Apprenticeship is a system of training a new generation of practitioners of a trade or profession with on-the-job training and often some accompanying study (classroom work and reading). Apprenticeship also enables practitioners to gain a license to practice in a regulated profession. Most of their training is done while working for an employer who helps the apprentices learn their trade or profession, in exchange for their continued labor for an agreed period after they have achieved measurable competencies. Apprenticeships typically last 3 to 6 years. People who successfully complete an apprenticeship reach the journeyman level of competence.
Although the formal boundaries and terminology of the apprentice/journeyman/master system often do not extend outside of guilds and trade unions, the concept of on-the-job training leading to competence over a period of years is found in any field of skilled labor.
In early modern usage, the clipped form prentice was common.
A recent survey carried out by NCFE has outlined that the high cost of further education has prevented almost half of UK adults gaining advanced qualifications. This videographic explores the value of apprenticeships vs university.

What is an Apprenticeship? An Apprenticeship is a work-based training programme designed around the needs of employers, which leads to nationally recognised qualifications for the apprentice. This training is flexible and is predominantly ‘on-the-job’ so it takes place on your premises. Learning providers (such as an FE College or a training provider) can help, or you can deliver everything yourself. An Apprenticeship will ensure that your apprentice is properly trained to perform the job you need them to do and you can potentially receive government funding. Who can be an apprentice? Anyone, from a school-leaver looking to enter the workplace to an existing employee who wants to progress in their chosen career. In so doing, she provides both a detailed account of her apprenticeship in the art of sustained fieldwork and an insightful overview of thirty years of changes in the empirical and theoretical facets of ethnographic practice. Examining the issues she confronted in her own work, Lave shows how the critical questions raised by ethnographic research erode conventional assumptions, altering the direction of the work that follows.as ethnography takes on increasing significance to an...

It's the post WWII era.
