I knew Donald Trump would win because his victory accompanied a feeling that was familiar to my body. It was the same feeling I get when a patient shares or comes to me with a devastating diagnosis. They don't know how this could have happened to them. Cancer? "This cannot be happening to me." But you see, that's the thing about hindsight. Once the dust has settled and the shock wears off, you start to appreciate that there were signs -- you just chose not to listen.
Kelly Leitch stated that Trump's victory sends an "exciting message" that is needed in Canada. This is the same candidate that continues to call for screening of immigrants for so-called Canadian values. But what are these values and which groups get to define them?
I worry that you can too easily find comfort in your privilege and wrap it around you like a blanket to filter out the horror that we feel. That this comfort will allow you to move on and become silent on the terror in Trump's plan and the voices of racism. White Canadians, we need to know now.
With positions of influence (and a massive media presence), these leaders are role models for youth. We got to thinking about what kids have learned about competition, both from this election and from an increasingly cutthroat social culture.
It's the most powerful tool in our financial toolkit -- so why do so many of us run screaming from this exercise? At its most basic level, it's a personal money plan requiring a little bit of addition and subtraction. It's a plan that allows you to take control of your financial situation and live within your means.
As is often said, a photo can be worth a thousand words. The Vimy Foundation is working to help bring a human face to Canada's First World War history. In honour of Remembrance Week.... the Vimy Foundation is launching a unique and innovative project to colourize rarely seen images of the First World War, a project aimed at reengaging young Canadians on defining moments in our history.
These are people that believe so strongly in the potential of their city and are doing all they can for the world to understand one thing: "You don't need to leave Hamilton to enjoy the fruits of a growing exciting world. And if you don't live here, please do come and be part of our family to create wonder with us."
The children of war will never forget what they've been through. When that minute of silence has ended this Remembrance Day, please keep the world's child survivors in front of you. Then reach out to help them.
I could never identify exactly what so moved me on November 11th, but I could always anticipate that I would need Kleenex up my sleeve cuff... if I was heading to the cenotaph. My patriotism is never more evident than it is on Remembrance Day.... Perhaps my emotional response to the poppy is because of my heart's immediate connection to memories of my Nan and Pop.
As a cultural presence that combined the sacred and profane for over five decades of towering songs, we all have our own Leonard Cohen entry point. Like fellow Canadian Neil Young, Cohen became a patron saint of the 90s alternative nation. There was the tribute album "I'm Your Fan" and placement of "Closing Time and, especially, "The Future" in the film "Natural Born Killers."
In the few days since Donald Trump was elected all I hear from some of the media, from some of his surrogates, from some of his pals is, "he only said those disgusting and outrageous things to get elected." They keep saying we'll see a "different Donald Trump, a kinder, gentler Donald Trump in the Oval Office." WTF?
Imagine. You, me or anyone else in a democracy deciding that because we are really convinced it's somebody's time, that we can then use our position of power to rig that outcome. How much more tragic when that Presidential candidate may have resulted in a Democrat like Bernie Sanders. Piling on the tragedy is the likelihood that a Sanders presidency could've brought a Democratic majority in the Senate and the House.
Remember that today marks the culmination of a militarist, nationalist ritual organized by a reactionary state-backed group. While there's some criticism of the nationalism and militarism driving Remembrance Day, the organization sponsoring the red poppy campaign receives little critical attention.
We all know where the problems are. Disappointingly, the Trudeau government is using the same delaying tactics of its predecessors. Canadians won't ignore this. Veterans were a key issue in the last election and will continue to be until they are treated with respect and compassion.
Discrimination is an odd thing. It often happens when people have the best of intentions. No one wants to make a person feel bad, but the actions they take, which they believe are in the best interests of everyone, can result in unfair treatment of someone. Rights will often come into collision with one another. Working out how best to balance this is not an easy job, but it must be done.
The U.K. has deep and strong ties with Canada. Our common history, language and culture bring us together. We share membership of NATO, the G8 and the Commonwealth. Canada is a trusted ally with whom the U.K. works to address the globe's most difficult security, defence and foreign policy challenges.
There are lessons for the New Democratic Party and the Canadian Labour Congress in the stunning defeat of Hillary Clinton. The NDP should grow a backbone and learn to more vigorously fight trade agreements such as the CETA and TPP because workers in this country are suffering just as much as their American counterparts.
Canada's parliament adopted unanimously a motion to condemn all forms of Islamophobia in the country. The fact that the motion received no objection from any of the federal parties shows that the Liberal, NDP, Conservative and Bloc Quebecois members have a clear understanding that Islamophobia is a severe form of bigotry.
We need to cultivate generations of young adults who have been educated through an unbiased curriculum that has helped them understand how the world works today, and how it actually should when they take on their roles as global citizens.
I choose to keep the "Stronger Together" message as an ongoing, ever-present beacon. This house -- and by that, I mean, both the one I live in and the one that lives in me -- holds the space and admiration and compassion for anyone of integrity.
I fear that this Trump "movement" will slip its way into Canada and fuel the fire in those who have long remained quiet or polite about their shared vision for a divided community of people where only some lives matter and deserve basic human rights.
While the burn of politics and sport may continue to persist, let every individual know that they remain free to create society as they know best. And to achieve that with their own passions for the ideas they hold dear. We don't need a president for that.
Those of us who feel hurt in our hearts for our American friends and family must take time to stop engaging in this year's political circus. It is seemingly unfathomable to get this 180 degree turn of American politics out of your mind, especially when you understand the negative impact that could come of this presidency, with evidence based strictly on his divisive rhetoric. But you must. Even if only for a bit, you MUST unplug from the chaos.
