South-east Queensland is in for another round of severe thunderstorms after being battered on Saturday afternoon.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) issued a severe thunderstorm warning for damaging winds and large hailstones about 3pm, as a storm cell moved over Strathpine.

Meteorologist Michael Paech said Sunday would see the last of the severe thunderstorms for south-east Queensland, with next week looking clearer and top temperatures just under 30 degrees.

Brisbane reached a top temperature of 36 degrees at 1.30pm on Sunday.

Other areas of the State fell just shy of the 40-degree mark, with Rockhampton and Emerald reaching 39.5.

On Saturday, two severe storm cells caused chaos across south-east Queensland, leaving thousands of homes without power.

The Brisbane CBD received 20 millimetres of rain, but the Mitchelton and Everton Hills area registered 50 - 65 millimetres.

There were also strong winds recorded west of Brisbane and in the bay, with gusts reaching 80-90 kilometres per hour.

Just before 5pm, more than 13,000 homes were without power, roofs were strewn across backyards and Doomben races had been abandoned as storms tore through Brisbane before moving off the coast.

Brisbane Airport also lost its runway lights for about 45 minutes, but no flights were impacted.

There was also flash flooding at Brookside Shopping Centre and reports motorists pulled over through Enoggera and Mitchelton because the rain was so heavy.

By midday on Sunday, Energex reported just over 1000 homes in the Brisbane City district were without power.
