Harris County may refer to:
In principle, a sheriff is a legal official with responsibility for a "shire", i.e. county. In practice, the specific combination of legal, political and ceremonial duties of a sheriff varies greatly from country to country.
The Harris County Sheriff's Office (HCSO) is a local law enforcement agency serving the over four million citizens of Harris County, Texas, United States. It is headquartered on the first and second floors in the 1200 Baker Street Jail in Downtown Houston.
As of the 2010 U.S. Census, the county had a population of 4.1 million, making it the most populous county in Texas and the third most populous county in the United States. Its county seat is Houston. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office has approximately 3,500 employees and is the largest sheriff’s office in the state of Texas and the third largest in the nation. The number one and two largest sheriff’s offices in the nation are respectively the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department in California and the Cook County Sheriff's Office in Illinois.
The Harris County Sheriff’s Office is the primary law enforcement agency in the 1,118 square miles (2,900 km2) of unincorporated area of Harris County, serving as the equivalent of the county police for the approximately 1,071,485 people living in the unincorporated areas of the county. In Texas, sheriffs and their deputies are fully empowered peace officers with county-wide jurisdiction and thus, may legally exercise their authority in unincorporated and incorporated areas of their county; they primarily provide law enforcement services for only the unincorporated areas of a county, while yielding to municipal police or city marshals to provide law enforcement services for the incorporated areas. Sheriffs and their deputies also have statewide warrantless arrest powers for any criminal offense (except certain traffic offenses) committed within their presence or view. They also may make arrests with a warrant anywhere in the state. In an emergency, sheriffs along with mayors and district judges are empowered by state law to call forth the National Guard to preserve the peace.
A county, abbreviated Cnty. (US) or Co. (UK and Ireland), is a geographical region of a country used for administrative or other purposes, in certain modern nations. The term is derived from the Old French conté or cunté denoting a jurisdiction under the sovereignty of a count (earl) or a viscount. The modern French is comté, and its equivalents in other languages are contea, contado, comtat, condado, Grafschaft, graafschap, Gau, etc. (cf. conte, comte, conde, Graf).
When the Normans conquered England, they brought the term with them. The Saxons had already established the districts that became the historic counties of England, calling them shires (many county names derive from the name of the county town with the word "shire" added on: for example, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire). The Vikings introduced the term earl (from Old Norse, jarl) to the British Isles. Thus, "earl" and "earldom" were taken as equivalent to the continental use of "count" and "county". So the later-imported term became a synonym for the native English word scir ([ʃiːr]) or, in Modern English, shire. Since a shire was an administrative division of the kingdom, the term "county" evolved to designate an administrative division of national government in most modern uses.
Ronald Price Hickman OBE (21 October 1932 – 17 February 2011) was a South African-born, Jersey-based car designer and inventor who designed the original Lotus Elan, the Lotus Elan +2 and the Lotus Europa, as well as the Black & Decker Workmate.
Hickman was born in Greytown, Natal, South Africa, where he worked as a courthouse clerk after leaving high school. He moved to London in the 1950s where he was employed by a music publisher.
From 1954 Hickman worked for the Ford Motor Company at Dagenham first as a clay modeller and later he helped to style the 105E Ford Anglia. He became the director of Lotus Engineering in the 1960s, designing the first Lotus Europa as part of Lotus's GT40 project bid. He left Lotus in 1967.
Hickman invented the wood-and-steel foldable Workmate bench when he damaged a chair that he was using to steady a piece of wood that he was sawing when making a wardrobe. His offer of a licence for the product he developed was rejected by several companies who could not see a large market for it, so Hickman sold the benches himself to professional builders at trade shows until Black & Decker saw the light in 1973 and began producing them. By 1981 it had sold 10 million benches. More than 30 million of the benches have now been sold, and Hickman had to defend his patent numerous times against manufacturers attempting to copy it.

Watch as Harris County Sheriffs Deputies stand by as amn drowns to death. This started atop the San Jacinto Street Bridge-two Deputies were on scene and ran down to the shoreline-everyone assumed they were going in after him.Had the Deputies alerted us they were not going in after the man-several ByStander/Citizens (myself included) would ve gone in. This mans death was needless.Sheriff Ron Hickman always brags on his Hero Deputies=guess they were all off duty this day. Worse yet was hw Deputies acted afterwards. They stood on the bridge laughing and joking about the mans death. Then, knowing I had the video of the Hero Deputies in action-began to harass me and threaten to sieze my camera-even though the scene was under the control of Houston PD not Harris County Sheriff Dept.Watch for part 2 ...
This location houses the HCSO Criminal Investigations Division. As you ll see-the deputies working here have no problem violating the law-even when it places Citizens lives in danger. Its all about "their lives" not "OUR LIVES". I ve been given a list of "little known" places HCSO uses-I ll be visiting these places in the near future-more videos to come. Some odd footage I have of contacts that resulted from my documenting Harris County Deputies parking violations. In their defense-HCSO has taken care of most of the Parking Violations I ve documented in the past. I do not see fake parking passes and Police Union Decals used to get away with not paying for parking anymore-and Deputies are no longer parking by the railroad tracks. Still, you ll find one here and there cashing in on their Blue Privilege. In truth, the City or County needs to build a parking garage or something for County Employees that work in the Jail Center to use-I would support that. Lt Ronny Taylor of the Harris County Sheriff's Office talks about preventing inmate escapes at the Harris County Jail. Brandi Grissom and Caleb Bryant Miller report.
The suspect in the slaying of Texas sheriff's Deputy Darren Goforth was found mentally incompetent in 2012 to stand trial on a felony assault charge, a prosecutor said Monday. About three years ago, Shannon J. Miles was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after fighting a man at an Austin homeless shelter over the TV remote control, said Joe Frederick, a prosecutor in Travis County, Texas. Miles kicked and punched the victim, injuring his face, back and head, Frederick said. The deadly weapon used in the assault was his hands. Before trial, Miles was found mentally incompetent and sent to North Texas State Hospital in Vernon for six months, Frederick said. He was found to be competent and sent back to Travis County for trial, but prosecutors could not find the assault v...
I see MotorCycle Riders stopped for obstructed tag on a regular basis. Yet when the Sheriff dept does it-nothing happens. EVERY POLICE UNIT ON THE ROAD SHOULD IDENTIFIABLE in case of an emergency or a Citizen wants to make a complaint. Harris County Sheriff MC Deputies obscure all identifying numbers/plates on their MotorCycles. This is not acceptable-and you or I would be ticketed for it. Comments/Concerns/Compliments....
