Usage

Account Coordinators for the Wikipedia Library are: Nikkimaria and The Interior will be approving accounts and collecting email addresses.

JSTOR is one of the largest and most reputable journal archives in the world. This page is to facilitate signups for a pilot collaboration between the Wikimedia Foundation and JSTOR. This pilot provides free access to JSTOR's complete archive to 100 500 active editors for one year, in order to better support the most active and experienced authors of the encyclopedia. Active through December 2015. See blog post.

The content set currently available to the Wikipedia editors includes all of JSTOR's archival journal collections (now about ~2,000 journals) and the 19th Century British Pamphlets collection (26,000 pamphlets), but the books (~20,000) and the current journals (more recent issues for ~300 titles) are not available in the Wikipedia pilot. TWL is working with JSTOR to potentially expand the package available to editors.

Note that around a hundred universities provide free alumni access – please check if this applies to you!

To get access[edit]

  1. You will need to be an active editor. If you haven't been particularly active lately, preference may be given to another request.
  2. You will need to have a confirmed email address, and be willing to provide this address to someone from the Foundation and to JSTOR (unlike Wikipedia, JSTOR access requires email). The Interior is the current contact.
  3. You will need to sign up here, with access given out in the order of signups. Please sign up even if the 500 person limit has been reached, so that overall interest can be measured and we can get a waitlist started. Before you post a request, please check on this page to see whether you already have access through your local public library and/or educational institution.

Please be aware[edit]

  • If you are given access but fail to register an account within a reasonable time, you may be asked to relinquish it to another requester.
  • There is no minimum usage requirement, but if you're not really using your account and you're willing to give it to another person on the list, please let the Foundation contact know.
  • You will need to abide by the JSTOR Terms of Service, and should be comfortable with the fine print in the JSTOR Privacy Policy.

Requirements[edit]

  • You do not have free online access to these JSTOR products through your local library or university
  • You have your preferences enabled to receive email messages on English Wikipedia or on your home wiki linked from your application; (see Special:Preferences)
  • You have an account that is a minimum of six months old
  • You have a minimum of 1000 edits to the encyclopedia
  • You are active in content generation, research, or verification work

If you don't quite meet the experience requirements but think you would still be a strong candidate for access, feel free to apply and you may be considered.

  1. KJRehberg (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I am a frequent copyeditor and fact checker for as many Wikipedia articles as I can get my hands on. Having access to JSTOR would be a great resource to correct and cite even more articles, including those I have written myself. Thank you. KJRehberg (talk) 04:00, 8 October 2015 (UTC)

  2. Epolk (talk · contribs) I have been an editor for a decade. Per X!'s Tools I have over 17,000 edits, around 14,000 on unique pages. As the number of articles on Wikipedia have reached a critical mass, I have moved from creating and proofreading articles to creating citations for articles. The publicly available sources for searching scholarly works usually point to an abstract for an article or a pay site (e.g. JSTOR) so my ability to provide accurate and complete citations are limited. As for my areas of interest, they tend toward history and the sciences, especially zoology as this area seems to be most in need of expansion and citation of sources. @Nikkimaria: Sorry about that; I have to admit it doesn’t give me access to as many journals as I had first thought. I’m willing to give my account away or cancel it if I have to. CielProfond (talk) 13:20, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
  4. JmCor (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email). I have been using JSTOR for about two years, under their "Shelf" system, which is limited to a maximum of three items at a time. I am mostly interested in the history of science and would use JSTOR to access articles in that area. JmCor (talk) 17:56, 12 October 2015 (UTC)

  5. MrPenguin20 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Mostly work on areas relating to politics and history, with a specific focus on Britain & the Arab world. That being said, my range is extremely broad. Whilst I previously enjoyed access through my university, the program doesn't extend to alumni. Academic sources naturally often provide information which can't be accessed freely elsewhere. Many thanks. MrPenguin20 (talk) 00:56, 14 October 2015 (UTC)

I've requested access through OUP, but I'm thinking that I may also need full access to JSTOR; my university unfortunately doesn't have full access, especially for some of the Latin-American related articles I can potentially use. 9. allixpeeke (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email)), I have been active on Wikipedia for over ten years (with over 5,000 edits), on Wikiquote for over twenty-one months (with almost 14,000 edits), and on Wikidata for over twenty-one months (with over 1,000 edits).  I also edit Commons and Wikisource from time to time (and I've been known to irregularly edit Wiktionary, Wikinews, Simple, and Wikibooks, among others).

My main focus on Wikipedia has been political philosophy, while my focus tends to be broader on Wikiquote, where I've done the majority of my editing.  As an example of something I'm currently working on on Wikiquote, I've been recently focused on figures from Colonial America.  Although I've started with Maryland, I've designs eventually cover all of the major figures of that era from all of the America colonies.  Thus, so far, I've created pages for Lord Baltimores George Calvert and Cecil Calvert; governors Leonard Calvert, Thomas Greene, William Stone, Josias Fendall, and Thomas Notley; and rebels William Davyes and John Pate.  (This is by no means to imply that Colonial America is my sole focus on Wikiquote, of course; I've created pages as diverse as the Fibonacci sequence, Jefferson in Paris, honey (the food), Honey (the band), Lady Godiva, Monday, Mother Nature, and police state, just to name only a very few.)

Currently, I use a combination of the books I've accumulated over the years and the Internet in order to conduct research, both for Wikipedia and for Wikiquote, although I did have experience with JSTOR back in my college years.  It would certainly prove useful for my various endeavours on the various Wiki projects.

    Thanks for the consideration,

  11. Kevin Gorman (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) This is the first long chunk of time I've not had jstor access directly through academia, and it's been a killer. It makes it hard to write articles, verifying facts already present in WP articles that are reliant on jstor indexed journals in existing articles harder, and editing other existing articles harder. Not having jstor access makes many aspects of WP life significantly harder. Kevin Gorman (talk) 00:31, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

  15. Fuhghettaboutit (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I am a regular contributor, with about 87,000 edits (including deleted). I write on a variety of subjects (though lately I've been working on a variety of bird articles, and JSTOR content has actually helped me in the past in this area): I've had 10 articles, predominantly written by me, achieve good status and 3 have been promoted as featured articles – with a few in the pipeline. I often use research access to help others with their writing efforts here, as well as to check sources for verification. The fields covered are principally in the arts: literature, music, science and films - which interests started by the discovery of many of my ancestors who were talented in these areas. I work mostly in military history at the moment, which started the series of articles I've worked on via an article request for a German logician called Heinrich Scholz, which ultimately led to what I'm doing now. The work I'm doing now is detailed, technical and difficult, particularly trying to track salient information, separating hearsay and oft repeated information from fact. Mostly I get information from Google Book, speaking to people via email, library books, and German and American archives, but information is sparse, by the simple fact that the work was hidden by nature, e.g. German cryptology. Access to JStor would help on this, since I bump into all time, particularly today, when I was looking for information on German Naval Enigma. This is the sort of article I want to read, [ENIGMA: SEAHORSE AND OTHER KRIEGSMARINE CIPHER BLUNDERS] and also several articles within this list [Table of contents]. scope_creep (talk) 13:58, 19 May 2016 (UTC)

  34. Lourdes (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I have created 26 articles, including 4 GAs and 5 DYKs and working on Featured Content now. This would be really helpful in researching. Lourdes 01:31, 31 August 2016 (UTC)
  35. DoctorWho42 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email), I've created about 350 articles and have 3 DYKs. While the subjects vary, I would be more interested in writing more articles on literature. Since graduating from CSUMB, I've been asking random friends with institutional access to help with research, buying back issues of old magazines for critical reception via AbeBooks (If or Galaxy Science Fiction) or cannibalizing old citations from research papers to bolster new articles, i.e. The Falling Astronauts, etc. Given much of what I need is only available via interlibrary loan or beyond paywalls, I feel like this would help my research a great deal.--🎆🌎🎼🎺🐦 07:39, 5 September 2016 (UTC)
  36. Ynhockey (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) – I have been editing Wikipedia on the subject of Israeli history for years, and JSTOR inevitably crops up in this topic area when looking for academic resources. I'd like to be access this resource for further improve articles on Israel's history. —Ynhockey (Talk) 08:19, 11 September 2016 (UTC)
  37. Coin945 (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) My specialty is educational video games, and I think this resource would be invaluable--Coin945 (talk) 12:47, 11 September 2016 (UTC)
  38. Haploidavey (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email)Active in ancient Roman (and sometimes ancient Greek) social and religious history, though not exclusively. Most of what I need is available on JSTOR but is restricted by paywall, and by the strictly limited allowance offered under the "shelf-space" program. I live in a small town, in Derbyshire. My local library is, quite frankly, lousy. Haploidavey (talk) 18:16, 11 September 2016 (UTC)
  39. KAVEBEAR (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email)) Active in Hawaiian and Polynesia history, though not exclusively. I have created two FAs, 9 GA and countless DYKS. I write historical biographies and have readily used JSTOR in the past when I could but I no longer have free access to the site. I put researching and the best reliable sources above all so using JSTOR would help me create great articles. KAVEBEAR (talk) 17:29, 27 September 2016 (UTC)

  42. Pirrica (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email), I have been editing Wikipedia since 2011, expecially as WikiGnome. I'm interested in archaeology and history of art and the access to JSTOR could help me in RL in order to prepare guided tour in my town. --Pirrica (talk) 20:02, 16 October 2016 (UTC)
  43. Banjo (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) 59k+ edits and Sysop at gl.wikipedia. Other than admin dutires, I focus my work both in translations/adaptations and improvement of GA/FA to galician wiki and improving already created content and article referencing in galician wiki. Lately focused on history related articles, but I usually work on a vast array of topics. Access to these resources would be really helpful in these tasks and in improving the general referencing of gl.wiki articles. Banjo (talk) 19:15, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

  45. Nishidani (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I intend writing one article a day for the next year or so in order to cover the 500 odd tribes of aboriginal Australia with the one format, completely overhauling what little has been done, while creating over 200 tribes I calculate still have no adequate wiki page. I intend to restrict my sourcing to academic works. I've done about 30 articles over the last month, a list can be found here, cp.Jaburara Karajarri etc. Jstor appears to have many articles I require.Nishidani (talk) 15:00, 9 November 2016 (UTC)
  46. VinceLeibowitz (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I am working on improving various articles related to Texas history as much of the Texas project has a number of unsourced articles as well as articles with incomplete information. JSTOR is the only database that indexes articles from several journals of the South and Texas that cover various detailed aspects of county and state history, much better than the main online resources currently existing. Not avaliable at my local library.
  47. InformationvsInjustice (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I have been a long time editor and user, however, I recently committed myself to be a more active and more involved member of the community. I have joined the CGR Project. Along with other contributions, I'm overhauling the Romulus and Remus article. I have access to the LCL, which is great for primary sources. However, I come across so many articles of interest that are seriously lacking in modern authorities and my efforts routinely point me toward sources on JSTOR. Sometimes I can find a work-around, but it would improve my edits and make contributing so much easier. Informata ob Iniquitatum (talk) 00:53, 18 November 2016 (UTC)

Renewal[edit]

Please post here if your JSTOR access has expired and you would like to renew.

  1. Daniele.tampieri (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email). As many for users above, even my account belongs to the first 100 accounts granted with a Jstor access. And like them, I would be grateful if my full access rights could be restored. As the the Coordinators can check, I am quite active on Wikipedia, currently contributing to several entries on Mathematics, Physics and Electronics engineering: I am asking thus be granted again the access to such an important and complete source in order to rise steadily the quality and reliability standards of my contributions to Wikipedia.Daniele.tampieri (talk) 18:23, 3 August 2016 (UTC) It works again. Many thanks to you and to JSTOR crew! BEST, Daniele.tampieri (talk) 08:50, 28 August 2016 (UTC)
  2. Kmhkmh (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email)Similar case to the ones right above, I'm mainly active on en.wp (> 10,000 edits) and de.wp (>40,000 edits). I've been using JSTOR for the past several years for Wikipedia and it has been an extremely valuable tool. I think in the past the account was extended automatically, however now it seems to have expired and I'd like to request a renewal if possible.--Kmhkmh (talk) 09:23, 4 August 2016 (UTC) update: There was no notofication or message but like in Waynejayes's case it suddenly started working again - thanks --Kmhkmh (talk) 09:40, 16 August 2016 (UTC)
  3. Carlstak (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Ditto the above. I've made over 11,000 edits on English WP, and have been active in content generation, research, and verification work. My WP access to JSTOR seems to have expired too, and I'd like to have renewed access. Carlstak (talk) 19:09, 4 August 2016 (UTC)
  4. Waynejayes (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email). Me too, I would love to have my Jstor access back, it was so useful in writing articles. Working again, thanks Wayne Jayes (talk) 12:35, 12 August 2016 (UTC)
  5. Ancheta Wis (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) I think my case is a not-yet-expired account which wasn't working last week, but which now works again after a 'renewal'. --Ancheta Wis   (talk | contribs) 02:20, 15 August 2016 (UTC)
  6. Shabidoo (talk · contribs · central auth · count · email) Have used jstor for articles on religion/atheism, politics and linguistics. Hope to renew it again. Shabidoo | Talk 15:44, 24 August 2016 (UTC) Working again, thanks
