What a difference a week (or a home ground?) makes. That's superb stuff from the Waratahs, who led at half-time almost despite themselves but can hang their heads high after a strong display of attacking rugby in the second term. Six tries and a 20-point win over the competition leaders is hard to fault and that keeps them on top of the Australian conference, at least until a likely bonus-point win for the Brumbies over the Sunwolves tomorrow night. The Japanese outfit are the Tahs' next opponents on Saturday, July 2 (clearly the most important contest going on that day) after we break for the Test series against England.
That's it from us tonight, thanks for your company and stay tuned to smh.com.au/sport for Tom Decent's match report and all the wash-up from tonight, not to mention the rest of Australia's best sporting news and analysis. We'll also be live from 5am tomorrow morning as the Socceroos look to preserve a 13-year winning streak over England. Cheers.
That'll do it. Waratahs 45 Chiefs 25.
80 min: The Waratahs have a scrum feed and one more chance to score a crucial final try.
77 min: One for the big men there. Dave Dennis looks like scoring before Jack Dempsey crosses under the sticks. How good's that. Waratahs 43 Chiefs 25 and the Tahs' clash with the Hurricanes on July 9 looks like a blockbuster....
Matt Carraro is limping all over the shop but the Waratahs are out of replacements.
Back to topThere's the stat that tells the tale - since the half-hour mark the Tahs have made eight line breaks to the Chiefs' two.
75 min: Almost an intercept for the Chiefs. Matt Lucas is a relieved man. Squeaky bum time at Allianz....
He hooks it to the right. Score remains Waratahs 38 Chiefs 25.
73 min: Foley will have a shot from 45m out to put this out of the Chiefs' reach, you'd think....
67 min: Beautiful stuff from the Chiefs there. Toni Pulu on the end of a pinpoint kick to score in the corner, McKenzie converts and all of a sudden we're back inside two converted tries. Waratahs 38 Chiefs 25.
Back to top64 min: Try awarded. Waratahs 38 Chiefs 18. If they can keep the Chiefs scoreless and score another try the Tahs are looking at a crucial bonus point. Foley converts again. He don't miss much, this bloke...
64 min: TRY TIME. Israel Folau looks to have crossed for the Tahs but we're going upstairs. As you do.
Change for the Chiefs - Nathan Harris making way for Hika Elliott.
62 min: Tahs get the short-arm penalty and they'll have a scrum 5m out from the Chiefs' line.
Another change for the Waratahs with the milestone man (100th game) Rob Horne coming off for David Horwitz.
Back to top59 min: End-to-end stuff and Dean Mumm almost scores another for the Tahs. It comes to nothing as the ball goes to ground out wide but this is exciting stuff....
57 min: Ahh, that's more like it. Penalty Chiefs.
56 min: Foley makes no mistake again. Waratahs 31 Chiefs 18. Where youse been all my season?
55 min: HOOPER HAS HIS SECOND! A real captain's knock and that could just about be the ball game. Waratahs 29, Chiefs 18. Kick to come. How good is running rugby. Ping Peter Fitzsimons.....
54 min: Kellaway almost has his second as the Tahs go on the attack again. Phipps with the break this time.
