Lawrence "Larry" Brown, Jr. (born September 19, 1947) is a former professional American football player in the National Football League (NFL) who played running back for the Washington Redskins from 1969 to 1976.
Raised in nearby Pittsburgh, he attended Schenley High School, Dodge City Community College, and Kansas State University, his original interest being in baseball. He later developed an overriding interest in football.
Feature-length film documentary directed by Emmy-Award winning director Gary Hawkins. Other than the dramatic shorts within this doc, which were shot by other DP's, I was the DP and cameraman for the doc, which won several awards for best cinematography

If Allen Iverson could have it all to do over again, he would have done everything the same.
All of it.
Except one thing.
He would have listened to Larry Brown.
Iverson and Brown had an often contentious relationship during their seven years together with the 76ers.
Brown was old-school and buttoned-down. Iverson was hip-hop and defiant.
They accomplished some great things together. But not at first.
On the day Iverson was selected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the 11-time all-star expressed profound regret at the way he defied Brown, who preceded him in the Hall of Fame by 10 years.
“I don’t regret nothing,” Iverson said at a downtown Houston hotel after getting the Hall of Fame news. “Like nothing in my life. I love being who I am. I love the person that I am. I feel comfortable in my skin.
“But if I could have a wish as an athlete? I wish I would have bought in to what [Brown] was trying to give me all along (instead of) just being defiant. Being a certified ass---- for nothing. When all he wanted was the best for me.
“And I didn’t take constructive criticism the way I should have. You know what I mean?
“To me, in my eyes, he’s the best coach ever. To me. You know what I mean? And I didn’t take what God was giving me the right way. God sent him to me, and I was defiant at that time.”
Iverson played for Johnny Davis as a rookie in 1996-97 and then for Brown for the next six years.
He was an all-star all six years, led the 76ers to the NBA finals in 2001, was MVP in 2001, was All-Star game MVP in 2001 (“Where’s my coach?”) and led the NBA in scoring three of his six years under Brown.
“Once I bought in and caught up to what I was supposed to know, that’s when I became the MVP,” Iverson said. “That’s when it went from just a talented player to the best player on Earth.”
Brown went on to coach the Pistons, Knicks and Bobcats before moving back to the college ranks in 2012 and coaching Southern Methodist, where he remains.
Iverson’s Georgetown coach, John Thompson, was there Monday but Brown wasn’t at Iverson’s press conference, and Iverson hadn’t spoken to him yet.
But he promised he would soon.
“We going to talk,” he said. “Trust me. But I’m going to tell you exactly why I haven’t spoken to him yet. I know I have to speak to him today because it’s official. So I have to speak to him. But the emotional part of me, you know what I mean? Is why I haven’t spoken to him yet.
“Because I know that there won’t be no conversation, there will just be crying. I know it. As soon as I hear his voice. I already know it.”

Larry Brown (author)
Larry Brown (July 9, 1951 – November 24, 2004) was an American novelist, non-fiction and short story writer. He won numerous awards including the Mississippi Institute of Arts and Letters award for fiction, the Lila Wallace-Readers Digest Award, and Mississippi's Governor's Award For Excellence in the Arts. He was also the first two-time winner of the Southern Book Award for Fiction.
His notable works include Dirty Work, Father and Son, Joe and Big Bad Love. The latter was adapted for a 2001 film of the same name, starring Debra Winger and Arliss Howard. In 2013 a film adaptation of Larry Brown's Joe was released, featuring Nicolas Cage.
Independent filmmaker Gary Hawkins has directed an award-winning documentary of Brown's life and work in The Rough South of Larry Brown (2011).
Life and writing
Larry Brown was born on July 9, 1951 and grew up near Oxford, Mississippi. He graduated from high school in Oxford, but did not want to go to college, opting instead for a stint in the Marines. Many years later, he took a creative writing class from the University of Mississippi. Brown worked at a small stove company before joining the city fire department in Oxford.

Iverson and Brown had an often contentious relationship during their seven years together with the 76ers.
Brown was old-school and buttoned-down. Iverson was hip-hop and defiant.
They accomplished some great things together. But not at first.
On the day Iverson was selected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, the 11-time all-star expressed profound regret at the way he defied Brown, who preceded him in the Hall of Fame by 10 years.
“I don’t regret nothing,” Iverson said at a downtown Houston hotel after getting the Hall of Fame news. “Like nothing in my life. I love being who I am. I love the person that I am. I feel comfortable in my skin.
“But if I could have a wish as an athlete? I wish I would have bought in to what [Brown] was trying to give me all along (instead of) just being defiant. Being a certified ass---- for nothing. When all he wanted was the best for me.
“And I didn’t take constructive criticism the way I should have. You know what I mean?
“To me, in my eyes, he’s the best coach ever. To me. You know what I mean? And I didn’t take what God was giving me the right way. God sent him to me, and I was defiant at that time.”
Iverson played for Johnny Davis as a rookie in 1996-97 and then for Brown for the next six years.
He was an all-star all six years, led the 76ers to the NBA finals in 2001, was MVP in 2001, was All-Star game MVP in 2001 (“Where’s my coach?”) and led the NBA in scoring three of his six years under Brown.
“Once I bought in and caught up to what I was supposed to know, that’s when I became the MVP,” Iverson said. “That’s when it went from just a talented player to the best player on Earth.”
Brown went on to coach the Pistons, Knicks and Bobcats before moving back to the college ranks in 2012 and coaching Southern Methodist, where he remains.
Iverson’s Georgetown coach, John Thompson, was there Monday but Brown wasn’t at Iverson’s press conference, and Iverson hadn’t spoken to him yet.
But he promised he would soon.
“We going to talk,” he said. “Trust me. But I’m going to tell you exactly why I haven’t spoken to him yet. I know I have to speak to him today because it’s official. So I have to speak to him. But the emotional part of me, you know what I mean? Is why I haven’t spoken to him yet.
“Because I know that there won’t be no conversation, there will just be crying. I know it. As soon as I hear his voice. I already know it.”

Boston Blackie is a fictional character created by author Jack Boyle (October 19, 1881 – October 1928). Blackie, a jewel thief and safecracker in Boyle's stories, became a detective in adaptations for films, radio and television—an "enemy to those who make him an enemy, friend to those who have no friend."
Actor Chester Morris was the best-known Blackie, playing the character in movies and on radio in the 1940s. Boston Blackie is the role for which Morris is best remembered.
Jack Boyle's stories first appeared in the early 20th century. "The Price of Principle" was a short story in the July 1914 issue of The American Magazine. Boyle's character also turned up inCosmopolitan. In 1917, Redbook published the novelette "Boston Blackie’s Mary", and the magazine brought the character back with "The Heart of the Lily" (February 1921). Boyle's stories were collected in the book Boston Blackie (1919), which was reprinted in 1979 by Gregg Press.
The Boston Blackie radio series, also starring Morris, began June 23, 1944, on NBC as a summer replacement for Amos 'n' Andy. Sponsored by Rinso, the series continued until September 15 of that year. Unlike the concurrent films, Blackie had a steady romantic interest in the radio show: Lesley Woods appeared as Blackie's girlfriend Mary Wesley. Richard Lane played Inspector Faraday. Harlow Wilcox was the show's announcer.
On April 11, 1945, a new version of the radio show premiered. Richard Kollmar portrayed Blackie in a radio series syndicated by Frederick Ziv to Mutual and other network outlets. Over 200 episodes of this series were produced between 1944 and October 25, 1950. Other sponsors included Lifebuoy Soap, Champagne Velvet beer and R&H; beer. While investigating mysteries, Blackie invariably encountered harebrained Police Inspector Farraday (Maurice Tarplin) and always solved the mystery to Farraday's amazement. Initially, friction surfaced in the relationship between Blackie and Farraday, but as the series continued, Farraday recognized Blackie's talents and requested assistance. Blackie dated Mary Wesley (Jan Miner), and for the first half of the series, his best pal Shorty was always on hand. The humorless Farraday was on the receiving end of Blackie's bad puns and word play.
The old-time radio era, sometimes referred to as the Golden Age of Radio, refers to a period of radio programming in the United States lasting from the proliferation of radio broadcasting in the early 1920s until the 1950s, when television superseded radio as the medium of choice for scripted programming and radio shifted to playing popular music. During this period, when radio was dominant and filled with a variety of formats and genres, people regularly tuned into their favorite radio programs. According to a 1947 C. E. Hoopersurvey, 82 out of 100 Americans were found to be radio listeners.
The broadcasts of live drama, comedy, music and news that characterize the Golden Age of Radio had a precedent in the Théâtrophone, commercially introduced in Paris in 1890 and available as late as 1932. It allowed subscribers to eavesdrop on live stage performances and hear news reports by means of a network of telephone lines. The development of radio eliminated the wires and subscription charges from this concept.
On Christmas Eve 1906, Reginald Fessenden is said to have broadcast the first radio program, consisting of some violin playing and passages from the Bible. While Fessenden's role as an inventor and early radio experimenter is not in dispute, several contemporary radio researchers have questioned whether the Christmas Eve broadcast took place, or whether the date was in fact several weeks earlier. The first apparent published reference to the event was made in 1928 by H.P. Davis, Vice President of Westinghouse, in a lecture given atHarvard University. In 1932 Fessenden cited the Christmas Eve 1906 broadcast event in a letter he wrote to Vice President S.M. Kinter of Westinghouse. Fessenden's wife Helen recounts the broadcast in her book Fessenden: Builder of Tomorrows (1940), eight years after Fessenden's death. The issue of whether the 1906 Fessenden broadcast actually happened is discussed in Halper and Sterling's article "Seeking the Truth About Fessenden" and also in James O'Neal's essays. An annotated argument supporting Fessenden as the world's first radio broadcaster was offered in 2006 by Dr. John S. Belrose, Radioscientist Emeritus at the Communications Research Centre Canada, in his essay "Fessenden's 1906 Christmas Eve broadcast.

Boston Blackie is a fictional character created by author Jack Boyle (October 19, 1881 – October 1928). Blackie, a jewel thief and safecracker in Boyle's stories, became a detective in adaptations for films, radio and television—an "enemy to those who make him an enemy, friend to those who have no friend."
Actor Chester Morris was the best-known Blackie, playing the character in movies and on radio in the 1940s. Boston Blackie is the role for which Morris is best remembered.
Jack Boyle's stories first appeared in the early 20th century. "The Price of Principle" was a short story in the July 1914 issue of The American Magazine. Boyle's character also turned up inCosmopolitan. In 1917, Redbook published the novelette "Boston Blackie’s Mary", and the magazine brought the character back with "The Heart of the Lily" (February 1921). Boyle's stories were collected in the book Boston Blackie (1919), which was reprinted in 1979 by Gregg Press.
The Boston Blackie radio series, also starring Morris, began June 23, 1944, on NBC as a summer replacement for Amos 'n' Andy. Sponsored by Rinso, the series continued until September 15 of that year. Unlike the concurrent films, Blackie had a steady romantic interest in the radio show: Lesley Woods appeared as Blackie's girlfriend Mary Wesley. Richard Lane played Inspector Faraday. Harlow Wilcox was the show's announcer.
On April 11, 1945, a new version of the radio show premiered. Richard Kollmar portrayed Blackie in a radio series syndicated by Frederick Ziv to Mutual and other network outlets. Over 200 episodes of this series were produced between 1944 and October 25, 1950. Other sponsors included Lifebuoy Soap, Champagne Velvet beer and R&H; beer. While investigating mysteries, Blackie invariably encountered harebrained Police Inspector Farraday (Maurice Tarplin) and always solved the mystery to Farraday's amazement. Initially, friction surfaced in the relationship between Blackie and Farraday, but as the series continued, Farraday recognized Blackie's talents and requested assistance. Blackie dated Mary Wesley (Jan Miner), and for the first half of the series, his best pal Shorty was always on hand. The humorless Farraday was on the receiving end of Blackie's bad puns and word play.
The old-time radio era, sometimes referred to as the Golden Age of Radio, refers to a period of radio programming in the United States lasting from the proliferation of radio broadcasting in the early 1920s until the 1950s, when television superseded radio as the medium of choice for scripted programming and radio shifted to playing popular music. During this period, when radio was dominant and filled with a variety of formats and genres, people regularly tuned into their favorite radio programs. According to a 1947 C. E. Hoopersurvey, 82 out of 100 Americans were found to be radio listeners.
The broadcasts of live drama, comedy, music and news that characterize the Golden Age of Radio had a precedent in the Théâtrophone, commercially introduced in Paris in 1890 and available as late as 1932. It allowed subscribers to eavesdrop on live stage performances and hear news reports by means of a network of telephone lines. The development of radio eliminated the wires and subscription charges from this concept.
On Christmas Eve 1906, Reginald Fessenden is said to have broadcast the first radio program, consisting of some violin playing and passages from the Bible. While Fessenden's role as an inventor and early radio experimenter is not in dispute, several contemporary radio researchers have questioned whether the Christmas Eve broadcast took place, or whether the date was in fact several weeks earlier. The first apparent published reference to the event was made in 1928 by H.P. Davis, Vice President of Westinghouse, in a lecture given atHarvard University. In 1932 Fessenden cited the Christmas Eve 1906 broadcast event in a letter he wrote to Vice President S.M. Kinter of Westinghouse. Fessenden's wife Helen recounts the broadcast in her book Fessenden: Builder of Tomorrows (1940), eight years after Fessenden's death. The issue of whether the 1906 Fessenden broadcast actually happened is discussed in Halper and Sterling's article "Seeking the Truth About Fessenden" and also in James O'Neal's essays. An annotated argument supporting Fessenden as the world's first radio broadcaster was offered in 2006 by Dr. John S. Belrose, Radioscientist Emeritus at the Communications Research Centre Canada, in his essay "Fessenden's 1906 Christmas Eve broadcast.

James Harman albums are always well received by myself, so it was with pleasure that I received this album to review. The album is taken from Recordings that James did between 1984-87 for Bob Rivera, with lots of his friends joining James and his band. The first album of these recordings was issued on LP back in 1988 with the subsequence CD release in 1997 on Cannonball Records, titled "Extra Napkins: Strictly the Blues Vol.1." This new album on Cannonball is Vol.2 of these recordings and all the tracks were unissued until now. There will also be a Vol.3 apparently. The album comprises of 14 tracks, half of them written by James.
"Mo' Na'kins, Please #2" opens up the album with James giving a quick burst of harp and Junior Watson adding some very melodic guitar, James then takes us on a joyful romp that also has Junior playing a splendid solo, Larry Taylor on Acoustic Bass keeps everything swingin' with some fine bass playing. James in his sleeve notes calls this opening number the classic 1950's Memphis Guitar and electric harp band number. The album on a whole has this swingin' chuggin' melodic feel to it, which is demonstrated well on "Too Much Family" which has Hollywood Fats playing some stunning guitar aided by Stephen Taylor Hodges on drums. "Icepick Boogie" is a tribute to BB King and Little Milton, Kid Ramos is the featured guitarist and plays some mean rhythmic guitar while the band swing along at a crackin' pace with a horn section joining in. "Shim Sham Shimmy" has a lively party feel to it and the band certainly sound like they are partying, Kid Ramos and Hollywood Fats joined forces on the guitar front. "Dirty Work At The Crossroads" has a more down-home feel to it, James gives a first class reading of the Gatemouth Brown song with some sterling work from Kid Ramos. "(Feel Like) Messin' Up" is a tribute to Five Royals and has a real tortured vocal from James as he is joined by 6 other singers to pull off a great performance of this bluesy do-wop song. My favourite track on this CD is Sonny Boy Williams's "The Goat" which has some tremendous Acoustic harp blowing from James against some fine piano playing from Gene Taylor as Hollywood Fats and Kid Ramos do a faultless copy of Robert, Jr and Muddy Waters parts in the song. "Jake Head Boogie" sees James and Kid Ramos alone on this Lightnin' Hopkins tune. Another version of "Mo' Na'kins, Please #1" which sounds raw and dirty and what you might have heard live at the end of the forties, finishes this rather good display of swingin' Texas, and Memphis 50's style blues. Why these recording have not been put on CD earlier is beyond me, these recordings are first class and show a band aided by friends at the top of their playing careers, after playing night after night on the road honing their talents to perfection. James is also a first class song writer and the self composed songs on this fine album are great examples how to write very good blues songs in these modern times.

James Harman Band - Mo' Na'kins Please! Strictly The Blues Vol. 2 (1999) Album
James Harman albums are always well received by myself, so it was with pleasure that I received this album to review. The album is taken from Recordings that James did between 1984-87 for Bob Rivera, with lots of his friends joining James and his band. The first album of these recordings was issued on LP back in 1988 with the subsequence CD release in 1997 on Cannonball Records, titled "Extra Napkins: Strictly the Blues Vol.1." This new album on Cannonball is Vol.2 of these recordings and all the tracks were unissued until now. There will also be a Vol.3 apparently. The album comprises of 14 tracks, half of them written by James.
"Mo' Na'kins, Please #2" opens up the album with James giving a quick burst of harp and Junior Watson adding some very melodic guitar, James then takes us on a joyful romp that also has Junior playing a splendid solo, Larry Taylor on Acoustic Bass keeps everything swingin' with some fine bass playing. James in his sleeve notes calls this opening number the classic 1950's Memphis Guitar and electric harp band number. The album on a whole has this swingin' chuggin' melodic feel to it, which is demonstrated well on "Too Much Family" which has Hollywood Fats playing some stunning guitar aided by Stephen Taylor Hodges on drums. "Icepick Boogie" is a tribute to BB King and Little Milton, Kid Ramos is the featured guitarist and plays some mean rhythmic guitar while the band swing along at a crackin' pace with a horn section joining in. "Shim Sham Shimmy" has a lively party feel to it and the band certainly sound like they are partying, Kid Ramos and Hollywood Fats joined forces on the guitar front. "Dirty Work At The Crossroads" has a more down-home feel to it, James gives a first class reading of the Gatemouth Brown song with some sterling work from Kid Ramos. "(Feel Like) Messin' Up" is a tribute to Five Royals and has a real tortured vocal from James as he is joined by 6 other singers to pull off a great performance of this bluesy do-wop song.
