John Savident (born 21 January 1938) is a British actor, known for his television roles, including his portrayal of Fred Elliott in the soap opera Coronation Street from 1994 until 2006.
John created the role of Monsieur Firmin in the original production of 'Phantom of the Opera' which opened on 9 October, 1986 at Her Majesty's Theatre, Haymarket, London.
Despite his many film and TV roles, (including civil servant Sir Frederick Stewart in Yes, Minister and in A Clockwork Orange), it was only during the 1990s when he joined the cast of Coronation Street as the bellicose but romantic butcher Fred Elliott that he became a household name. He made his first appearance on the show in 1994 and his character quickly became popular with viewers.
On 1 December 2000, Savident was stabbed in the neck by Michael Smith who claimed he was acting in self-defence. Savident said at the time "I suddenly felt somebody come up behind me and whizz me round so I was face down on the bed and then I felt a prick on my throat". Savident had met Smith in a gay bar. They then went to Savident's home apparently to discuss the theatre which Smith claimed was a euphemism for sex. The next week on Coronation Street the large sticking plaster on his character's neck was explained as a "butchering accident".
In opera or commedia dell'arte, a prima donna [ˈpriːma ˈdɔnna] (plural: prime donne; Italian for "first lady") is the leading female singer in the company, the person to whom the prime roles would be given. The prima donna was normally, but not necessarily, a soprano. The corresponding term for the male lead (almost always a tenor) is primo uomo.
Prime donne often had grand off-stage personalities and were seen as demanding of their colleagues. From its original usage in opera, the term has spread in contemporary usage to refer to anyone behaving in a demanding or temperamental fashion or having an inflated view of oneself.
In nineteenth-century Italy, the leading woman in an opera or Commedia dell'arte company was known as the prima donna, literally the "first lady." This woman, usually the principal soprano of the company, would typically perform leading roles, and generally sang more music than other women in the company.
Famous opera prime donne have often caused opera enthusiasts to divide into opposing "clubs" supporting one singer over another. The rivalry between the fans of Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi, for example, was one of the most famous, despite the friendship of the two singers.
Coronation Street (informally known as Corrie) is a British soap opera created by Granada Television and shown on ITV since 9 December 1960. The programme centres on Coronation Street in Weatherfield, a fictional town based on Salford, its terraced houses, café, corner shop, newsagents, textile factory and The Rovers Return pub. The fictional street was built in the early 1900s and named in honour of the coronation of King Edward VII.
The programme was conceived in 1960 by scriptwriter Tony Warren at Granada Television in Manchester. Warren's initial kitchen sink drama proposal was rejected by the station's founder Sidney Bernstein, but he was persuaded by producer Harry Elton to produce the programme for thirteen pilot episodes. Within six months of the show's first broadcast, it had become the most-watched programme on British television, and is now a significant part of British culture. This show has been one of the most financially lucrative programmes on British commercial television, underpinning the success of Granada Television and ITV.

Fly on the Wall. Mr Fogle has some important new projects for Rita to work on, and he brings his favourite nephew Raymond along to show him how the creative process works. Angelo, meanwhile, is busy perfecting his Cranium Interchange Modulator with Mike. This episode was originally broadcast on Thursday, 18th February, 1993. I've mentioned John Savident a few times elsewhere as he was a recurring character for a bit - and he really needs no introduction anyway - but this is a one-off appearance for Joe Greco in Mike and Angelo, and it marks something of a crossover with Spatz (from the same writers, of course). It's great to see Joe as the baddie, proving his versatility here as the lazy good-for-nothing post-Thatcherite Teflon yuppie sleazeball without a shred of conscience or ethical st...
