Obama Turned Out to be Carter, Not…

Reagan, the man he desperately wanted to be:

“I think he’s going to end up as a parenthesis in American history in the sense that he thought when he came into office, he thought he was the Ronald Reagan of the left, meaning Reagan came in, he changed the ideological trajectory of the country, he turned it into a conservative country where that was sort of the underlying consensus. Obama thought he was going to change all of that and begin a liberal ascendency the way that Reagan began a conservative ascendency.

Well, it did not turn out that way. The country rejected his policies. Remember what Obama said when he was campaigning, I’m not on the ballot but my legacy is on the ballot. It was on the ballot and the country has rejected it. The idea that he would be the beginner of a new liberal ascendency is now dead and Obama I think understands that very well.”

The Lamentations of Their Women

Mongol General: What is best in life?
Conan: To crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women.

Jonah Goldberg made those lines immortal in 2002, when he relished the lamentations of the C-SPAN women.

But this year, we don’t have to settle for C-SPAN women. We have White House women!

There has been weeping at West Wing staff meetings and a series of presidential pep talks, a tear-jerker of a Rose Garden gathering and anguished conversations about what will happen to President Obama’s legacy and the job prospects of his aides.

Since Donald J. Trump shocked both political parties and won the presidential election on Tuesday, a White House that had expected to spend the week celebrating a historic victory that would cement Mr. Obama’s most cherished initiatives for years to come is instead experiencing the seven stages of grief.

“It started with sadness and disbelief and definitely some tears around the building,” said one senior official who spoke on the condition of anonymity, unwilling to be quoted by name in detailing the crying or dwelling on the sense of loss hanging over the West Wing.

“Now it’s, ‘Let’s take a moment to digest,’ but also, ‘Let’s quickly pull ourselves up by our bootstraps because we need to continue to do our jobs,’” the official added.

A second senior official said she felt Hillary Clinton’s loss in her gut.

“I was actually physically ill for a while,” she said.

Trump’s Win Will Change Europe

Until now, everyone assumed that Europe’s pro-borders parties, while popular, would never be in power. But Trump’s victory will have voters all over the continent wondering, “Why not us?”

Since Wednesday, French news outlets, along with [Marine] Le Pen’s mainstream political rivals, have been repeating the same thing: It could happen here.

And Ms. Le Pen is not alone. From the Balkans to the Netherlands, politicians on the far right have greeted the election of Mr. Trump with unrestrained delight and as a radical reconfiguring of the political landscape — not just in the United States, but in Europe as well.

[…]

Even more ecstatic was Mr. Wilders, leader of the Dutch far-right Freedom Party. “Congratulations! A historic victory! A revolution! We will return our country to the Dutch,” Mr. Wilders said on Wednesday on Twitter. He expanded on his thoughts in an op-ed for Breitbart, writing, “We are witnessing the same uprising on both sides of the Atlantic.”

[…]

Populist leaders, not necessarily of the far right, who have mounted insurgent challenges to longstanding political orders were similarly buoyed by Mr. Trump’s victory, like Beppe Grillo, the leader of the Five Star Movement in Italy.

“They called us sexists, homophobes, demagogues and populists,” Mr. Grillo wrote in a blog post. “They don’t realize that millions of people already no longer read their newspapers and no longer watch their television.”

Victor Davis Hanson:

The old blue-collar middle class was bewildered by the leftwing social agenda in which gay marriage, women in combat units, and transgendered restrooms went from possible to mandatory party positions in an eye blink. In a party in which “white privilege” was pro forma disparagement, those who were both white and without it grew furious that the elites with such privilege massaged the allegation to provide cover for their own entitlement.

Senators up for re-election in 2018:

  • 13 Democrats, and just 2 Republicans
  • 10 of the 13 Democrats are from states Trump won.
  • Call me crazy, but Chuck Schumer’s going to have a hell of a time sustaining a filibuster against anything for the next two years.
