Ace filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnana in conversation with Rajya Sabha TV anchor Syed Mohd Irfan.
It was his interest in drama, which lead Adoor Gopalakrishnan to take up the direction course in 1962 at the FTII at Pune, thinking that it would help him to enhance his skills in stage productions. But there he found that stage plays and cinema are entirely different mediums.
Notable 'literary' films like Neelakuyil, Chemeen and Oolavum Theeravum produced before Adoor's first film, but all had the regular ingredients of popular cinema, highly dramatic plot and song-dance sequences. Swayamvaram was a rejection of all these populist formulas. This radically different film was reluctantly taken by the mass. Only a minority eagerly waiting for a change in this powerful medium welcomed the film.
Apart from his films, Adoor's major contribution towards introducing a new cinema culture in Kerala was the constitution of the first Film Society in Kerala, 'Chitralekha'. He also took active part in the constitution of 'Chitralekha', Kerala's first Film Co-operative Society for film production. These movements triggered a fresh wave of good films, often termed 'art films' by directors like Aravindan, P A Becker, K G George, Pavithran, Raveendran etc.
Before Swayamvaram Adoor had made his first short film The Myth of 50 Sec duration for a festival in Montreal. His second short film And Man Created was 'Chitralekha's' first production. He also directed numerous documentaries for different government organisations before he started his first feature Swayamvaram.
All the ten films he directed, from Swayamvaram to Oru Pennum Randaanum, were screened at several International film festivals and won him several National and International awards. He won the British Film Institute award for Elepathayam. He also won National Film Awards four times and several State Film Awards. Adoor received the Padma Shree in 1984 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2006.
The Nation honoured Adoor for his valuable contributions to Indian cinema by awarding him the highest cinema award of India, the Dabasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2004

Adoor
Adoor or Adur is a Major Municipal town and Thaluk Headquarters in Kerala State.Adoor is major Commercial Center in the District. Adoor and Thiruvalla are the Two Revnue Divisions of Pathanamthitta district.National Highway NH183A and Three Major State Highways passing through Adoor Town.
There are two Municipal Towns in Adoor Thaluk 1.Adoor 2.Pandalam
Etymology
Adoor is located in Pathanamthitta district and is one of the prominent town in Central Travancore. Geographically it is situated between Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam. Before the formation of Pathanamthitta district in 1982, Adoor was in Kollam district.
Mannadi, situated in Adoor is where Velu Thampi Dalawa, the renowned freedom fighter of Travancore and diwan (title)|diwan of Travancore Princely State, spent his last days. A historical museum, a statue of Veluthampi Dalawa and an open-air theatre are the major attractions here. The Kerala Institute of Folklore and Folk Arts functions here. The ancient Bhagavathy Temple at Mannadi has some exquisite stone sculptures. The annual temple festival is held in February/March.

Adoor Gopalakrishnan
Moutatthu Gopalakrishnan Unnithan (born 3 July 1941), commonly known as Adoor Gopalakrishnan, is an Indian film director, script writer, and producer. Adoor Gopalakrishnan had a major role in revolutionizing Malayalam cinema and is regarded as one of the finest filmmakers of India. Adoor's first film Swayamvaram (1972) pioneered the new wave cinema movement in Kerala. Most of his films go to festivals around the world, and are released in Kerala. All the eleven films he directed, from Swayamvaram to Oru Pennum Randaanum (2008), were screened at several international film festivals and won him several national and international awards. He won National Film Awards sixteen times, Kerala State Film Awards seventeen times and also won several international film awards. He won the prestigious British Film Institute award for Elippathayam (1981). Adoor received the Padma Shri in 1984 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2006. The Nation honoured Adoor for his valuable contributions to Indian cinema by awarding him the highest cinema award of India, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2004.

Kavya Madhavan
Kavya Madhavan is an Indian film actress who predominantly works in Malayalam cinema. She made her debut in Pookkalam Varavayi (1991) as a child artist. As a heroine Kavya's debut film was Lal Jose's Chandranudikkunna Dikhil (1999) while she was in the ninth standard. It was a super hit. She won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actress twice, for her performances in the films Perumazhakkalam (2004) and Gaddama (2010).
Background
Kavya Madhavan was born in 1984 in the city of Nileshwaram in Kasargod district, Kerala, India, to P. Madhavan and Shyamala. She attended Nileshwaram GLP School and entered the film industry as a child artist. She learned dancing during her school days and participated in competitions. She was a Kalathilakam in a Sub District Schools Youth Festival. She currently resides in Vennala, Ernakulam, Kerala, India. She completed her schooling in National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).
Movie career
She first appeared as a child actor in Kamal's film Pookkalam Varavayi (1991) at the age of seven. Subsequently she was offered parts in other projects such as Pavam IA Ivachan (1994), Parasala Paatchan Payyannur Paramu (1994) by P.Venu and Azhakiya Ravanan (1996), directed by Kamal.

Ace filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnana in conversation with Rajya Sabha TV anchor Syed Mohd Irfan. It was his interest in drama, which lead Adoor Gopalakrishnan to take up the direction course in 1962 at the FTII at Pune, thinking that it would help him to enhance his skills in stage productions. But there he found that stage plays and cinema are entirely different mediums. Notable 'literary' films like Neelakuyil, Chemeen and Oolavum Theeravum produced before Adoor's first film, but all had the regular ingredients of popular cinema, highly dramatic plot and song-dance sequences. Swayamvaram was a rejection of all these populist formulas. This radically different film was reluctantly taken by the mass. Only a minority eagerly waiting for a change in this powerful medium welcomed the film. Apart from his films, Adoor's major contribution towards introducing a new cinema culture in Kerala was the constitution of the first Film Society in Kerala, 'Chitralekha'. He also took active part in the constitution of 'Chitralekha', Kerala's first Film Co-operative Society for film production. These movements triggered a fresh wave of good films, often termed 'art films' by directors like Aravindan, P A Becker, K G George, Pavithran, Raveendran etc. Before Swayamvaram Adoor had made his first short film The Myth of 50 Sec duration for a festival in Montreal. His second short film And Man Created was 'Chitralekha's' first production. He also directed numerous documentaries for different government organisations before he started his first feature Swayamvaram. All the ten films he directed, from Swayamvaram to Oru Pennum Randaanum, were screened at several International film festivals and won him several National and International awards. He won the British Film Institute award for Elepathayam. He also won National Film Awards four times and several State Film Awards. Adoor received the Padma Shree in 1984 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2006. Ace filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnana in conversation with Rajya Sabha TV anchor Syed Mohd Irfan.
It was his interest in drama, which lead Adoor Gopalakrishnan to take up the direction course in 1962 at the FTII at Pune, thinking that it would help him to enhance his skills in stage productions. But there he found that stage plays and cinema are entirely different mediums.
Notable 'literary' films like Neelakuyil, Chemeen and Oolavum Theeravum produced before Adoor's first film, but all had the regular ingredients of popular cinema, highly dramatic plot and song-dance sequences. Swayamvaram was a rejection of all these populist formulas. This radically different film was reluctantly taken by the mass. Only a minority eagerly waiting for a change in this powerful medium welcomed the film.
Apart from his films, Adoor's major contribution towards introducing a new cinema culture in Kerala was the constitution of the first Film Society in Kerala, 'Chitralekha'. He also took active part in the constitution of 'Chitralekha', Kerala's first Film Co-operative Society for film production. These movements triggered a fresh wave of good films, often termed 'art films' by directors like Aravindan, P A Becker, K G George, Pavithran, Raveendran etc.
Before Swayamvaram Adoor had made his first short film The Myth of 50 Sec duration for a festival in Montreal. His second short film And Man Created was 'Chitralekha's' first production. He also directed numerous documentaries for different government organisations before he started his first feature Swayamvaram.
All the ten films he directed, from Swayamvaram to Oru Pennum Randaanum, were screened at several International film festivals and won him several National and International awards. He won the British Film Institute award for Elepathayam. He also won National Film Awards four times and several State Film Awards. Adoor received the Padma Shree in 1984 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2006.
The Nation honoured Adoor for his valuable contributions to Indian cinema by awarding him the highest cinema award of India, the Dabasaheb Phalke Award for the year 2004
