Best household items to buy on sale

Allison Tait

Before you rush out to buy a new couch or car, consider when the best time is to buy for that item. If you do, you could save hundreds and even thousands of dollars, writes Allison Tait.

Which household items are best bought on sale? Well the answer would have to be all of them, of course, but the fact is that there are some things you should look at buying right now – and some that might be better to put on hold for a while.

Buy these items now

Electronics

Buy them now. Economic pundits are predicting increased prices for imported electrical goods due to pressure on the Aussie dollar.

Clothes

Again, the falling Australian dollar will affect the price of clothing. Buy kids’ clothes in the end of season sales – just buy one or two sizes up for next summer! Shop online with Biggest Online Shopping Night (#BOSN) on the 26th of October and grab yourself discounts and rewards on kids clothing with stores like Little Miss Marie, Hip Kids, Baby Paws, Daisy and Moose, Merino Kids, Tiny Tribe and Mickey Rose all on board! But just be sure to buy basics – there’s a reason why the fluro green pantsuits end up in the bargain bin.

Toys

Shop at these leading kid’s retailers and cross  off everything on your Christmas list for the little ones. Hip KidsAbaby SuperstoreOrmerod Pics and Pieces, Smiggle and Floaties are all bringing you massive sales this October. There are also great bargains to be had outside of the noted Toy Sales in July and October. The key here is to pick up small items that never go out of fashion – super soakers, LEGO, Nerf guns, Barbie paraphernalia – for the Birthday Party Present Box. As every mum knows, buying all the Christmas toys in July can end in tears when the child moves obsessions from Thomas The Tank Engine to Ben 10 in November and the Santa list changes.

Christmas decorations and wrap

If they’re still languishing in shops, they’ll be super cheap – and you’ll be so happy with your purchases come December 2016.

It’s not just a matter of what you buy, it’s also a question of when to buy it

When it seems as though everything’s on sale all the time (though given the state of the Aussie dollar, this may not be the case for too much longer), it can be difficult to know which sale to choose. Here’s a handy list of big ticket items – and when to buy them.

Cars

Head out towards the end of the month (when salesmen are trying to meet their targets) and look for runout models – each model has its own calendar, and you’ll find a list of when new models are due here.

Furniture

The January/February sales are a great time to pick up a bargain for the house – it’s a typically slow time for furniture retailers (nobody is thinking about new sofas while they’re lying on the beach) and it’s also a time when stores are trying to clear space for new inventory in February. Did you know you can  score yourself good deals on furniture online? Check out Shack Homewares, Cranmore Home, Adairs, and The Home for a beautiful styled home.

Jewellery

Avoid peak periods, such as Christmas, Mothers’ Day and Valentine’s Day.

Airline tickets

Research suggests that the best time to buy airline tickets is on Tuesdays. The key to securing the best fares is to be flexible with your travel dates and to book well in advance. Mid-week flights are often cheaper, and it goes without saying that travelling outside of popular dates leads to reduced fares.
