Dixie is a historical nickname for the Southern United States.
As a definite geographic location within the United States, "Dixie" is usually defined as the eleven Southern states that seceded in late 1860 and early 1861 to form the new confederation named the Confederate States of America. They are (in order of secession): South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, and Tennessee.
However, the location and boundaries of "Dixie" have become, over time, more limited, vernacular and mercurial. Today, it is most often associated with those parts of the Southern United States where traditions and legacies of the Confederate era and the antebellum South live most strongly.
Many businesses in the South contain "Dixie" in their name as an identifier, such as supermarket chain "Winn-Dixie".
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the origins of this nickname remain obscure. According to A Dictionary of Americanisms on Historical Principles (1951), by Mitford M. Mathews, three theories most commonly attempt to explain the term:
Jones may refer to:
Dixie Chicks is an American country music band which has also crossed over into other genres, including pop and alternative country. The band is composed of founding members (and sisters) Martie Erwin Maguire and Emily Erwin Robison, and lead singer Natalie Maines. The band formed in 1989 in Dallas, Texas, and was originally composed of four women performing bluegrass and country music, busking and touring the bluegrass festival circuits and small venues for six years without attracting a major label. After the departure of one bandmate, the replacement of their lead singer, and a slight change in their repertoire, Dixie Chicks soon achieved commercial success, beginning in 1998 with hit songs "There's Your Trouble" and "Wide Open Spaces".
On March 10, 2003, during a London concert, nine days before the March 19, 2003 invasion of Iraq, lead vocalist Maines told the audience: "We don't want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States (George W. Bush) is from Texas". The positive reaction to this statement from the British audience contrasted with the negative reaction including boycotts that ensued in the US, where the band was denounced by talk-show conservatives, while their albums were discarded in public protest.
Louis Marshall Jones (October 20, 1913 – February 19, 1998), known professionally as Grandpa Jones, was an American banjo player and "old time" country and gospel music singer. He is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Born in the farming community of Niagara in Henderson County, Kentucky, Jones spent his teenage years in Akron, Ohio, where he began singing country music tunes on a radio show on WJW. His father was a fiddle player, and his mother was a ballad singer. In 1931, Jones joined the Pine Ridge String Band, which provided the musical accompaniment for the very popular Lum and Abner show. By 1935 his pursuit of a musical career took him to WBZ (AM) radio in Boston, Massachusetts where he met musician/songwriter Bradley Kincaid, who gave him the nickname "Grandpa" because of his off-stage grumpiness at early-morning radio shows. Jones liked the name and decided to create a stage persona based around it. Later in life, he lived in Mountain View, Arkansas.
Dixie Jones is leading Carlito Rofoli in West Coast Swing "Jill and Jack" spotlight dance at Kenny Wetzel's Press Box back in the day lol. Dixie's musical interpretation was unmatched and it's a bummer ya can't see her follow here. (So. California). Dixies Granddaughter is Madison Malone.

An old 1916 recording of Dixie/Dixie's Land/I Wish I Was in Dixie by Billy Murray and Ada Jones. It was composed in 1859 by Daniel Decatur Emmett. Although strongly associated with the south and the Confederacy, it was reportedly a favorite song of Abraham Lincoln, as he had a military band play it before a large crowd soon after the Civil War ended.

In 1682, the Frenchman Robert Cavalier, declared this Mississippi region to be French territory and named it ‘La Louisiana’. Grand Ole Opry, 1961. Written by Jack Yellen and George L. Cobb. LYRICS Hello there, stranger, how do you do? There's something I'd like to say to you. You seem surprised, I recognize; I'm no detective, but I just surmise You're from the place I'm longing to be. Your smiling face seems to say to me: You're from my homeland, my sunny homeland! Tell me, can it be? It was a way back in old '89 When first I crossed that Mason Dixon Line. Gee, but again I long to return To those good old folks I left behind. My home was way down in old Alabam', On the plantation near Birmingham; And there's one thing certain, I'm surely flirtin' With those southbound trains. CHORUS Are you from Dixie? I say, from Dixie, Where the fields of cotton beckon to me? I'm glad to see you. Tell me, how be you, An...
