After two successful years celebrating all things Sydney, the community event that celebrates what people love about their local area is going national in 2016.

On Wednesday 16 November, people living in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth will be encouraged to celebrate what they love most about their city by taking a picture, using the appropriate hashtag (eg #SnapSydney, #SnapMelbourne, #SnapBrisbane, #SnapAdelaide and #SnapPerth) and then sharing the picture via Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.

All pictures taken on the day can be viewed by selecting your city at www.snapausstralia.com.au. The best images posted in each local area will be published across News Corp Australia’s local newspapers week commencing 21 November.

Also on that day, events will be hosted in Sydney, Brisbane & Melbourne from 11.30am-3pm (local time) featuring giant digital screens live streaming images, as well as entertainment including local DJs and delicious food trucks. Entry and food is free to those who have posted a #Snap.

The initiative is being promoted by News Corp Australia’s community titles NewsLocal, Messenger, Leader, Quest and Community News Group with Canon and Harvey Norman coming on board as national partners in 2016. Some of the country’s biggest names have already jumped on board including Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, NSW Premier Mike Baird and celebrity chef Curtis Stone.

News Corp Australia’s managing director community publishing Brett Clegg said: “This is a campaign that allows people to celebrate and share what they love most about their local area and in 2016, we’re proud to be extending it to Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide.

“SnapAustralia is a brilliant illustration of how our titles are innovating for a modern audience, delivering our unrivalled proposition of local community connection to consumers and advertisers across multiple platforms and experiential activations.”

In the four weeks leading up to SnapAustralia, Canon has been hosting free photographic workshops across the country educating people on the art of taking a great picture.

Canon Australia’s director of consumer imaging Jason McLean said: “SnapAustralia is a natural collaboration for us to extend the reach and impact our Canon Collective photography experience team have in the local communities that they serve.

“This is about real people connecting with their communities across platforms and in multiple formats, including live experiences.”

In 2015, #SnapSydney was successful in generating 11,500 images using the hashtag #SnapSydney. The webpage SnapSydney.com.au generated over 160,000 impressions with people spending 18 minutes on average perusing the site. A social media campaign connected with approximately 1.9 million people across Facebook and Instagram.
