UEFA Champions League

The UEFA Champions League is a yearly tournament that pits the best clubs in Europe against one another to crown the continent’s champion.

Teams qualify for the tournament through their domestic league, with larger countries sending multiple entrants each year while smaller country’s only send one team, the league champion from the previous season.

After three qualifying rounds, the competition embarks on its first stage, the group stage where the final 32 teams are drawn together in eight groups of four where they play the other three teams in their group both home and away.

The winners and runners up from the eight groups then progress through to the next stage, the knockout stage, where the final 16 playoff in sudden death home-and-away ties through to the showpiece final.

The final of the 2016-17 UEFA Champions League will be played 3 June 2017 at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Groups overview

Group A

Big-spending French champions Paris Saint-Germain headline Group A, and will be looking to go further than their quarterfinal appearance last season. Their main competition for the group will be English side Arsenal, who are making their 17th-straight appearance in the competition under manager Arsene Wenger. Joining the two powers are Swiss giants FC Basel and Bulgarian champions Ludogorets Razgrad.

Group B

An extremely even group. Serie A side Napoli will go into this year’s competition with confidence although they have lost star striker Gonzalo Higuain. Portuguese champions Benfica will also pose a threat, although they too have lost key players, with Renato Sanches joining Bayern Munich and Nicolas Gaitan heading to Atletico Madrid. Two other domestic champions, Turkey’s Besiktas and Ukraine’s Dynamo Kiev, round out the group.

Group C

A group punctuated by two of the biggest clubs in world football. Firstly, Spanish champions Barcelona, led by the scintillating attacking trio of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar, who will be looking to reclaim the European crown they last won in 2015. The other leading light of Group C is cashed up Premier League side Manchester City, who are led by Barca’s former manager, Pep Guardiola. The group also contains tricky German club Borussia Monchengladbach and Scottish champions Celtic.

Group D

German giants Bayern Munich feature in Group D and will be looking to win the European Cup for a sixth time under new boss Carlo Ancelotti. Group E

Another extremely even group, featuring three sides that finished third in their domestic leagues last season. Russian champions CSKA Moscow round out the group.

Group F

Footballing royalty and reigning Champions League winners Real Madrid will be chasing back-to-back European Cups this season, something that hasn’t been achieved in the Champions League era.
