't even know why they added half of these characters that had such terrible one liners and no background story whatsoever. Don't even rent.
What a dumb movie This is a comedy not an action film. The acting felt confused, like the actors weren't sure what genre it was supposed to be. The sequel to ID 1 deserved a 3-hour epic, a tooth and nails struggle for humankind against an insurmountable foe, with time to continue the personal drama that was so much a part of ID 1's core. This movie is not that. That being said, I laughed at the humor, I rolled my eyes at the clichés, and I ogled the CGI. If you can, give this a view on Netflix or rent it from Google.
Action, sure. Story, lack luster Warning: May contain spoilers. I was so excited when I heard this was coming out. You gave us a story that's a continuation but very little is really explained. You killed most of the original cast from the first movie but you leave David's father with a pointless storyline. You tried to give it heart but everyone just wanted some action and maybe a little comedy. There could have been so much more to it and a lot could have been left out too. Please don't try to make another.
Turn your brain off It's like the first movie, but more convoluted. If you want action, it does pretty well. If you want to scratch your head and ask questions like, "If the queen is so smart, why does she..." or, "If it's known the aliens can get in your head, doesn't that actually make you the LEAST qualified person for the job?" I mean, I guess the first movie did involve a magic computer virus screwing with the aliens' stuff so maybe this one does fit well!
This is why certain movies should not have sequels after about 15 minutes into the movie I started driving bamboo shoots under my fingernails so I could determine which was more painful that or watching this movie! If you are going to watch this movie my advice is to get a bottle of Jack Daniels a revolver and one bullet. Then proceeded to play Russian Roulette and hopefully before the movie ends the chamber fires.
Horrible just horrible. All they kept doing was rehasing our favorite plot points from the original film. Why? If I wanted to see the old movie I would have watched the old movie! Just make a new movie already. God. why do they feel they have to do that? The writing was horrible and they tried to cover it up with lackluster special effects. The queen? Really? They want our core? Stupid stuff man. I mean it's watchable.
No way **spoiler alert!** The script was a rehash of the first movie. The audience laughed when the alien queen chased a bus full of kids through the salt flats. It's confusing, the jokes aren't funny, so much didn't make sense. I was so excited to see the remake and almost asked for my money back upon leaving. Save your money, this will be free on Netflix in two months.
Horrible This was one of the worse science fiction movies that I've seen in a long time. The scenes were so random. All the pilots were 20 something and couldn't act. No real emotion or character development. The father drives with kids randomly, finds his son and drives in a school bus towards the Queen. There's much more but not worth mentioning. Please don't rent this horrible movie. They even had the nerve to set this movie up for sequel. Please stop.
Where is the fun and clever jokes? Where is Will Smith? This was extremely difficult to keep concentration on. The only thing enjoyable was the CGI which was at the end of the movie. It was blah, just my humble opinion. Someone needed a write off lol. Its okay. This movie was not worth 14.99 FYI, if they won't let you rent it I noticed the movies turn out horrible and they don't care because you already paid that. Ugh Blah Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz I am actually sleepy I think the queen alien sucked the energy from the PC screen. I have seen better movies made 20 years ago . NO I feel dumb and broke.
I was a big fan of the original Independence Day and its sequel has failed to live up to it in every single way. From thin relationships to overacting, this movie suffers from about every problem imaginable. Clearly a cash grab if I ever saw one. Too bad because with this film's budget, it could've been ten times better.
Yawntastic drivel that never should have been made. Nothing more than a money grab trying to ride the nostalgia of the original. Don't waste your time with it. It almost makes Phantom Menace look Shakespearean in quality. It's no wonder Will Smith gave the script a big fat NOPE.
This movie should have been the trailer on repeat for two hours If the original were this bad. There would be no sequal. I will give another star if the directors cut can be the cast and crew reading user reviews for the entirety of this film.
Why such lackluster reviews? This movie was oddly entertaining despite the negativity surrounding it. It delivered no needless patriotism and did not gravitate towards propaganda. The cameos by actors were neither grandiose nor repugnant. Nothing like 'the fly' man in those Jurassic Park sequels. The movie was lame but no worse than Will Smith ruining a movie by playing the same character over and over whether it be a western or space movie. Definitely a great movie to watch, rent it.
ID RES. R.I.P. PVP (Poor Very Poor) Any War of the World stories, people know take place in the present time. This story might have been better, if they had shown the progress of man to be as slow as we know we are. To let other (ALF'S) the opportunities to show good faith or become aggressive as before, would have been a better story line, than to yoke the first visitors to show up 20yrs. after our incounter with a hostile race! 1/2 way or 3/4 way through the movie we show em! DFWU
Ignorant reviews Anyone saying this movie is unoriginal doesn't know what a SEQUEL is. This film is excellent, considering what they had to work with after losing their shot at getting Will Smith. The story answers a lot of questions that were left open ended after the first film. Jeff Goldblum and Judd Hirsch are both GREAT. I only wish they had gone further into the story of the relationship between the scientists.
*Zero ★. . . Because ID rates 4.5★ and ID:R rates 2★ for end portion CG & few other good bits. But total is Zero★ because promoter(s) &/or google play store (gps) Unwilling to Rent, because if people rent ID:R, most may not buy it. Jog-On gps & film promoters, you'll not catch me as a fool to take my money 2nd or the 1st time. *ID 4.5★ is a Grand Viewing, I've Watched Many+ Times. ID:R 2★ is Not so Grand, it has it's good moments & some good CG but is Generally Lacking Greatly. •Mic Cl;-)~ Ririe, Idaho USA•
Boring and bad Not much to say about this movie other than the plot and make any sense, there's barely anything really happening in the movie and the acting is so bad in this movie that made me think that nobody really cared when they were filming this movie.
Another completely botched sequel, that once again, not only underestimates the intelligence of sci-fi fans, but also is ridden with horrific script cliches and poor casting choices. This could have be so much more. Sad. It is the perfect diversion though, for those with a bored child's mind.
Wasn't as good as the 1st one The 1st time I watched it, I caught myself doing doing things in between the movie, which means it wasn't catching my attention. I tried watching it a second time and fell asleep which means I was bored, forcing myself to get threw it. I'd recommend if you want to see it that badly, wait til it comes on Netflix, so you'll feel like your not paying for it, but you are paying for it, if that makes since lol
best part of the movie is the funny reviews, seriously bad People who think this was a good movie have either bad taste or were just excited that they didn't have to answer all the why questions from their little crib midgets for a couple hours. Full of bad punch lines and bad acting. Along with that it seemed the cgi and sound did not set the scenes well. I had to skip through all the horrible side stories. I never comment even when it's bad but this one made me feel obligated to! Sorry guys I wish they had done better I was actually excited to see this one.
Really predictable which made it boring. The plot was really rushed and the climax did not have enough to satisfy a sub par effort. I wouldn't re-watch this thing even on Netflix and Chill mode.
I give this movie a 0 if i could This movie so gay they should've used will smith. Like brah you dont use the main character in da first movie and then not use him in the second
They waited 20 years to ruin a masterpiece. I've watched the original a thousand times. I bought this so excited to see it... down right awful. I'm still not even sure what happened. God this movie sucks.
WE HAD TWENTY YEARS TO PREPARE. SO DID THEY. All, right. The original 1996 film was good. It was fantastic. But this film was somewhat terrible. Resurgence was a huge letdown, since almost none of the original cast appeared. Dr. Okun is revealed to be gay (Quote: "they don't let us out much".) Even the soundtrack was somewhat low quality. And they are trying to make a third film. How are they gonna do that when they killed most of the cast? We expected better, Emmerich. Oh, and I honestly expected a White House destruction scene. Again.
Random characters Okay we get it. The world consists of different people and cultures. So let's just squeeze them all in a plot and never develop them. Good idea! The plot is nonsense, long, and complete waste of time.
New actors ruined it The old returning cast did great! Having said that the new cast members did an awful job. The guy playing will Smith's son was by far the worst actor in the movie which is sad because will Smith did so good in the 1st movie.
If you liked the first movie don't ruin it by watching this This movie totally ruined id4 #1 because this film is so awful. I'd rather suck an alien off from Cinco de mayo all the way until the 4th of July than watch this pile of alien ballsack movie.
Ok But Original Was Way Better This movie could've picked up where the 1st left off and they could've made a blockbuster movie with a really cool story, but thats not what happened. What happened was a not so good sequel was made with half a new cast and half the original. Way to many comedy one liners. This movie should've went the more serious route with a lot better story line made. I cant believe I've been waiting 20yrs for a sequel to the original and this is what they gave us. Effects look good and its nice to see original cast.
This movie changed me I walked into this movie excited for a fun big budget blockbuster popcorn flick. I walked out half an hour before the end cynical and wary of all future blockbuster movies. This movie is an insult to the audience.
Looks great but..... Some reviews have said that there was no original thought put into this movie and that it's the same as the first. Really? It's an alien invasion movie by the same aliens on the same planet! Of course it's going to be like the first one! There's not much more originality involved in making a movie with the same exact plot....They invade, we kill'em! The only thing they could possibly do is ramp up the special effects, which looked awesome!
Written by a 12 year old Movie tried to add depth to obvious 2D characters with some conflict for which very little context is provided. Plot must have been written by the producer's kids on the way back from summer camp.
Kind of liked it I was really hyped up for this movie and got goosebumps in the trailer. Obviously it was nowhere as good but I still believe it has potential and some great emotional scenes although nowhere near as brilliant and breathtaking as the speech in the original. If your a person who doesn't judge movies and still has fun with things that aren't as amazing as what was hyped and you love Jeff or just respect (Roland Emmerich) then go check this epic this out!
So bad it's funny. This is the absolute lowest of the low. How was it even completed? I hope someone was fired for this. At least I had a bit if a laugh...
Horrible, horrible, horrible Don't waste your money or time. I demand a refund. No wonder will Smith wanted nothing to do with this crap of a movie
Could have been so much better The first movie was great. This one is just bad, cg looked very fake during many scenes. The acting is mediocre. There are too many characters, the viewers never got a chance to get attached to any. That women Catherine, she literally played no role in the plot.
One of the worst movies I've ever seen I liked the original and had high hopes for this movie. Some how this movie was lost in director hell that editing couldn't fix. The movie was so bad I was laughing at how scenes jumped randomly around and scenes you thought were important never come back up again. There was just serious lack of consistency and continuity in this movie. I wanted to love this movie, but I can't deny it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Didn't do the original justice, it deserved a better sequel than this.
If i could give zero stars i would. This movie is beyond ridiclous and cheesy. The dialouge is garbage, the plot is garbage, and the acting is poor. I wish i could unwatch this movie because i love the original movie so much.
Dumbest movie of the year I can't say much more about this movie other than it was dumb. I think that the movie never actually had a consistent tone. It was funny, it was serious, or it was even both at the same time. However, I have to say that the visuals and 3d were excellent and exciting. I would normally say to just wait until you can rent it but I think that seeing it on a smaller screen would make it worse. My point is that if you are going to see it at all, see it in the theater in 3d. I will rate this a 4 out of 10.
To have some of the same actors and the same director come back after 20 years for a squeal is amazing. It somewhat reminded me of Godzilla. The combination of human and alien technology is very cool, but the story line and characters need better work. I know this isn't a superhero movie, but it would be more exciting if they had the Avengers or the X-Men or maybe the Guardians fighting the alien queen in the end.
