A short tour around the ruins at Ayutthaya Historical Park in Ayutthaya, The 2nd oldest capitol of Thailand. It is located 1-2 hour by train north of Bangkok. Ayutthaya was founded in 1350 by King U-Thong. It was the capital of Thailand (then called Siam) for 417 years from 1350 until it was sacked by the Burmese army in 1767. During this era, now usually referred as the Ayutthaya period or Ayutthaya kingdom, Ayutthaya was ruled by 33 kings of 5 different dynasties. The Kingdom became a major regional player, and a trade center of the East, a meeting point of European merchants and Asian traders.
The Ayutthaya historical park covers the ruins of the old city of Ayutthaya, Thailand, which was founded by King Ramathibodi I in 1350 and was the capital of the country until its destruction by the Burmese army in 1767.
In 1969 the Fine Arts Department began with renovations of the ruins, which became more serious after it was declared a historical park in 1976. The park was declared a UNESCO World heritage site in 1991. According to "Tourism Asia," thirty-three monarchs including King Rama IV governed from Ayutthaya.

Ayutthaya Historical Park
The Ayutthaya Historical Park (Thai: อุทยานประวัติศาสตร์พระนครศรีอยุธยา (Pronunciation)) covers the ruins of the old city of Ayutthaya, Thailand. The city of Ayutthaya was founded by King Ramathibodi I in 1350 The city was captured by the Burmese in 1569; though not pillaged, it lost "many valuable and artistic objects." It was the capital of the country until its destruction by the Burmese army in 1767.
In 1969 the Fine Arts Department began with renovations of the ruins, which became more serious after it was declared a historical park in 1976. A part of the park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. Thirty-five kings ruled the Ayutthaya kingdom during its existence. King Narai (1656-1688) held court not only in Ayutthaya but also from his palace in the nearby city of Lopburi, from where he ruled 8–9 months in the year.

A park is an area of natural, semi-natural, or planted space set aside for human enjoyment and recreation or for the protection of wildlife or natural habitats. Mortal Kombat
Mortal Kombat is a video game franchise originally developed by Midway Games' Chicago studio in 1992. Following Midway's bankruptcy, the Mortal Kombat development team was acquired by Warner Bros. and turned into NetherRealm Studios. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment currently owns the rights of the franchise and rebooted it in 2011.
The development of the first game was originally based on an idea that Ed Boon and John Tobias had of making a video game starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, but as that idea fell through, a fantasy-themed fighting game titled Mortal Kombat was created instead. The original game has spawned many sequels and has been spun off into several action-adventure games, films (animated and live-action with its own sequel), and television series (animated and live-action). Other spin-offs include comic book series, a card game and a live-action tour. Along with Capcom's Street Fighter and Bandai Namco's Tekken, Mortal Kombat has become one of the most successful fighting franchises in the history of video games.

That means you can do Ayutthaya as a day trip while staying in Bangkok. And as you can see here: http://goo.gl/UiCOMx the train goes quite often and the train ticket are dirt cheap. You can also get there by bus, mini bus, taxi and rental car. But you get there cheapest, most comfortable and you get the best view on the surrounding landscape from the train.

Ayutthaya was founded in 1350 by King U-Thong. It was the capital of Thailand (then called Siam) for 417 years from 1350 until it was sacked by the Burmese army in 1767. During this era, now usually referred as the Ayutthaya period or Ayutthaya kingdom, Ayutthaya was ruled by 33 kings of 5 different dynasties. The Kingdom became a major regional player, and a trade center of the East, a meeting point of European merchants and Asian traders.
The Ayutthaya historical park covers the ruins of the old city of Ayutthaya, Thailand, which was founded by King Ramathibodi I in 1350 and was the capital of the country until its destruction by the Burmese army in 1767.
In 1969 the Fine Arts Department began with renovations of the ruins, which became more serious after it was declared a historical park in 1976. The park was declared a UNESCO World heritage site in 1991. According to "Tourism Asia," thirty-three monarchs including King Rama IV governed from Ayutthaya.

Visiting Ayutthaya, Thailand, is one of the best day trips to take from Bangkok. It's Thailand's ancient capital city, second after Sukhothai. The city has a very long history with many ups and downs. It was overthrown by the Burmese in the mid 1700's and many of the gems and treasures from the temples were moved the Yangon at the Shwedagon Pagoda (another very impressive site if you visit Burma). I have visited Ayutthaya a number of times while living in Thailand, but a few weeks ago I joined a small travel blogger group and we toured a few of the most important temples, and I also snuck away for some food and refreshment! The Ayutthaya historical park is the most significant section of the city, an area where there's a concentration of temples and historical sites to visit. The city in now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The first temple we stopped at was Wat Yai Chai Mongkon (วัดใหญ่่ชัยมงคล), a must visit temple in Ayutthaya. The temple is recognized by its huge chedi that leans a little to the side, sort of like the Leaning Tower of Pisa. At the site, you can then climb a flight of stairs to the middle level section that offers a nice view of the surroundings. Surrounding the temple are many statues of Buddha, most of them wrapped in orange cloth and in many symmetrical patterns. Just like Wat Pho in Bangkok, there's also a reclining Buddha, though this one made of stone and wrapped in yellow cloth instead of gold. I had visited the temple before, but had never stopped to see the palace of King U-Thong and his many roosters. After Wat Yai Chai Mongkon (วัดใหญ่่ชัยมงคล) in Ayutthaya we proceeded to Wat Phanan Choeng (วัดพนัญเชิงวรวิหาร), a temple that's famous for housing a 19 meter high golden seated Buddha. The temple is a cross between traditional Thai and Chinese beliefs so there are lots of cross similarities and the temple is very Chinese Confucian in appearance. There are many section of Wat Phanan Choeng (วัดพนัญเชิงวรวิหาร), and you can spend some time walking around each section of the temple. It's nearly always busy and bustling with people, especially on the weekends. Finally, the famous Wat Mahathat (วัดมหาธาตุ) is one of the most visited and well known temple complexes in the Ayutthaya historical park. It's the temple where the famous head of Buddha wrapped within the banyan tree is - that's always a favorite place for everyone to take pictures! The rest of the temple is not in that great of condition, but it's mostly in ruins. The temple is still nice to walk around for a few minutes.
Ayutthaya is hot, and when you are walking around the temples, you're going to sweat for sure! So be prepared for the sun and always remember to drink plenty of water. I also like to stock up on hydration by having a fresh coconut to drink the water. Finally, whenever you visit any city in Thailand it's important to eat and to bring back some of the local speciality snacks. In Ayutthaya there's nothing more famous than a sweet called roti sai mai (โรตีสายไหม), and if you don't eat this, many Thais will say you didn't even go to Ayutthaya. It's basically a thin crepe pancake that's combined with cotton candy like sugar, wrapped into a little taco and consumed. It is very sweet and full of sugar, but it is the taste of Ayutthaya and should be sampled! Have a great trip visiting the ancient capital city of Thailand!

Imagine a sprawling, sweeping metropolis filled with over a million inhabitants. This was the city of Ayutthaya during the 1600s, when it was the glittering capital of Thailand. The onetime “Venice of the East” was destroyed by the Burmese in 1767. The city was burned to the ground, leaving behind only some monasteries and the remains of other buildings.
Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya was a tremendous center of commerce and a focal point for art, religion, and politics. Head over to Wat Phra Si Sanphet, a temple you may recognize thanks to its three chedis, or towering, bell-shaped buildings. This temple once connected to the royal palace, though the connecting buildings were destroyed; today, you can wander through its crumbling red walls and marvel at what must have once been.
Get ready for your Ayutthaya tour in nearby Bangkok, which is about 50 miles south of the ruins. In Bangkok, you can travel to Ayutthaya by boat, train, or rental car. Once you’re in the vicinity, you can explore the area on foot, or rent a bike. For some true local flavor, hire a tuk-tuk (a motorized, three-wheeled cart) to carry you from place to place.
A number of markets are set up outside the ruins, so you’ll find plenty to eat after a long day of exploring the ruins. Sit back, enjoy some food, and watch as the sun sets on the ancient buildings.
