Our tour starts in the capital, Bogotá, before heading southward across the Andes as far as Popayàn. We then head back north to the coastline of the Caribbean Sea. Our journey takes us through some fabulous landscapes while stopping off to discover cities such as Cali, Medellin and Cartagena. Not forgetting the rural regions and encounters with Amerindians, plus some prestigious archaeological sites like the Ciudad Perdida (lost city).
Our journey is by road, not by plane despite the long distances involved. This way we get a closer look at the daily life of local inhabitants and take in the wide variety of natural landscapes.
Colombia is a vast country sandwiched between South and Central America.
Notorious for its social and economic problems (poverty, drug-trafficking and armed militia forces), Colombia is actually a little-known country in that the majority of received images more often than not filter through news media reporting. What do we know about the country aside form the themes that make headline news in newspapers?
Colombia happens to be a very rich country in terms of both landscapes and culture.

Colombia - Twice the size of France, and with a diversity of landscapes and cultures that would be hard to find even in countries five times its size, Colombia should by all rights be one of the world's top travel destinations.

Walk the walls of Cartagena's achingly beautiful old city, looking over the fortified ramparts upon which the colonial history of South America pivoted.
For nightlife, hot Cali is today's world capital of salsa, claiming that competitive distinction even over Colombia's other vibrant big city party scenes, which keep the music going long into the small hours of the morning.
For dining, you'll find everything from the ubiquitous cheap, delicious Colombian home-style meals to world-class upscale and modern culinary arts in the big cities, with cuisines from all corners of the world represented.
And for relaxing, there are gorgeous tropical beaches along Colombia's Caribbean and Pacific coasts, but you can find even more laidback and peaceful retreats on the idyllic and unspoilt Caribbean island of Providencia.
The political violence has subsided substantially throughout the majority of the country and savvy travelers have already flocked here from around the world—come before everyone else catches on!

There are many groups and agencies offering eco-tourism and it is very usual to find trekking plans (locally named 'caminatas' or 'excursiones') on weekend; many groups (named 'caminantes') offers cheaper one day excursion, special trips (on long weekends or during periods of vacation time (January, Holy Week, July, August, October, December) to different places in the country. Some recommended groups based out of Bogotá are: Viajar y Vivir, Fundación Sal Si Puedes, Caminantes del Retorno; there are many other. Patianchos in Medellín; Rastros in Bucaramanga. They usually offer guidance and transportation to the place; on long trips include lodging and other services. The recommendation is asking if the guide has the official certification.

Voters in Colombia have rejected a landmark peace deal with Farc rebels in a shock referendum result, with 50.2% voting against it.
The deal was signed last week by President Juan Manuel Santos and Farc leader Timoleon Jimenez after nearly four years of negotiations. But it needed to be ratified by Colombians in order to come into force.

Colombia (/kəˈlʌmbiə/ kə-LUM-biə or /kəˈlɒmbiə/ kə-LOM-biə; Spanish: [koˈlombja]), officially the Republic of Colombia (Spanish: 
República de Colombia ), is a country situated in the northwest of South America, bordered to the northwest by Panama; to the east by Venezuela and Brazil; to the south by Ecuador and Peru; and it shares maritime limits with Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Jamaica, Dominican Republic and Haiti. It is a unitary, constitutional republic comprising thirty-two departments.
The territory of what is now Colombia was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples including the Muisca, Quimbaya, and Tairona. The Spanish arrived in 1499 and initiated a period of conquest and colonization ultimately creating the Viceroyalty of New Granada, with its capital at Bogotá. Independence from Spain was won in 1819, but by 1830 "Gran Colombia" had collapsed with the secession of Venezuela and Ecuador. What is now Colombia and Panama emerged as the Republic of New Granada. The new nation experimented with federalism as the Granadine Confederation (1858), and then the United States of Colombia (1863), before the Republic of Colombia was finally declared in 1886.Panama seceded in 1903.

There are many groups and agencies offering eco-tourism and it is very usual to find trekking plans (locally named 'caminatas' or 'excursiones') on weekend; many groups (named 'caminantes') offers cheaper one day excursion, special trips (on long weekends or during periods of vacation time (January, Holy Week, July, August, October, December) to different places in the country. Some recommended groups based out of Bogotá are: Viajar y Vivir, Fundación Sal Si Puedes, Caminantes del Retorno; there are many other. Patianchos in Medellín; Rastros in Bucaramanga. They usually offer guidance and transportation to the place; on long trips include lodging and other services. The recommendation is asking if the guide has the official certification. -

Our tour starts in the capital, Bogotá, before heading southward across the Andes as far as Popayàn. We then head back north to the coastline of the Caribbean Sea. Our journey takes us through some fabulous landscapes while stopping off to discover cities such as Cali, Medellin and Cartagena. Not forgetting the rural regions and encounters with Amerindians, plus some prestigious archaeological sites like the Ciudad Perdida (lost city).
Our journey is by road, not by plane despite the long distances involved. This way we get a closer look at the daily life of local inhabitants and take in the wide variety of natural landscapes.

For history, wander the narrow streets of South America's original capital in Bogotá, check out old Spanish colonial provincial retreats like Villa de Leyva, trek through the thick jungle-covered mountains of the northeast to the Lost City of the Tayrona Indians. Walk the walls of Cartagena's achingly beautiful old city, looking over the fortified ramparts upon which the colonial history of South America pivoted.
For nightlife, hot Cali is today's world capital of salsa, claiming that competitive distinction even over Colombia's other vibrant big city party scenes, which keep the music going long into the small hours of the morning.
For dining, you'll find everything from the ubiquitous cheap, delicious Colombian home-style meals to world-class upscale and modern culinary arts in the big cities, with cuisines from all corners of the world represented.
And for relaxing, there are gorgeous tropical beaches along Colombia's Caribbean and Pacific coasts, but you can find even more laidback and peaceful retreats on the idyllic and unspoilt Caribbean island of Providencia.
The political violence has subsided substantially throughout the majority of the country and savvy travelers have already flocked here from around the world—come before everyone else catches on!

There are many groups and agencies offering eco-tourism and it is very usual to find trekking plans (locally named 'caminatas' or 'excursiones') on weekend; many groups (named 'caminantes') offers cheaper one day excursion, special trips (on long weekends or during periods of vacation time (January, Holy Week, July, August, October, December) to different places in the country. Some recommended groups based out of Bogotá are: Viajar y Vivir, Fundación Sal Si Puedes, Caminantes del Retorno; there are many other. Patianchos in Medellín; Rastros in Bucaramanga. They usually offer guidance and transportation to the place; on long trips include lodging and other services. The recommendation is asking if the guide has the official certification.

Cartagena de Indias was founded in 1535 by Pedro de Heredia as Cartagena del Poniente. When Cartagena declared its independence from Spain on November 11th 1811 it retained the name given to the town after the area of Cartagena de Levante, whose bay is similar to the Colombian coast of Cartagena.
The area was originally inhabited by the indigenous people of the Karib tribe (that’s why we call them Caribbean) during the pre-colonial era, but after the arrival of Christopher Columbus and the subsequent foundation of a town Cartagena de Indias became one of the most important ports in all America.
The privileged location on the Colombian Atlantic coast gave the Spanish people an enormous commercial power over the northern and southern continental area without a great effort. At that time it was also the perfect destination to visit exotic places and thus Cartagena de Indias became the settlement of high-ranking military and ecclesiastic authorities, along with representatives of the Spanish Crown who made Cartagena the capitol of the Nuevo Reino de Granada.
Due to its wealth Cartagena was also the scene of countless conflicts. Not only Spain but also England and France wanted to get control of the city for economic interests. This led to construction of a strong fortress and the acquisition of weaponry to defend this coveted region. At the beginning it started as coastal defense but soon thereafter a big wall surrounded the whole city with a garrison inside. Today, this part of the town is known as the historic center, the Walled City and Ciudad Amurallada.
Despite its strong fortification Cartagena de Indias was assaulted many times by pirates and troops from England, Holland as well as France; however without success. Eventually, a rebellion broke out which led to the inevitable independence in 1811. When Pablo Morullo tried to get Cartagena back for the Spanish Crown four years later by means of a naval and terrestrial siege, he failed terribly thanks to the heroic resistance propelled by the will for independence.
After the constitution as a republic Cartagena experienced a period of economic weakening as its independence caused the cease of trade relations. However, along with the arrival of the new century of 1900 and major advances in terms of industrialization, overall economy, politics and culture Cartagena gradually regained the prosperity and importance as a strategic point of trade.
By today Cartagena de Indias has become a destination for everyone declared a tourist and cultural district in 1991.

The city is situated in a beautiful valley, offering mountain views from every angle. Combine the natural setting with Spring-like temperatures year round, Medellin offers a very comfortable climate both day and night.
Nightlife in Medellin is a big draw among younger travelers, as paisas love to dance, drink, and party. The women are reputed to be the most beautiful in Colombia, if not all of South America, and that reputation alone continues to attract more and more male travelers.
Most foreigners know little about Medellin other than it was the former home and stomping grounds of Pablo Escobar, and therefore once listed as the most dangerous city in the world. In the last few years, several companies have set up organized tours to cater to the tourist-demand for information on this tragic chapter in the city's history.
Best Things to See and Do
Medellin is home to Colombia's most famous artist, Fernando Botero. In the city center, you can walk through Botero Plaza and get your picture taken amongst a few dozen of his large metal sculptures.
The plaza also features the Museo de Antioquia which features some of Botero's paintings, as well as other Latin artists.
One of the reasons Medellin is a popular place for expats to live in Colombia is the metro system. Medellin features Colombia's only metro train. From the main train line that runs North/South through the city, are several cable cars (like ski gondolas) that run up the mountains to poorer neighborhoods.
These cable cars are meant to give residents easier access to the city, however they also offer a cheap and fun way to get panoramic views of the entire city.
If you prefer adrenaline-pumping activities, paragliding is available for as little as $45 per 25-minute flight.
Where to Eat in Medellin
For a taste of the local cuisine, head to Mondongo's where you can try the mondongo (tripe) soup. Mexican food is often done well, and I'm a fan of 1910 Revolucion Mexicana for the stylish decor as much as the food. And if you're craving excellent creole or north Brazilian food, head to Bonuar, which is adjacent the Modern Art Museum, and features live Blues during the week.
Where to Drink and Dance
While the bars and discotecas around Parque Lleras are always busy on the weekends, there are many more places to party with locals than the Zona Rosa. A paisa favorite is the raucous Dulce Jesus Mio, which is decorated like a mock Antioquian pueblo. Workers dress up as caricatures of typical townspeople. Get there early (9 pm), and ensure you have at least one girl with you, to get a table.
For some of the city's best live salsa music, head downtown to El Eslabon Prendido on a Tuesday night (around 9:30 pm if you want a table). If you actually want room to dance, then go to the upscale Cien Fuegos, which features the biggest dance floor in town.
Best Area for a Night on the Town
Parque Lleras is the most accessible — you can just walk around until you find a bar or discoteca that looks like fun. Or, hop a cab to nearby Barrio Colombia and you'll have a dozen different discotecas to choose from, all within a few square blocks. And you'll see fewer foreigners than in Parque Lleras.
More adventurous visitors will go a bit further to La 33, or La 70, a five-block strip of salsa bars and clubs on the West side of the city.
Getting Around Medellin
Medellin is a large city, so while you'll be able to walk around within neighborhoods, you'll need public transport to get you around the city. Bus rides, which can be confusing at first, cost about 65 cents each, while a single ride on the metro will run you 85 cents.
The metro is very easy to use, clean, and generally safe (there's security at every station and platform). Taxis are metered, and you can go from one end of the city to the other for $6-7.
Events and Festivals
In early July, Medellin hosts Colombia's annual salsa festival. The weekend event is a combination of salsa workshops, competitions, and at night, social dancing.
As the fashion capital of Colombia, Medellin hosts Colombiamoda (fashion week) every July as well. The 3-day event is open to the public during the day (a pass costs about $40), while the runway shows are invite-only.
La Feria de las Flores, the city's annual flower parade, runs from the last week of July through the first week of August. The weekends are busy with parades, including La Cabalgata horse parade, an antique car parade, and the flower parade. There are also lots of concerts and special events held during the 10-day celebrations.

Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) Secretariat member and its Caribbean Bloc commander Ivan Marquez gave an interview to RT in Havana, on Saturday, in which he talked about the peace deal between the Colombian government and FARC.
Commenting on why Colombians rejected the agreement reached between the Colombian government and rebels, Marquez underlined that the majority of the people did not participate in the referendum on October 2, and that it’s also necessary to listen to those who did not vote.
Marquez also expressed negative views of former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe Velez, saying that he organised a campaign which “deceived” many Colombians to vote against the peace deal. Marquez went to on call Velez “the instigator of the strife in Colombia,” adding that “he wants to destroy” the agreement.
Colombian voters rejected the proposed peace deal by 50.24 percent in a referendum on October 2. Despite this, Colombian President Juan Santos was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday for his efforts in reaching a peace agreement with the FARC rebels.

And we will listen, not only to people who voted against the peace agreement. The fact is that in Colombia 'no' was said not only by supporters of Uribe, but also quite sensible people. Many who voted against, were just deceived by the campaign, organized by the ex-President of Colombia Alvaro Uribe Velez. But we also need to listen to people who voted for peace, and we will do it. Let's listen to people who have been victims of the conflict. We believe that it is necessary to listen to those 62% of people who did not participate in the referendum on October 2. And these are more than 20 million Colombians."

We are confident that if he is the one to monitor the peace process, Colombia will become a real hell. We know that for sure, because he is well-known in Colombia. We told the authorities that Uribe not only wants to disrupt the agreements reached in Havana, he still wants the President's head. It is a pity that there are still such people, who are calling for hatred and violence."

A camp of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) has given an insight into the daily life of its female guerrillas.
Fifty guerrilla group members from the FARC Western Bloc in western Colombia's Cauca Department granted China Central Television exclusive access to their camp in July, providing a first-hand view of the daily routines of the camp's members.
The female guerrillas at the camp said they are just as important as their male counterparts.
"In FARC's daily operation, male and female guerrillas bear the same responsibilities," said Amanda, a camp commander.
"In FARC, everybody is equal and female guerrillas are cared about and respected," said Jimena, a female member.
FARC is organized into seven blocs and has more than 8,000 members, 40 percent of whom are female.
The women said there are many prejudices against them within Colombian society.
"There is always negative publicity saying that the female guerrillas are being bullied and raped in FARC. These are among the many things that were made up," said Amanda.
The female members said they love make-up and always carry some with them when patrolling in the forests.
Jimena introduced the contents of her knapsack.
"These are hair conditioner, shampoo and antiperspirant. These threads are for weaving foot ornaments. And here is my perfume and cleansing oil. And these are my nail polishes. There are 12 colors," she said.
Some former guerrillas have said that FARC forbids pregnancy, and Jimena showed that she carries contraceptives in her knapsack.
"These are for contraception. We normally take contraceptive measures," Jimena said.
Of course, the most important thing is to bring their weapons.
"I use this rifle, a 556 assault rifle," Jimena said.
"Each guerrilla's combat vest is equipped with 200 bullets. And someone also needs to take three to four small grenades with them," she said.
Three nurses are responsible for daily medical services for the camp's 50 members, with limited medicines amid strict government controls.
The visit to the camp was made just before Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and FARC leader Timoleon Jimenez signed a peace deal on Aug. 24 after nearly four years of negotiations to end the half-century-long conflict between the two sides.
But the future of the peace process was plunged into doubt on Sunday as a national vote on whether to accept the agreement with FARC went down to the wire, with the "No" camp securing a razor-thin victory.

Reaching a deal with the Marxist-Leninist FARC was a pledge Santos had committed to before his 2010 election victory. On September 27, after 52-years of bloody conflict, a 297-page agreement was signed by Santos and FARC leader Timoleon Jimenez (also known as Timochenko) following almost four years of negotiations.
Although Colombian voters rejected a peace deal between the government and FARC by 50.24 percent, the referendum had a low turnout, at less than 40 percent. FARC leaders have stated their willingness to stick to the ceasefire, despite the no outcome of the referendum.

Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos stated that the Colombian government's ceasefire agreement with the left-wing FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) organisation is due to expire on 31 October, 2016, following a 'NO' result from a referendum on whether to make peace with the left-wing militant group, during a press statement from Bogota, Tuesday.
"In that sense, a bilateral and definite ceasefire has been set up with the FARC until 31 October. I hope we can advance in the accords, in the talks, so that we can finalise the arrangements and agreements that will allow us to end this conflict," stated Santos, adding that he hoped for an advancement in the accords that would presumably keep the ceasefire in place.
Reaching a deal with the Marxist-Leninist FARC was a pledge Santos had committed to before his 2010 election victory. On September 27, after 52-years of bloody conflict, a 297-page agreement was signed by Santos and FARC leader Timoleon Jimenez (also known as Timochenko) following almost four years of negotiations.
Although Colombian voters rejected a peace deal between the government and FARC by 50.24 percent, the referendum had a low turnout, at less than 40 percent. FARC leaders have stated their willingness to stick to the ceasefire, despite the no outcome of the referendum.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People's Army a.k.a. FARC-EP has been fighting the government since 1964. Their home is in the Colombian rainforest, in areas often only accessible by the Amazon River. To avoid being ambushed by the army, they constantly move their camps, only occasionally stopping at local villages to pick up provisions. Many of the FARC's recruits come from these very same settlements. Young people there are often brought up in conditions of extreme poverty, where education is an unaffordable luxury. They also find themselves at risk of being caught in the crossfire between the rebels and the army. Faced with this situation, some young people choose to take matters into their own hands, and join the fight. The FARC is known to recruit teenagers as young as 15. Interestingly, around 40% of the guerrillas are women. Their commitment is such that they are willing to leave their families behind to embrace a new life in the rainforest hideouts. It's far from a glamourous environment, however, even in full camouflage with guns slung over their shoulders, the young women still find time to maintain their nails.
Women in the FARC who get pregnant are forced by necessity to give their babies to their civilian relatives: rainforest camps are no place to raise children. They often prefer to continue their revolutionary struggle over motherhood. Many guerillas have been unable to disclose their involvement in the fight against the government to their relatives. Now, however, the military conflict that has been tearing the country apart for over half a century may finally come to an end. The FARC has been in peace talks with Colombia’s government since 2012, and they are now on the verge of signing a long-awaited truce.
It will mean that female rebels who have been with the FARC for 15-20 years will finally be able to come home and see their children. We spoke to the female fighters about what brought them to the jungle, and what expectations they have of the peace treaty.

Colombia is a country that has been at war for more than 50 years, due to a social model that benefits the oligarchic minority and at the expense of the poor majorities, who suffer exclusion and violence. This excluding society is being led by a narco-state, financed and supported by the North American government.
The mass graves, the false positives (assassinations of innocent people by the repressive forces of the state, falsely accusing them of being guerrilla fighters), tortures and violations to peasants, because of being "supporters" of the guerrilla movement (Colombia is ranked second in the world for displaced population, as a result of state and paramilitary violence); threats, persecution and repression to political dissidence; it's every day's bread for our sister nation Colombia. Colombians live in a country with a terrorist government where human rights don't exist.
In the middle of this capitalist and patriarch reality, women face all kinds of oppression: economic, sexual, intellectual, among others. In Colombia, there is almost no women's participation on different government levels, and it's almost impossible for women from the Left to do legal politics. That's why every day more women join the oldest guerrilla of Latin America. They decide to fight for their freedom with the ideal of constructing a society of peace with social justice, that is, a socialist society.
This reality is hidden or manipulated by the media, who are at the service of the big capital which has its tentacles spread out over Colombia. These media companies have demonized and stigmatized the female guerrilla fighters of the FARC-EP as sexual slaves of their comandantes.
To help breaking down the media blockade and manipulation is the mission of this documentary, in order to show the real life of the revolutionary women of the FARC-EP.
