About Brisbane

Brisbane is the throbbing heart of South East Queensland, the fastest growing metropolitan region in Australia. Population growth has really taken off since 1990, with more than 1000 people moving to South East Queensland each week (SEQ Regional Plan 2009-2031). There's just over a million people living in Brisbane now, while the Greater Brisbane region is home to more than double that figure.

Those residents agree that South East Queensland is a beautiful and exciting place to live. Set on the winding Brisbane River, Brisbane itself is made up of a mix of highly urban areas and rural retreats. The Great Brisbane area also takes in the popular Sunshine Coast beaches to the north, and the Gold Coast to the south, and stretches to the Great Dividing Range in the west. There's much geographical diversity on offer- from mountain ranges and hinterlands to farmlands and parks, and then beaches, bays and islands - residents and visitors never run out of new places to explore.

And the weather is almost always perfect for outdoor exploration. Brisbane's mild, subtropical climate makes it one of the most liveable cities in the world - with average temperatures between 10 and 30 degrees centigrade, it's outdoors, T-shirt weather nearly all year round.

About 612 ABC Brisbane

612 ABC Brisbane is Brisbane's premier talk radio station, broadcasting live on air, online and on digital radio to the greater Brisbane region.

Every day, our team of experienced presenters and producers brings you Brisbane's latest news and information and the best entertainment the region has to offer.

We've been keeping Brisbane informed now for more than 80 years. Since the 1920s, 612 ABC Brisbane has shared its history and development with the growth of Queensland.

In 1925, the Queensland Government, led by E.G Theodore, set up the first A Class station in Brisbane. This first station was called 4QG, and as an A class station was primarily funded out of license revenues collected by the PMG.

The first program at 1pm on the 27 July 1925 was the Market report, followed by the Stock Exchange and the weather. The station then closed until 6.30pm when the Children's Hour was broadcast. In 1928, the federal government announced it would nationalise all A class stations and the Australian Broadcasting Company was formed to supply programs to the national broadcasting service.
