The Australian Financial Review Magazine has won the Newspaper Inserted Magazine Brand of the Year award at the Australian Magazine Awards 2016.

It is the fourth consecutive year the magazine has won the award. At a breakfast ceremony in Sydney on Friday, judges described AFR Magazine as "one of few publications which can shout from the rooftops about its quality journalism and photography".

Examples this year were exclusives with Lucy Turnbull, outgoing ABC chief Mark Scott, surfer-turned-fashion designer Kelly Slater and Australia's richest man, Harry Triguboff.

In what was the publication's 21st birthday year, it experienced advertising revenue growth of 19 per cent year on year. It launched new themed issues and an interactive digital edition of its biannual watch insert.

"From quality journalism to custom shopping experiences, Fairfax's AFR Magazine continues to stay strong in a tough landscape," judges said.

AFR Magazine editor Katrina Strickland said the award was testament to the hard work of a small but dedicated team. "A sincere thankyou also to our loyal readers, who are foremost in our minds with everything we do, and to the advertisers who put their faith in our combination of style and substance and make our continued success possible."

AFR Magazine creative director Tim Beor, who is also creative director of Fairfax Media's Good Weekend magazine which is inserted weekly into The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, won designer of the year. "Tim is a genius designer and talented artist," judges said "Good Weekend is a masterpiece...the reader is drawn in."

Good Weekend was also a finalist in the newspaper inserted magazine brand category, and Fairfax Media's brand and audience prestige team were finalists in the sales team of the year.

Other award winners included Gourmet Traveller for food magazine of the year and Paul Merrill as editor of the year for Take 5 magazine. Magazine brand of the year was Delicious. Hall of Fame inductee was Nicole Sheffield, chief executive of NewsLife Media and managing director of News DNA.
