A thesis or dissertation is a document submitted in support of candidature for an academic degree or professional qualification presenting the author's research and findings. In some contexts, the word "thesis" or a cognate is used for part of a bachelor's or master's course, while "dissertation" is normally applied to a doctorate, while in other contexts, the reverse is true. The term graduate thesis is sometimes used to refer to both master's theses and doctoral dissertations. Dissertations and theses may be considered to be grey literature.
The required complexity or quality of research of a thesis or dissertation can vary by country, university, or program, and the required minimum study period may thus vary significantly in duration.
The word dissertation can at times be used to describe a treatise without relation to obtaining an academic degree. The term thesis is also used to refer to the general claim of an essay or similar work.
The term "thesis" comes from the Greek θέσις, meaning "something put forth", and refers to an intellectual proposition. "Dissertation" comes from the Latin dissertātiō, meaning "path".
How much of my thesis have I written? And what the dickens is this Potential Vorticity thing?? Before people ask - NO, I won't be giving out my background chapter just yet! When it's finished and finalised for printing maybe then :P With that out the way I hope you enjoyed hearing about the experience of writing my PhD thesis! Please do ask if you have any questions about it :) As I said in the video, I do apologise if the PV section was boring or confusing. It's difficult to take such an abstract concept in the field and make it understandable to people without a background in atmospheric physics but I gave it my best shot! Please do ask away in the comments if you'd like to learn more, and check out the references below. Last PhD watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXfGUz3lo9Y Vien...

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Traditionally all PhDs went on to become academic professors. Times have changed. This speaker offers an idea to help prepare graduate students for the real world. Nadia Jaber is a graduate student at Stony Brook University, pursuing a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Her thesis work focuses on how mammalian cells discard the chemical signals used to communicate with one another. During her graduate training, she realized she wanted something different than the traditional academic career path that PhDs are geared for. Exploring her interests, she found a passion in science and health communications and has since begun the Advanced Certificate in Health Communications offered by the Alan Alda C...

One promising strategy for promoting conservation is the provision of feedback about energy use. Feedback -- the process of giving people information about their behavior to reinforce and/or change behavior--is receiving increasing attention due to changes in technology and infrastructure that allow information to be collected...

This video shows the small half-improvised piece that I've been playing at the end of my PhD defense in Applied Sciences, in November 2009. It is called "Kubrick Tribute", in reference to some elements of Eyes Wide Shut (S. Kubrick, 1999) soundtrack. Everything is created live. The instrument is the HandSketch, an instrument I invented and the voice sounds result from my PhD synthesis software: RAMCESS. Want to know more, understand how it works ? Winner of Dance your PhD 2013 by Science. Females of the red jungle fowl (forest chicken) mate with multiple males, which can create competition between sperm of different males in order to fertilize the egg. In my PhD thesis, I explored the effect of brotherhood on sperm competition and female choice. Interestingly, the brother of the first male that the female has mated with invests more sperm in the female than the non-brother of the first male mate. However, the female ejects a higher proportion of sperm from the brother of the first mate and favours the sperm of the non-brother, facilitating a higher fertility by the non-brother’s sperm. In addition to the main story, we showcase some of the interesting biology of sperm. First, sperm quality differs and while some move faster and a...
Lightbender v2 is an audiovisual instrument developed for four players each controlling the expression of a color and a tone. It was exhibited at the contemporary music festival Sound Around (2007) in the Plex music theatre in Copenhagen. The instrument incorporates a half sphere shaped water tank that serves as a semi-3D video screen. A particle system is projected into the tank leaving illuminated traces in the water. The sound is based on an additive fm synth with filtered white noise. Synth parameters are mapped directly to the behaviour of the particle system. The sound is emitted from four speakers in a surround set-up where the panning of the sound fits the position of each player and the movement of the particles. The physical interface consists of four modified game pad controlle...
