Search for Matt Leveson enters Day Five

The search for missing man Matthew Leveson will enter its fifth day this morning.

Police are expected to expand their search area at Waterfall, in the Royal National Park, after there was no breakthrough on Sunday.

Family and friends of Matthew, who disappeared in September 2007, have spent days watching police using a digger rip through undergrowth and scour bush for remains.

The small team have combed the uneven ground covered with fallen trees using surveying equipment but so far have not unearthed any trace of Mr Leveson.

Investigators were led there by Mr Atkins, Mr Leveson’s former lover, who was in 2009 acquitted of his murder.

For nine years he had refused to tell the family what had happened to Mr Leveson but relented after being forced to give evidence at a NSW coronial inquest where he admitted to lying to police and being offered conditional immunity from prosecution.

Gable Tostee breaks his silence

After two long years, Gable Tostee has broken his silence about the night Warriena Wright died.

Given the reaction to his 60 Minutes interview, however, the 30-year-old Gold Coaster may have been better to have maintained it.

It didn’t help that he was paid $150,000 for the tell-all, which further infuriated viewers.

The Supermoon is on its way

The largest supermoon in over 70 years will be visible in the night sky tonight.

It’s so rare that more than 60,000 people have indicated they will be heading down to the city’s beach to watch the supermoon rise above the ocean.

The last time this took place was when the Cold War was just beginning to get heated, with supermoons linked to everything from earthquakes to political catastrophe.

But people in Sydney and Melbourne may be in for a disappointment — Fairfax reports heavy clouding is expected in both cities this evening, which aren’t ideal.

The moonrise will be at 7.07pm in Sydney, 7.40pm in Melbourne, 5.51pm in Brisbane and 6.33pm in Perth.

Happy moon-viewing!

Deadly quake hits NZ’S South Island

A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake has rocked New Zealand’s South Island, triggering a tsunami and strong aftershocks, and killing at least two people.

The US Geological Survey said the quake hit just after midnight Monday (10pm Sunday AEDT) near Hanmer Springs, about 90 kilometres from Christchurch, which was devastated five years ago by a 6.3 tremor.

The tsunami arrived in the north-eastern coast less than two hours later, with irregular waves of up to two metres being reported in Kaikoura. Authorities say bigger waves are expected.
