* We are moving into modern China and it is a complicated history that involves several revolutions and a lot of CHANGE
* This is a VERY simplified version of history today
* PURPOSE is to serve as a background for our guest speaker who is coming in on Tuesday who will speak about life during a period of time in which Red Scarf Girl is set
Turn of the 20th Century:
* China was Colonized by many European countries
* China resisted but was splintered into factions and warlords
* Opium war: China fought Britain
* 1911 Revolution: A new system of government in China for first time in 2500 years!
* No more DYNASTY
The Republic of China:
* China tried this thing for a little while
* Some western ideas spread
* Competing interest by the west
* Nationalist and the Communist rise and they don’t like each other
Before WWII:
* Communist are not liked by the nationalist and begin to be targeted by the government
* In southern China the communist army was surrounded by the nationalist army and they had to march out and around the country (The LONG MARCH)
* Along the way, the Communist faced near death but made it to another communist stronghold
* They decide to work together though to fight the Japanese during WWII because Japan had invaded China in order to colonize
After World War II/The Peoples Republic of China:
* Mao is regarded as the hero of the Communist Part and is loved by the people
* The Nationalist were kicked out the nationalist who fled to create what is now Taiwan
* Mao forces landlords and wealthy people to work in the fields and many fled the country
* Mao wants to sell excess grains abroad to fund the growth of China but it is not that simple
The Cultural Revolution:
* Mao was losing power because his systems were not as successful as he planned
* Chinese people were supposed to end all old traditions and re-embrace communist values
* This led to a culture of fear for many Chinese people because even if they loved Mao and communism, some of them still had strong cultural beliefs

People's Republic
"People's Republic" is a title used by certain republican states. Initially associated with populism (people's movements: Völkisch movement, Narodnik, others), it eventually became associated with countries adhering to communism, after the creation of the Soviet Union, such as China. However, the term is not unique to communist states. Many countries adopted the title given its rather generic nature, like Bangladesh, which was founded as a liberal parliamentary republic after a popular war of independence.
Marxist–Leninist People's Republics
The motivation for using this term lies in the claim that Marxist–Leninists govern in accordance with the interests of the vast majority of the people, and, as such, a Marxist–Leninist republic is a people's republic. Many of these countries also called themselves socialist states in their constitutions; Albania, for instance, used both terms, "socialist" and "people's", in its official name from 1976 to 1991. In the West, countries governed by Marxist–Leninists are referred to as "Communist states", though they never actually used this name for themselves and used the term countries of people's democracy. In the 1990s, many of the self-styled "People's Republics" of Eastern Europe (Poland, Hungary, and Bulgaria) and Mongolia dropped the term and became known simply as "Republics" as they adopted liberal democratic systems of government — the term "People's Republic" being associated with the former Communist regimes.

Taiwan (
i/ˌtaɪˈwɑːn/; Chinese: 臺灣 or 台灣; see below), officially the Republic of China (ROC; Chinese: 中華民國; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Mínguó), is a sovereign state in East Asia. The Republic of China, originally based in mainland China, now governs the island of Taiwan, which constitutes more than 99% of its territory, as well as Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, and other minor islands, following its loss of the mainland China territory in 1949 in the Chinese Civil War. This remaining area is also constitutionally called the "Free area of the Republic of China" which is not ruled by the Communist Party of China in Beijing.
Neighboring states include the People's Republic of China (PRC) to the west (mainland China), Japan to the east and northeast, and the Philippines to the south. Taiwan is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with a population density of 649 people per km2 in October 2015.Taipei is the seat of the central government, and together with the surrounding cities of New Taipei and Keelung forms the largest metropolitan area on the island.

China, officially the People's Republic of China (PRC), is a sovereign state in East Asia. It is the world's most populous country, with a population of over 1.35 billion. The Himalaya, Karakoram, Pamir and Tian Shan mountain ranges separate China from South and Central Asia. The Yangtze and Yellow Rivers, the third- and sixth-longest in the world, run from the Tibetan Plateau to the densely populated eastern seaboard. China's coastline along the Pacific Ocean is 14,500 kilometres (9,000 mi) long, and is bounded by the Bohai, Yellow, East and South China Seas.

The Sunday People
The Sunday People is a British tabloid Sunday newspaper, founded as The People on 16 October 1881.
It is published by the Trinity Mirror Group, and shares a website with the Mirror papers. In July 2011 it had an average Sunday circulation of 806,544. By January 2014 the circulation had shrunk to 374,820. Despite its tagline claim to be a "truly independent" newspaper, The People endorsed the Labour Party at the 2015 general election on the recommendation of polling data from its readers.

Setting the purpose for watching this video: * Intro to video * We are moving into modern China and it is a complicated history that involves several revolutions and a lot of CHANGE * This is a VERY simplified version of history today * PURPOSE is to serve as a background for our guest speaker who is coming in on Tuesday who will speak about life during a period of time in which Red Scarf Girl is set Turn of the 20th Century: * China was Colonized by many European countries * China resisted but was splintered into factions and warlords * Opium war: China fought Britain * 1911 Revolution: A new system of government in China for first time in 2500 years! * No more DYNASTY The Republic of China: * China tried this thing for a little while * Some western ideas spread * Competing interest by the west * Nationalist and the Communist rise and they don’t like each other Before WWII: * Communist are not liked by the nationalist and begin to be targeted by the government * In southern China the communist army was surrounded by the nationalist army and they had to march out and around the country (The LONG MARCH) * Along the way, the Communist faced near death but made it to another communist stronghold * They decide to work together though to fight the Japanese during WWII because Japan had invaded China in order to colonize After World War II/The Peoples Republic of China: * Mao is regarded as the hero of the Communist Part and is loved by the people * The Nationalist were kicked out the nationalist who fled to create what is now Taiwan * Mao forces landlords and wealthy people to work in the fields and many fled the country * Mao wants to sell excess grains abroad to fund the growth of China but it is not that simple The Cultural Revolution: * Mao was losing power because his systems were not as successful as he planned * Chinese people were supposed to end all old traditions and re-embrace communist values * This led to a culture of fear for many Chinese people because even if they loved Mao and communism, some of them still had strong cultural beliefs * *** This time in history is what our guest speaker on Tuesday will be talking about -

* We are moving into modern China and it is a complicated history that involves several revolutions and a lot of CHANGE
* This is a VERY simplified version of history today
* PURPOSE is to serve as a background for our guest speaker who is coming in on Tuesday who will speak about life during a period of time in which Red Scarf Girl is set
Turn of the 20th Century:
* China was Colonized by many European countries
* China resisted but was splintered into factions and warlords
* Opium war: China fought Britain
* 1911 Revolution: A new system of government in China for first time in 2500 years!
* No more DYNASTY
The Republic of China:
* China tried this thing for a little while
* Some western ideas spread
* Competing interest by the west
* Nationalist and the Communist rise and they don’t like each other
Before WWII:
* Communist are not liked by the nationalist and begin to be targeted by the government
* In southern China the communist army was surrounded by the nationalist army and they had to march out and around the country (The LONG MARCH)
* Along the way, the Communist faced near death but made it to another communist stronghold
* They decide to work together though to fight the Japanese during WWII because Japan had invaded China in order to colonize
After World War II/The Peoples Republic of China:
* Mao is regarded as the hero of the Communist Part and is loved by the people
* The Nationalist were kicked out the nationalist who fled to create what is now Taiwan
* Mao forces landlords and wealthy people to work in the fields and many fled the country
* Mao wants to sell excess grains abroad to fund the growth of China but it is not that simple
The Cultural Revolution:
* Mao was losing power because his systems were not as successful as he planned
* Chinese people were supposed to end all old traditions and re-embrace communist values
* This led to a culture of fear for many Chinese people because even if they loved Mao and communism, some of them still had strong cultural beliefs
