Cricket Confidential: Callum Ferguson’s brother tells story behind viral video

IMAGINE flying halfway around the world to witness your brother living out his childhood dream, only to become a viral sensation yourself.

That’s exactly what happened to Lachlan Ferguson, the brother of Test debutant Callum, who unwittingly became the talk of the cricketing world after responding rather passionately to a moment of disaster on his brother’s special day.

Lachlan, who lives in London, was caught on camera storming out of Blundstone Arena after Callum was spectacularly run out by South African substitute fielder Dane Vilas, part of a horrific Australian batting collapse that saw Steve Smith’s men rolled for just 85 on Saturday.

Sitting stony-faced through the episode was their father, who had flown down to Hobart from South Australia to witness an occasion none of the Ferguson clan - or anyone else watching the second Test - is likely to forget.

Speaking to Fox Sports News 500 later on Saturday, Lachlan attempted to shift the blame away from his brother for the almighty blow-up.

“I was just saying with one of my mates earlier that it just coincided perfectly with me spilling my beer,” Ferguson said, tongue very much planted in cheek. “So actually I’d spilt my beer, obviously very upset about that, missed the run out and got stitched up.”

He then admitted that wasn’t a very believable story.

In classy style he gave credit to the brilliant piece of fielding by Vilas, who was only on the field after replacing Vernon Philander, who was receiving treatment after a heavy collision with Steve Smith.

“I wasn’t sure that Jonty Rhodes hadn’t come back out of retirement to run my brother out in his debut Test match for Australia,” Ferguson said. “A bit unlucky from that point of view.”

Arguably more remarkable than Lachlan’s viral moment was the effort he put in just to get there. He had to fly all the way from London at extremely short notice, and only just made it to the ground to see his brother walk out to bat.

“…first thing in the morning (after being told his brother would make his Test debut) a very senior person at my firm walked in and I gave him the information, (told him) Callum’s been selected, asked if I could leave maybe on the Friday evening after work and catch days three, four and five of the Test,” Lachlan said.

“He pretty much laughed at me and told me that I had to leave straight away. He kicked me out of the office and all but bought my ticket for me, and I was on the next plane to Hobart.

“… I got into the stadium, saw one ball and it was Adam (Voges) getting a little nick to the keeper. So just in time for Callum to walk out.

“Obviously someone told me it was a hat-trick ball and we’re four for not many at all. Which again wasn’t ideal.

“It was a very eventful 12 deliveries that he faced and I enjoyed it thoroughly, up until the bitter end.”

UMPIRE LOSES HIS COOL

We’ve heard players get caught swearing on live television, but umpires?

Poor old Nigel Llong must have forgot the third umpire is now mic’d up during the DRS process, because he was caught on air saying “get off this s--t” while waiting for replays of an lbw shout to appear on screen.

“This s--t” happened to be Vernon Philander writhing on the ground in pain after an accidental shoulder barge from Steve Smith.

GOOD BOY

Lachlan Ferguson wasn’t the only passionate family member watching the action in Hobart.

Gun Southern Stars wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy couldn’t help getting fired up after watching husband Mitchell Starc tear through the Proteas’ top order after tea on day one.

BEST AUSSIE EFFORT

Australia’s batsman might not have put up much of a fight, but someone at Blundstone Arena sure did.

That was this bloke, who put up a valiant effort against the Hobart weather with this shirtless effort in temperatures that were nudging the low teens.

It’s very harsh on Steve Smith, who made 48 not out while his teammates dropped like flies.
