In ethics, value denotes something's degree of importance, with the aim of determining what action of life is best to do or live (deontology), or to describe the significance of different actions (axiology). It may be described as treating actions themselves as abstract objects, putting value to them. It deals with right conduct and good life, in the sense that a highly, or at least relatively highly, valuable action may be regarded as ethically "good" (adjective sense), and an action of low, or at least relatively low, value may be regarded as "bad".
What makes an action valuable may in turn depend on the ethic values of the objects it increases, decreases or alters. An object with "ethic value" may be termed an "ethic or philosophic good" (noun sense).
Values can be defined as broad preferences concerning appropriate courses of action or outcomes. As such, values reflect a person's sense of right and wrong or what "ought" to be. "Equal rights for all", "Excellence deserves admiration", and "People should be treated with respect and dignity" are representative of values. Values tend to influence attitudes and behavior. Types of values include ethical/moral values, doctrinal/ideological (religious, political) values, social values, and aesthetic values. It is debated whether some values that are not clearly physiologically determined, such as altruism, are intrinsic, and whether some, such as acquisitiveness, should be classified as vices or virtues.
Steven Paul "Steve" Jobs (/ˈdʒɒbz/; February 24, 1955 – October 5, 2011) was an American information technology entrepreneur and inventor. He was the co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer (CEO) of Apple Inc.; CEO and largest shareholder of Pixar Animation Studios; a member of The Walt Disney Company's board of directors following its acquisition of Pixar; and founder, chairman, and CEO of NeXT Inc. Jobs is widely recognized as a pioneer of the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s, along with Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Shortly after his death, Jobs's official biographer, Walter Isaacson, described him as the "creative entrepreneur whose passion for perfection and ferocious drive revolutionized six industries: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing."
Adopted at birth in San Francisco, and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1960s, Jobs's countercultural lifestyle was a product of his time. As a senior at Homestead High School in Cupertino, California, his two closest friends were the older engineering student (and Homestead High alumnus) Wozniak and his countercultural girlfriend, the artistically inclined Homestead High junior Chrisann Brennan. Jobs briefly attended Reed College in 1972 before dropping out, deciding to travel through India in 1974 and study Buddhism.

What is the most important thing in life? Money? Happiness? Love? Those things are certainly important, but what matters most is good values. What are values? They are what we consider more important than our feelings. So then, what stops people from eating all the food they feel like eating? The answer is good values. Indeed a lack of good values is the root of virtually everything wrong with the world. In five minutes, learn why we should act based on values rather than our feelings. Learn more about identifing your values at https://www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newTED_85.htm Your values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work. They should determine your priorities, and, deep down, they're probably the measures you use to tell if your life is turning out the way you want it to. When the things that you do and the way you behave match your values, life is usually good -- you're satisfied and content. But when these don't align with your values, that's when things feel... wrong. This can be a real source of unhappiness. This is why making a conscious effort to identify your values is so important. Find out how, in this short video.
KARA SWISHER: What do you imagine the next ten of your life will be about? STEVE JOBS: Um. You know. This is probably a bad example, but I'm going to use it. When this whole thing with Gizmodo happened. I got a lot of advice from people that said, you gotta just let it slide. You can't, uh, you shouldn't go after a journalist because they bought stolen property, and they tried to extort you. You should let it slide. Apple's a big company now, you don't want the PR. You should let it slide. And I thought deeply about this, and I ended up concluding that the worst thing that could possibly happen as we get big, and we get a little more influence in the world is if we change our core values and start letting it slide. I can't do that. I'd rather quit. You know, you go back five years ag...

But what would happen if you consciously chose your values and deliberately prioritized them in a new sequence? “I began to think about what would happen if, instead of just teaching people what their values were and clarifying them, I actually got people to consciously select or redirect the order and content of their values hierarchy system. What if I took someone whose number-one value was security, and whose number-fifteen value was adventure, and I switched the order, not only intellectually but so that adventure became the new highest priority in their nervous system? What kind of change do you think tha...

In this keynote speech from JaxConf 2012, Rich Hickey, creator of Clojure and founder of Datomic gives an awesome analysis of the changing way we think about values (not the philosphoical kind) in light of the increasing complexity of information technology and the advent of Big Data. The broad subject of the talk makes it worth watching for almost anyone in the programming world, and was one of the highlights of the JaxConf lineup. I wish I could say everything you used to be blows up in smoke,
for everybody else to see it's a joke,
doesnt't't it make you feel like you have to choke,
on the words you spoke,
when the promise you broke.
You were looking mighty small to me,
cought up in your world of misery.
Cause when you found a light to lead you the way,
you were looking for a fire to lead you astray.
*Out of your mind, you were looking for change
you were going blind.
Say what you want, be what you want, be who you wanna be!
You held your values so high, how could you sink so low?
You tried to reach for the sky, now youve got nowhere to go.
You think it's worth the pain, you say you're free to choose.
Hey, youve got nothing to gain but everything to lose!
I don't understand why you had to sacrifice your ideals,
everithing you stood for, I know how it feels.
Bouncing back and forth day by day,
never reaching home never wanted to stay.
You held your values high, too hgh to reach,
you almost touched the sky, now you're back on your feet.
Follow the light again, leading the way,
and spit out the fire that lead you astray.
*Wiederholung
You held your values high, too high for you to keep
You almost touched the sky, now you're back on your feet
You had your plans and hopes, you had your dreams to share
