Bosingak is a bell pavilion in Seoul. It was originally built in 1396, but it was destroyed in a fire. The bell was rebuilt in 1468 and is now in the national museum. The bell in the belfrey was built in 1985 with funds raised by the public.
The bell was used to keep time during the Joseon Dynasty. There were 4 gates in Seoul where people could go in and out. At 4 a.m. the bell would ring 33 times and the gates would open. At 10 p.m. the bell would ring 28 times and the gates would close.

I was lucky to get there for the bell ringing ceremony. There is a bell ringing ceremony held daily (except Mondays) at 11:30am. I got there a little bit late, but was able to see the whole ceremony.

If you′re in central Seoul， one of the most popular places to be is the Bosingak Bell， in Jongno－gu district，... and that′s where our Shin Se－min is standing by for us tonight.
Se－min， what′s the atmosphere like down there？
Daniel，… the sun has set now... and we′re inching closer to the new year.
Behind me is the one and only Bosingak Pavilion， where people gather to welcome the new year with a bell ringing ceremony.
And as we head into the evening hours，... people are starting to gather around the venue for a big count－down to the year 2016.
Indeed. And what can you tell us about this evening′s ceremony？
Yes， it′s going to be a night packed with performances… by the Seoul choir and others.
But the highlight will be the bell ringing ceremony.
The bell will be rung 33 times，…a special number in Buddhism as it symbolizes humanitarianism.
Seoul Mayor Park Won－soon and eleven citizens chosen as representatives for 2015... will ring the bell，... including a doctor who treated MERS patients and a firefighter who saved the lives of a dozen citizens.
Now，… those of you who are planning to come out and join the crowd... will want to leave your cars behind，… as traffic around the area will be restricted.
However， all forms of public transportation... will run on extended hours，... with subways and city buses running until 2 A.M.
If you′re taking the subway， you should know that trains won′t stop at Jongak station， the closest one to Bosingak， for safety reasons.

We joined the massive crowds at the Bosingak Belfry in Seoul to (literally) ring in the New Year. At midnight, they rang the bell 33 times. There was live music and entertainment starting around 11:30pm, and then after midnight as well. Very lively crowd even though it was freezing cold out.

Hi guys, it has gotten dark here... signaling that we are nearing the end of the day and of course the end of the year
You can see the Bosingak pavilion behind me, where the bell ringing ceremony will take place.
We have a night of musical performances and a light show lined up, as well as an event where artificial clouds will be sent up into the sky.
Artificial clouds? That should be interesting. So are a lot of people already there to see the ceremony?
Yes, people are gradually trickling in.
I think most people are probably having dinner before coming out.
Eventually, around 100-thousand people are expected to be here for the big countdown to 2015.
So that IS going to be a big celebration.
And, the highlight is going to be the ringing of the Bosingak bell.
For our international viewers,... the Bosingak pavilion was built in the 14th century and the Bosingak bell used to be struck to announce that the gates around Seoul were being opened and closed.
But these days, the bell is rung just once a year.
That′s what makes the New Year′s event so unique.
It will be rung a total of 33 times, a number that has special meaning in Buddhism.
Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon, other city officials and eleven citizens have been picked to do the honors of striking the bell.
I′ll give you more details of WHO those people are in our later broadcast.
Now, for those who plan to come out to the venue, it′s a good idea to leave your cars behind, as traffic will be restricted in the area.
Public transportation will be extended today, with subways running until 2 a.m., but they won′t stop at Jongak station, the closest one to Bosingak.

Bosingak
Bosingak is a large bell pavilion on Jongno in Seoul, South Korea. The bell in Bosingak gives Jongno its name, which literally means "bell street." It was originally constructed in 1396 but destroyed many times by both war and fire. It was designated Bosingak by Emperor Gojong in 1895.
In the Joseon Dynasty, this bell was at the center of the castle town. The bell was struck to announce the opening and closing of the four gates around Seoul. At 4 am and 10 pm the bell was struck 33 times and gates were opened and closed. It was used as a fire alarm as well. In modern times, the bell is rung only at midnight on New Year's Eve. Because of the massive number of people who attend this ceremony, Metro trains on Line 1 of the Seoul Subway do not stop at Jonggak Station on New Year's Eve.

Every city is famous for its own New Year′s celebration... if New York has a ball drop ceremony in Times Square... Seoul has the Bosingak Pavilion ringing of the bell ceremony.
Every New Year′s Eve, many Koreans choose to be in downtown Seoul... to see that ginat bell.
And that′s exactly where our Kwon Soa is standing by for us tonight.

Soa, less than six hours are left in 2014. What′s the atmosphere there like now?
Hi guys, it has gotten dark here... signaling that we are nearing the end of the day and of course the end of the year
You can see the Bosingak pavilion behind me, where the bell ringing ceremony will take place.
We have a night of musical performances and a light show lined up, as well as an event where artificial clouds will be sent up into the sky.
Artificial clouds? That should be interesting. So are a lot of people already there to see the ceremony?
Yes, people are gradually trickling in.
I think most people are probably having dinner before coming out.
Eventually, around 100-thousand people are expected to be here for the big countdown to 2015.
So that IS going to be a big celebration.
And, the highlight is going to be the ringing of the Bosingak bell.
For our international viewers,... the Bosingak pavilion was built in the 14th century and the Bosingak bell used to be struck to announce that the gates around Seoul were being opened and closed.
But these days, the bell is rung just once a year.
That′s what makes the New Year′s event so unique.
It will be rung a total of 33 times, a number that has special meaning in Buddhism.
Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon, other city officials and eleven citizens have been picked to do the honors of striking the bell.
I′ll give you more details of WHO those people are in our later broadcast.
Now, for those who plan to come out to the venue, it′s a good idea to leave your cars behind, as traffic will be restricted in the area.
Public transportation will be extended today, with subways running until 2 a.m., but they won′t stop at Jongak station, the closest one to Bosingak.

Bosingak Belfry (Bell Tower) in Seoul, South Korea
Bosingak Belfry, or bell tower, was used to keep time and as a fire alarm to protect and alert the city in times of emergency during the Joseon Dynasty. First constructed in 1396, it has been destroyed and rebuilt many times over the years. Originally, it was known as Jongnu or Jonggak. Bosingak Belfry, or bell tower, was used to keep time and as a fire alarm to protect and alert the city in times of emergency during the Joseon Dynasty. First constructed in 1396, it has been destroyed and rebuilt many times over the years. Originally, it was known as Jongnu or Jonggak. - Passed by this landmark on my way to Gwanghwamun.

- Seoul's government center. Just around 20 minutes walk from my accommodation.
• Gyeongbokgung Palace (Entrance: ₩ 3,000)
- The palace is a stone's throw away from Gwanghwamun Square.
- Changing of the Guards takes place every hour from 10am - 2pm (Duration: 15 minutes)
• Bukchon Hanok Village
- Around 20 minutes walk from Gyeongbokgung
- It's actually a residential neighborhood so travellers visiting the area should refrain from making unnecessary noises.
• Namsangol Hanok Village (Entrance: FREE)
- This is not initially in my itinerary, but most museums around Gwanghwamun area are closed on Mondays. Found this village through some research. 😉 Inside, I chanced upon Seoul's Millenium Time Capsule.

• DMZ Tour (Cost: ₩ 130,000 inclusive of lunch / transport from-to Seoul / entrance fees)
- I reserved my DMZ Tour trip via KTB - Korea Travel Bureau: http://www.go2korea.co.kr/en/Goods/Goods_Main.aspx?GoodsCode=6. You may also find the itinerary of the trip in the link provided.
- During that time, we were not able to go to the Bridge of No Return for security reasons.
- Honestly one of the priciest tours I have had, but the experience was worth it.
- It is advisable to reserve months before your scheduled trip so you'd be guaranteed a slot.
- Take note that only guided tours are allowed to be able to get into the Joint Security Area.
- Picture/video taking is restricted inside DMZ. Kindly listen to your tour guide on which areas photo/video taking is allowed.

- Best view of Seoul at night time
