Perceived control (PC) can be defined as the belief that one sees he or she has control over their internal states, behaviors and the environment surrounding him or her. There are two important dimensions: (1) whether the object of control is located in the past or the future and (2) whether the object of control is over outcome, behavior, or process.

Khan Academy is a non-profit educational organization created in 2006 by educator Salman Khan with the aim of providing a free, world-class education for anyone, anywhere. The organization produces short lectures in the form of YouTube videos. In addition to micro lectures, the organization's website features practice exercises and tools for educators. All resources are available for free to anyone around the world. The main language of the website is English, but the content is also available in other languages.
The founder of the organization, Salman Khan, was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States to immigrant parents from Bangladesh and India. After earning three degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (a BS in mathematics, a BS in electrical engineering and computer science, and an MEng in electrical engineering and computer science), he pursued an MBA from Harvard Business School.
In late 2004, Khan began tutoring his cousin Nadia who needed help with math using Yahoo!'s Doodle notepad. When other relatives and friends sought similar help, he decided that it would be more practical to distribute the tutorials on YouTube. The videos' popularity and the testimonials of appreciative students prompted Khan to quit his job in finance as a hedge fund analyst at Connective Capital Management in 2009, and focus on the tutorials (then released under the moniker "Khan Academy") full-time.

The Theory of Planned Behaviour is built out of a number of constructs. The first construct is the attitude towards the act or behaviour. That is, an individual’s belief of whether a certain behaviour or act makes a positive or negative contribution to that person’s life. A second construct is called subjective norm. This construct focuses on everything around the individual. In other words his or her social network, cultural norms, group beliefs and so on. A third construct is called perceived behavioural control. This construct refers to a person’s belief of how easy or hard it is to display a certain behaviour or act in a certain way. We can use the theory to predict that if a person has a positive attitude towards an act or behaviour, and they are surrounded by favourable social nor...

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – If terror strikes increase in the United States, some consumers will keep buying as they always have, but others will withdraw from certain markets to minimize their risk. “The key issue we’ve identified is, ‘Do you feel like you can control the odds of becoming a victim, should a terrorist attack occur?’” said Steven S. Posavac of Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University, one of three authors of the article “Living with Terrorism or Withdrawing in Terror: Perceived Control and Consumer Avoidance.” It was co-written with Michal Herzenstein of the University of Delaware and Sharon Horsky of Bar-llan University in Israel, the article was published in the July/August 2015 issue of Journal of Consumer Behaviour. by Thomas Keenan Technology that identifies you by something you are is showing up in e-passports, laptop login screens, smart firearms and even consumer products, like the iPhone. Current generation systems generally use static biometric features, such as fingerprints, iris scans and facial recognition, either measured directly or mediated through a device, such as a smartphone. We are on the cusp of a revolution that will usher in dynamic (e.g. gestural, heart rhythm, gait analysis) and chemical (e.g. DNA, body odor, perspiration) biometrics. There will also be hybrid technologies, such as the Nokias vibrating magnetic ink tattoos (US Patent 8, 766, 784) and the password pill from Proteus Digital Health. Biometrics will also play an increasingly significant role as one of the factors i...

How could you build a robot that really felt pain, instead of just displaying avoidance reactions? Why does red look red to us, rather than looking green? Questions like this remain mysterious if you take the classic view that sensations are the kinds of things that can be generated by physico-chemical mechanisms in the brain, or in a robot. The "sensorimotor approach" on the other hand suggests that it is a mistake to think that sensations are the kind of things that can be generated. Instead the approach claims that we should think of sensations as ways of interacting with the environment. The quality of a sensory experience is then constituted by the laws of "sensorimotor contingency" that link voluntary actions to the resulting changes in sensory input. I shall illustrate how takin...
